Just curious... I don't know why but I just feel like it's weird playing a dwarf. Human and elf are always my first choice, then qunari male looks cool too. Dwarf... is just a weird idea.
How many people play dwarves?

My other PCs always end up being good-looking versions of their respective races. Dwarves seem to give me some sort of freedom to craft a gnarled, tough-looking character who isn't so attractive. I'm not sure why that is, but it's one thing that makes dwarves a cool option, for me.

I play dwarves pretty often. My canon warden is a dwarf. I created a dwarf in DAI that I've yet to play through with (but I will). That dwarf looks exactly like my dad, so I'll RP him. It's gonna be a hoot. "What izzat, some kind of damn hoodoo? Stab!" I can't imagine a world where he thinks magic is anything other than pure evil, since that's what he thinks of technology.

I play lady dwarves a lot, but I've never finished a playthrough on a male dwarf.

Over the years media have build up a weird stereotype about dwarves, that they are funny and upright mostly, but unsophisticated. They are hero-ish but not so main-character-ish, like ogren, varic, gimli, muradin...

Tyrion Lannister would like a word.

I'm seriously considering a male dawrf playthrough for my next run of Inquisition. Party because I've never played Dragon Age as a Dwarf before, and partly because they're the only race with halfway decent and unique hair options in the character creator XD

Playing a male dwarf warrior on my current playthrough, and I'm quite pleased with it. ![]()

Tyrion Lannister would like a word.
That's not the kind of dwarf I mean... I mean mythological-humanoid-creature dwarf, not human-with-dwarfness dwarf.
And obviously you are just joking so never mind...

What about Oakenshield from the Hobbit movies? He seems like a good hero and leading character.

I'll have to next time. Elf and Qunari so far.
Avoiding humans though so BioWare doesn't have another reason to scrap non-human playable races.

It honestly feels natural that the hero to save the world would come from the battle hardened Dwarven race.

Dwarves are my favourites
. My first Inquisitor was one, and I'll play dwarf at least once more at some point. (Next run is going to be male qunari.)
To answer your question, though, not that many people play dwarves from a statistical point of view. They were the least popular race in DAO. However, I love them precisely because they make somewhat unconventional leads.

Look, I get it. Races you're unfamiliar with can fall outside of your comfort zone. I started out the same way when I picked up my first MMO. I had no idea what dwarves, gnomes, trolls, and ogres were about. They intimidated me. Humans were safer since they were more familiar. Elves were the next step on that "exotic race" ladder so I tried those after. Once I understood game lore better, I tried out a gnome and something just really clicked. There was a joy in this tiny creature and such freedom to play however I wanted -- snarky, flippant, chaotic, and so on. And the people that played gnomes? It was like finding a hidden community of people I'd gladly share a beer with. If I passed them in my travels, they'd stop and greet me warmly. (The dwarf thread in the character forum is the same way.) I rarely play humans unless it's the only option available (Commander Shepard, Hawke).
If the appearance bothers you, then read up on their background. If they're not interesting enough for you to try out, then move on. No harm, no foul.

Most of my characters in Origins and Inquisition have been Elves.
I do like playing Dwarven sword and board Warriors, but this time around my Warrior is based off one of my RPing characters who is Human.

I've always preferred playing a dwarf, but in Dragon Age I've just never felt compelled to. I guess I just prefer their lore in IPs like Lord of the Rings or Warhammer. In Dragon Age the just seem rather bland.
My opinion, of course! Please don't kill me.

I roleplay my dwarves as if I'm Ogren. That is to say I kick ass, take names, flirt with anything that identifies itself as female and spend lots and lots of time in the tavern. My dwarf tends to also not care if he pleases anyone. Not a single sodding nug was given this day.
