Was this a bug, or just done to make me feel bad?

Eh, there's still enough room for headcannon saying the the dragons have been attacking nearby towns or something.

But you dont see them attacking. The only thing you see is suffering of a dying animal, and its babies coming to help momma.
I had no qualms going on dragon killing rampage in Skyrim because they actually did attack everything and everyone and the way the died was not so gruesome. Im not complaining about DAI though, I think its a great design that makes me care about local wildlife instead of going 'ooh, come here you fire breathing bag of awesome loot'.

I hate killing them too - I love dragons, that's one of the thing I have a problem with.

However - the first time I killed the Frostback Dragon - she exploded! I had equipped my characters with weapons that had the chance to explode on kill contact and she exploded.

I literally just sat there and stared at the screen until my mum asked me what was wrong and I was just like 'she exploded'.

I'm only killing dragons during Iron Bull's romance. (since you need the tooth to complete his romance) but forget the rest. All of them are just going to like sneak by them.

I never got the baby dragon going up to mommy and just sitting there (thank god - I'd probably would have broken down over that). Probably just a glitch?

I don't feel guilty for it (I have killed all of them in my playtrough) but I have to say that killing dragons in DA:I  doesn't give me any feeling at all since it seems totally detached from the game.

I mean, when you did it in DA2 there was a purpose, also killing the high dragon in DA:O could have a purpose because you could say that you got rid of it from a sacred place, but here? Nobody (with the except of Bull) ever mention them, no npc ever complain about their presence, they are well hidden in remote corners of the map, therefore you can say it's just bounty hunting and nothing else.

The best scene in the Witcher 2 is Geralt very sadly killing a dragon, and he's a professional monster slayer.

That game is so bad that it's not even able to use the book lore correctly.

Witcher do not kill dragon, period.

No exception.

That beats turning Firkraag into a squirrel in BG2.

Of course, you can spare the dragon and hope we´ll be able to deal with the sorceress in 3.

I would feel bad about killing dragons if they didn't attack you on sight.  I mean, it's a shame because they're animals and they don't know better, but it's not like you can tranq and relocate them.  The Fereldan Frostback is like, 100 yards away from Redcliffe.  Maybe they could put in some dialog next time talking about how menacing the dragons are to the local population or something.

Animals in the real world, like wolves, bears and foxes does not attack on you sight! They will flee - usually. Unless they have young ones, they will flee. They don't like coming into contacts with humans or humanoids like elves, quanari etc. I always find it very amusing, in DAO, that every bear, every wolf etc. will always attack you. Also, the normal bears and wolves will attack you. Blight wolves and bligt bears, I can understand attack you, but not the normal ones. I an elder scroll game, like Oblivion or Skyrim, the animals won't attack you, unless you attack them. I would like to see Bioware, for once, try to make a game where the animals just don't attack you on sight. Maybe DAI is such game....? the exception being the dragons that will attack you on sight...

edit:

People have been wanting dragons for a long time, since the game is called Dragon Age, so Bioware put them in the game. Why? I don't know....If they are, as you say, detached from the game. And you really only need to kill one of them (for a romance with Iron Bull). People seem to (most people anyway) seem to like being able to kill dragons no matter the reason. Dragons seem just to voted in as one big bad animal e.g. it must die. Just because.

edit 2:
There's not even a mention of them by one the npcs in the game e.g. in Skyhold where one of blacksmiths say something like, "please go and get me some dragon scales. I can make really good and nice armour(s) for your soldiers, Inquisitor". And there doesn't seem to be an npc asking you to bring him (5 dragon feet, for luck maybe?) except Iron Bull which mentions the dragoon tooth in his romance?

Or brake the spell controlling her.

I've always killed dragonling first. I'll have to check if this is actually scripted, or just a random bug.

Had the same thing happen with a dragonling up on the hill after I killed the Ferelden Frostback. At first I just shrugged and went down the hill where a few more dragonlings were left over - they attacked on sight. After taking care of them, I noticed that the dragonling from the hill had come running too. He was registered as an enemy, except he didn't attack. Just stood there and watched us. I guess I could have attacked, but why? He wasn't doing anything.

So I started looking around the area and collecting loot. And he followed us around, keeping a little distance but always close enough that we were still in his field of vision. (For example, I went up the hill again to explore the little area behind it up north. After half a minute or somesuch, he hopped after us. Up until he could see us again, then he slowed down... and watched us again.)

That continued until I was about to leave the area, he didn't follow us that way. When i looked back from the stone overhang where you start the battle from, he sat at the foot of the hill and stared at the area before him which was littered with dragonling leftovers from the battle. Poor thing looked like he was in shock.

I'm probably interpreting far too much into a bug, but if it's scripted or not, either way it's really cool. You feel so bad for him.

At the end of the fights, one of the Dragonlings that I hadn't finished off earlier in the fight ran up to momma's body and just...sat there without attacking me.  Little dragon orphan kinda killed the victory high...

DA4 player character confirmed?

They brought this on themselves. A dragon should know better than to come between an Inquisitor and his collectable shards.

TL;DR

Dragons are reptiles, they shouldn't be feeling anything. Don't feel bad, I bet that same dragon would eat its young if given the right circumstances.

I don't feel bad for anything that tries to kill me in the way I fear most in real life. Fire....ohhhhh god fire....just no!!

But, have you guys ever played Dark Souls? I refuse to kill Sif and always find ways around it. Just can't do it. That always feels too tragic to me.

This made a list of "top enemies we didn't want to kill" on Youtube. I didn't play, but the guy describes very well what you are talking about.

This is one of my major complaints about Farcry3 (and I assume 4), along with the stupid hunter quests. Oh yeah, big, tough warrior must kill 5 dogs with the RPG. Kill bears with a machine gun. Stupid. Yet every "predator" attacks you if you get close.

I didn't play the Yorveth path yet, but I had a detail spoiled for me that makes it even more significant, if I understood the spoiler correctly.

You probably understood it correctly, you murderer.  I haven't played Roches path, so I don't know what I'm missing but, dang, Iorveth's path.  *whistles*

Lol I thought I was the only weird one here feeling bad about attacking the dragons. They feel so personal in this game. In Skyrim I killed so many dragons that it became a chore and never thought about what I was hunting. Plus after a while I'd kill them in 3-4 hits lol. Best dragons in any game I've seen so far. It's a coin toss between this and Dragons Dogma.

No killing dragons makes me feel like **** as well, there is no point to it other than killing for killing sakes and loot, the dragons pretty much seem to keep to themselves until you turn up, slaughter their children and then them as well.

You would have to question the ecological consequences of removing such a predator from the food chain as well, The Hinterlands for example is already massivly overrun with overly agressive bears, another reason why people headcanoning dragons attacking humans to make themselves feel better are pretty much straight up wrong. Absolutely zero reason for dragons to bother with humans when there are so many fat bears running around the place, in fact I think dragons are probably a fairly valuble asset to humans in keeping those bear numbers down.

That happened to me as well.  Poor lil baby dragon ran up to the nest and stared sorrowfully at its mother's corpse.

Then I slayed it for its phat crafting materials.

The storekeeper in Crestwood mentions that the dragon has killed people. Also aren't there human/elven skeletons in some dragon lairs?

Yea I felt like in Skyrim they had more evil feel to them, whereas in DAI they are more majestic. That is so sad about the babies running to their momma, I have not killed any dragons yet, but it makes me not want to do it.
