The Steam holiday sale is live. Go get KOTOR now for $6.69.

Alternatively, you could get KOTOR on Gog.com now. I'd say it's better than getting it on Steam, given you actually own the game when you buy it on the former. I don't think the price is that much different. You can also pick up Jade Empire in there which is an excellent game too. Otherwise I guess there's ME1, Origins & Inquisition. Those are among the games I really liked from BioWare.

KotOR is a master piece. I reccomend it!

And:

BTW, if youa re not strictly limiting yourself to BW games, but are just looking for good story-heavy RPGs, also consider looking at Obsidian titles. They made the sequels to both KotOR and NWN and they also made an original RPG (and a personal favorite of mine), Alpha Protocol.

Yes, this. Just download TSLRCM from Deadly Stream before starting to play KotOR 2.

I bought KotOR! Now it's tough choice between Jade Empire and Baldur's Gate 2. What are the positives and negatives of each? And which one would you recommend I play?

As a side note: I'll probably end up playing both, but I just want to compare them so I can see which one I'd like best.

BG is the more classic RPG. Lot's of stats, very customizable party, tactical pausable combat. Also, you need the patience to read lot's of text but the story is very good and it's got lot's of content. Obviously, it's classic fantasy from an isometric perspective.

Jade Empire is the more cinematic presentation, fully voiced and with visuals that still look ok these days (mainly because of the rather unique far eastern style). The combat is more action based (in the direction of a beat'em up) with a combo system and less stats to worry about. The story is also very good if rather linear.

They are both great games in their own right. Preference really is all about taste. BG has often been compared to reading a book while JE is probably closer to watching a movie. I still think if you are going to go with BG, think about starting with the first one (with mods).

Aye, both games have near universal acclaim. If Dark Fantasy Medieval gaming with a shakespearean foe sounds like it'll whet your whistle, go for it. If you want a divergence from classical settings and would rather Kung-Fu your way to victory, Jade Empire is it.

BG has often been compared to reading a book while JE is probably closer to watching a movie.

Makes a great deal of sense. Also, the word count for BG2 with the expansion is sky high. From Here

Baldur’s Gate II (2000) – 1,200,000 words
Neverwinter Nights (2002) – 200,000 words
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2003) – 600,000 words
Dragon Age: Origins (2009) – 900,000 words

SWTOR is pretty good, mostly free* and a lot better than KOTOR in this age. Actually even ignoring the advantage of being newer the stories on some classes are better than KOTOR's.

*it's also probably more comfortable to get preferred status but you don't really have to sub at all to play it as a single player game.

Knights of the Old Republic or Neverwinter Nights, I'd say.

Though, I have to say, the second KotOR game (with the fanmade patch) is so, so much better than the previous iteration of the series.
