Does it matter which two trees the mage specialises in?

Sorry if this is a dumb question. Aside from a few hours on Dragon Age 1 this is my first game in the series.

I am a level 9 Elf Mage. I have been putting points into Storm/Lightening and Ice, I have Solas who is using Spirit mostly, and a bit of Fire.

Is there a particular synergy between groups? Like should one of them have Fire and Ice because they work better together?

Thanks

Not really.... tbh it's more what you like. You might want to look at Passives and find what sounds the best for you. If you're looking for highest damage then you should go down the Fire tree, CC is Ice tree, and a mix of both is is lightning. The Spirit tree is mainly for defensive purposes, though some of it's Passives are pretty neat!

Also there are the the Specs you can choose!

KE is best used as a Tank as it has a regenerating barrier Passive.

Rift Mage is good for CC as well, but they have Firestorm which has some really good damage on it!

Necro is a different type to me, definitely has some high damage output with it's Walking Bomb and the upgrade.

It's preference but, barrier is very useful no matter what. Also you will have a specialization choice later, Necromancer (AoE/Control) Rift Mage (Ranged DPS) or Knight Enchanter (Melee DPS) No matter what it's good to focus on one elemental tree, get barrier and have one or two spells in another in case enemy is immune to primary spells.

Is the AI OK with using Barrier? As in, Solas is Spirit so far (it's in Spirit, right?) so if I leave him with it will it be used, or do I need to take control of him to work?

There are certain spells you might want to pick up, as they perform a bit better than the rest. For instance, you want to get Winter's Grasp, Winter's Stillness and Fade Step in the Winter tree regardless of build. That gives CC, much needed mana regen and survivability/movement. From there you want Energy Barrage, as it's a core spell in any mage build. Then it's free for all really. I'd also recommend getting Barrier + Guardian Spirit in Spirit. This adds for a good "OH ****!" passive and a solid survival ability when needed.

You can:

Go down Inferno and get Fire mine - cheapest high damage spell there is.

Go down Winter for Frost Mine and Blizzard - More control, if needed.

Go down Storm for Static Cage - control and damage.

I do recommend the passives in Inferno regardless though. Clean Burn and Flashpoint. Chance for a no CD spell? lowering CDs? Damn yeah!

That means regardless of what you want to build,

3 in Inferno: Immolate --> Flashpoint --> Clean Burn

3 in Winter: Winter's Grasp --> Winters stillness and fade step

2 in Spirit: Barrier --> Guardian Spirit

1 in Storm: Energy Barrage

Which means the core of core is built by level 7, or 6 as human. Upgrading Energy Barrage and Fade Step are also recommended, but that's not a hurry.

--------------------------

In case you wondered:

Spirit - support/survival

Winter - damage/Survival/CC

Fire - Damage/A tad control

Storm - Damage/A lot of control

--------------------------

The AI does fine with Barrier. Solas cast barrier as soon as combat is started, so everybody gets it. If you have upgraded barrier, that means as that barrier end, 16 second off the CD is cut (so it is ready to be cast in mid-combat).

However, during combat he tends to prefer the character at lowest health. This isn't always good. If I got low health, as I tend to do, and am far away, he will cast on it me -- regardless if the tank got 4 enemies hitting him/her. Oh well!

But, yeah. AI does a decent job with barrier. No need to worry about that!

Great stuff, that is very helpful. Didn't actually occur to me to put points into all four groups!

If I follow this advice, 5 of my 8 spell slots are taken up. Also Energy Barrage breaks Winter Stillness. It's anti synergy. Which is not to say that these aren't great spells. It's just that not every build will carry all of these spells.

You can't follow this list and have your Focus ability and have your specialization abilities and have any deeper spells all at once. Something's gotta give.

You got:

Winter's Grasp

Energy Barrage

Barrier

Fade Step

4 of 8. You can also take away barrier if you want too. You don't take Immolate to use -- you take it so you can get further down.

Out of those 4 you want 1 for Focus. Okay. that leaves 3.

Fire Mine/Static Cage

+

2 abilities from specialization. If you need more, take away barrier. If you'd rather have, say, Chain Lightning that Winter's grasp -- go get it.

Also, I agree on Winter's Stillness -- However. 30% Cd reduction and it's your only reliable mana regen at low level. By starting the encounter with it, you just got yourself some good seconds with 50% mana regen and 30% cd reduction.
