I know NK is a huge fortress now. All those "Civil defense", stuff and Jazz.

Even USA can't conquer it easily.

Not really. It's military is a paper tiger. All those people at arms ... with gear that came from the USSRs decade old stockpiles.

Largest military budget by GDP (around 15% - ~10 billion $) in the entire world ... and so ****** poor that South Korea with it's ~2,5% budget of GDP EASILY triples the NK budget.

I would also not hold that populace attributed fanatism to a too high standard. While it's true that the populace has been systematically indoctrinated for decades, it is also true they survive on scraps, basically living in one perpetual famine. In a figure of speech: you can have as many hungry dogs on a leash as you want, but let's see how loyal they are when the enemy comes not just with sticks and guns, but with food and warm blankets.

A war with NK wouldn't be as much of a war as it would be one massive lightshow at the start and then at minimum half a century of humanitarian catastrophy.

Really the only reason SK puts up with their antics is for one because NK has Seoul in range of lots of fortified artillery (meaning Seoul would essentially vanish in a case of actual war), but mostly because they know NK can't follow up on all those threats, because if NK ever tried to march across that 38th parallel, they'd get smacked silly by the SK armed forces alone, nevermind what any NATO forces available at the time would be doing when they join in.

I was disappointed that they responded to threats like that. I wish they had gone forward with the film.

I worry that this opens the door to everyone with a political grudge to simply make an empty threat, and successfully shut down a movie or art project that they feel offended by, somehow.

I'm sure the movie will come out one way or the other. Either Sony just leaks ("we got hacked, they stole our movie!") the movie to give the offenders a middle finger salute, or they just wait a while, let the press run its hype, then show it anyway after the news practically made a massive marketing campaign for free.

Nuke it?

And waste all those perfectly useful mountains? Naw, just let South Korea roll them over if a military solution is what you want. Would suck for Seoul, though. All that artillery.

I love your thinking.

China will never allow it. It's not in China's interests to let a U.S.-friendly South Korea gain the peninsula. Not to mention it would kind of invalidate the sacrifice of Chinese blood it took for North Korea to even exist to this day.

Korea has traditionally been under China's thumb as a tributary state since the Yuan dynasty, and China today is butting heads with most of its neighbors to assert dominance. I doubt they'll give up on the one state that's totally dependant on them.

Unless my political mind is wrong, I see Chine having gotten progressively fed up with its neighbours' antics. Nevermind that South Korea, is a much, much, MUCH better market for the growing chinese economy. Really the only bad thing that would happen to China if it came to war would be thousands of NK refugees wandering into China. And even that can be monetized if they are smart and just take them, play good pals with the NATO during the conflict and then offer to harbour some refugees in exchange for UN funding and humanitarian aid.

When i first heard this news, It REALLY, REALLY pissed me off. We do NOT play by their rules, And we do NOT negotiate with terrorists. President Barack Obama has encouraged the American people in an interview to go and see the film, And Game of Thrones creator is offering to play it in his theater.

Why is it that America and Europe are quick to rush to war against the "tyrants of the Middle East" but are too scared of a tyrannical midget in North Korea? What makes North Korea different to the Islamic militants?

We need to eliminate this filthy communism once and for all. We should stop trying to reason with countries that are officially communist states. North Korea's crimes against humanity are shockingly reminiscent of Nazi Germany, except they're actually worst and that takes some achievement.

It's funny, the western media has all been attacking Russia for the past year but they've mostly ignored North Korea until recently (well there have been a few tiny columns about them but not front page news). How is it that North Korea has been ignored for so long when its government kills people of different sexualities, people who are mentally ill, anybody who is religious and people with physical disabilities (such as dwarfism)? How is it that Russia got more attention over that because of a few of Putin's policies? It's like the west is scared of NK and the pulling of this film is proving that.

Release the film I say. Create a "draw Kim Jong un" day and have the entire world follow it. The west shouldn't be bullied into submission.

How will America respond to this act of cyber-terrorism I wonder?

"n-no pls don't hack us again Mr.Un, look we're withdrawing the movie, it's okay, p-pls continue with your crimes and keep your political prisoners from other countries, including our own who you use as slaves, we won't attack you."

It's time to eliminate North Korea, deal with this pathetic midget and have South Korea take over the North, finally forming a country simply called "Korea" that will be ruled with diplomacy where its people can have freedom.

But I doubt this will happen. War will only happen as soon as North Korea makes its move and it will happen one day. It's what they've been planning for years. Nobody builds up a huge military just to ****** off to it at night-time.

South Korea is better economically for China. I don't think they're thinking purely economically, however. A united Korea would put U.S. influence on China's border.

From things I've read, North Korea feels China needs them as well because they're the only voice of support China has as it bangs heads with South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, the Phillipines, and their U.S. ally over various island claims. They also feel that a stronger DPRK is a stronger China.

In any case, the key to a free and united Korea is through more change in China I think. And I really want to see this movie now.

Believe me, I wish we could be done with these Cold War relics. I was less than pleased about the Cuba news yesterday.

How pathetic, bunch of corporate hacks and their shareholders shaking in fear at some small dog barking at them.

If anybody finds a missing spine please return it to the western world.

China is the difference. We're almost as dependent on them as NK is at this point.

And people call China's military a "paper tiger" but I'd like to see them put their money where their mouth is. We have trouble keeping insurgents in the Middle East in line, nevermind a showdown with the PLA. We are not invincible.

I saw Newt Gingrich was outraged about it so I was immediately inclined not to care.

But my favorite line was how Unamerican it was for Sony to do that.

I was going to see this film anyway, I'm just upset that North Korea didn't do this sooner. They could have stopped the Star Wars prequels.

You know exactly why they didn't stop the Star Wars prequels. Jong-Il hoped to see the schematics for the Deathstar so he could create one and conquer the world. And now that he died, he is more powerful than you could ever imagine.

Sony Pictures and more importantly the American movie theater companies folding before NK's empty threats sends the message that the US gov can't defend any corporate interests operating within it's borders or protect it's civilians from hostile foreign powers. After seeing how a big name studio, and companies caved in to terrorist threats what's stopping terror groups who have actually followed through with their threats from believing that they can now be rewarded for their demands?

The jihadis must be loving this.

Disappointing, but remember that Sony would get spitroasted if even one person was killed due to them releasing this movie.

You people are so touchy about theatre massacres.

As Ophir said, if they had shown this movie it likely would have gone without a hitch, but if some actually HAD bombed a theatre, Sony would have been crucified.
