Also, I don't think Lyrium gets turned into Red Lyrium just by Darkspawn touching it.

Otherwise, Red Lyrium would drastically outnumber Blue Lyrium.

This. I don't think the process of lyrium turning into its red variation is as simple, as coming into a contact with the taint. The Deep Roads are filled with lyrium, yet the ancient thaig was the only source of red lyrium up until DA:I. I'd assume Corypheus had a hand in its conversion.

Presumably, the original Idol in DAII was a VERY old piece, corrupted by something OTHER than the Blight. That thaig was WELL older than the first Blight, so how did the lyrium used to create the Idol get corrupted in the first place?

 

I don't have answers for that, but as for the red lyrium itself, Samson was using people to grow and spread it.

Exactly. They never really explained HOW it spread from one templar to another, or how red lyrium suddenly sprang up everywhere (if they did, I missed it). So it's definitely plausible for Fenris to be infected.

Like I said, the original Red Idol was BEFORE the Blight, before darkspawn and corruption. Perhaps it is something older? Darker?

 

Corypheus may be the only Darkspawn (that we know of) capable of infecting lyrium with the blight in modern day Thedas.
