Does he? One could argue that he's just thoroughly indoctrinated and blinded by the Qun, and afraid to live outside of it and/or having to fight against spirit possession and all the responsibility that comes with it.
Not to incite real life analogies but suicide due to fear and faith-adherence isn't anything I'd call "badass"; I'd call it fanatically dumb and weak.
Perhaps.
Though I do believe that his willpower and determination is something to admire even though, like you wrote, it is perhaps fanatically dumb and cowardly.
