Elf lore mainly for elf mages? Templar lore for humans?

Hello everyone,

So I just picked up Inquisition today for the PS4 and plan to start playing it tomorrow. I am having a difficult time deciding what race/class to play as my first time through. I would like to pick one that fits the lore really well so I can get a lot out of the story before I start playing on nightmare and such on repeat play throughs. I have heard that a human mage is really good as well as a elf mage, however I was also thinking of an elf rogue...

So is the elf lore in the game mainly focused on mages or just elves in general? Would I get more out of it as a mage or would being a rogue do just fine? I am just having a difficult time picking between human and elf for my mage, but if I can get the same experience on an elf rogue as I can an elf mage, then I will make the mage human and just make an elf rogue later on.

Also if I decide to be an elf mage, instead of human, how well would a human templar fit into the story for a future playthrough?

People tend to recommend mages as the most story compliant because a lot of Dragon Age deals with magic and the Fade. If you're not a mage, a lot of times those sections feel inconsequential for the character since they don't really have a stake in those topics. There's a good deal of stuff regarding elves that doesn't have anything to do with magic, though, so an elf rogue isn't a bad choice at all. That section doesn't come up until late in the game, though.

Anyway, an elf rogue and a human mage would be good choices if you want to play twice.

I really depends on your taste. As an elf mage, you can experience topics like the danger of magic, how your clan treat magic, elven pride etc. As a human mage, you get to experience topics of the danger of magic, your view towards the Circle, your family etc. It really depends on your preference. Do you like to see more about the Circle or Dalish clan?

You must play a templar as a human. A human would the role of templar the most lore-wise as this is a Chantry-related role (though you need not enter the templar order). Templar requires one's endurance and faith. DAI talks much about templars and the templar order. There will also be unique dialogs if you are a templar.

I honestly feel like the story works well with all races and classes. You get compelling reasons to be there and care about everything just by virtue of the plot and what happens to you.

But from what you're saying. I think elf and human probably are what you're looking for, but I don't think mage v rogue has any huge difference, tbh. I've played both and didn't think Mage really had a leg up. Others may disagree.

Tried an Elf run, after 50+ hours it still felt disjointed and hollow, deleted it.

My 170+ hours Human Male Noble S & S Templar run on the other hand is the most fun I have had since my Kensai Mage Bhaalspawn in BG2.

So my vote is Human Templar, but I am currently running a Human Female Mage, so I'll see how that goes.

My human mage playthrough felt the most natural. There are sections that make not much sense if you're not a mage - your companions comment on it ("...even though you're not a mage! *surprise*") but it still felt odd to me. Also, as a human (circle) mage your stakes are higher and your opinion on the Mage/Templar conflict is more personal. But then I always play mages and any other class works well, too, so YMMV.

My second playthrough was with an Elf Archer, but that was worse than a non-mage playthrough. There are sections that are really well done and change considerably if you're an elf, but many others don't. Characters go on explaining to you what "the Elves" do, and are, and stuff, even though you are supposed to be Dalish and know all this yourself. If your character was a city elf, I'd understand, but as one of the Dalish? That your interest in ancient elven lore would be much higher than that of any other race isn't really reflected too well too IMHO.

Also one or two scenes relating to the main missions were extremely jarring to me: because sometimes your character is not supposed to understand elvish because it would ruin the story, so it is assumed s/he does not understand... but eh, your character does...?

So, my recommendation for a first playthrough would be a human mage.

IMO human Mage makes most sense, followed by elf everything, followed by human Warrior/Rogue, followed by Dwarf (if Brother Burkel runs a Chantry in Orzammar) otherwise tied with Qunari, followed by Qunari.

This of course means people will go out and play as a Qunari just because it makes the least sense. And I'm glad they have that option.

If you want to see the unflapple dogma of the church at it's finiest, pick any non-human.

Honestly, pick which ever option appeals to you.  Human mage may fit the story to the point of being cliche but all the other race/class combinations bring unique perspectives to the story.

Find an rp concept that works for you. Sometimes that's not the obvious.

I do think that mages get some story content that others don't, though you could take the Arcane Knowledge perk even as a non-mage and get some of that as well, if you think it fits your character. Really you have to enjoy the gameplay first of all, because this game is big and takes a bit of work to get through. If you hate mage gameplay, it's not worth it to slog through just for some bits and bobs which are really window dressing.

female elves that romance Solas get the most elven content; though I recommend people playing what they wish to play. Human, dwarf, Elf, Qunari and any class combo works out well in the game. Just play what you like to play :)

Having played two elves and two humans (one mage/one non mage) as well as a dwarf (and currently qunari), I'll say the humans and elves tend to fit Inquisition's story far better than the other two.

Elves are great as far as world/lore goes, plus companions have more of a reaction and dialogue options. Humans fit the central story better (given the human centric plot).

Dwarves and qunari feel more like add ons. Dwarves don't get much acknowledgment about their race in general (not even from Varric, who you'd think would have some reaction, but he's completely indifferent). Qunari do elicit many NPC reactions though they are sort of out of place as far as story and plot goes. They're still fun to play as though so don't let that deter you from trying out different race/class combos. (This coming from someone who in one play through made a female elf warrior who specced as a templar, romanced Cullen and vaguely 'converted' to Andrastianism over the course of the game).

I've been finding female elf mage has been really rewarding from an elven lore perspective. Especially being in a romance with Solas.

Im keen on trying a human templar and siding with the Templars.

I think female Dalish gets more content than male?
