I've read the Black CIty threads, pondered all the hypotheses, and I confess I still don't see what's the big deal about the pictures. Yes, there's a person clutching another person in the idol, but they don't look anything like how Solas+Flemeth look. Maybe I am being too concrete here, but besides the matter of scaling, there's just no resemblance. Am I missing something that others are connecting?

I'm with you. They look nothing alike, I see no similarity at all personally.

They said Inquisition was what they wanted when it comes to scale. Story wise, they've already said that they've been planning for DAI since DAO, and it was in development during DA2's development which is pretty evident when you look at all the threads in DA2 (i.e. Corypheus, Mythal, Red Lyrium)
Looking back, DA2 looks more and more like a prologue to Inquisition and beyond. That said, I still think it's weird that Corypheus was in a DLC and not the main game given his subsequent importance.

Considering that there is a third person present on the idol I'm inclined to think that this is a coincidence.

I don't know about anyone else but the similarities I saw....
The way Idol Flemeth is grabbing onto Idol Solas is off a bit from the in-game scene, but the Idol Flemeth has a little point on her head similar to her metal hair-thing, and there's something that looks like hair behind the Idol Flemeth's head, like Game Flemeth. Both Flemeths also have shriveled nasty zombie heads. (Well I think Game Flemeth does)
And then the Idol Solas's baldness.
It's not much to go on but *shrug*

But anyway, if lyrium is alive and DAO implied it can capture souls (not just golems, but all those spirits around the dead trenches), I suppose it stands to reason that an idol of that nature might hold the corrupted soul of a god.

Okay, I think it's probably just Meredith. She had a similar metal head spike thing, plus she was the one actually driven insane by the idol in that game, and as SamanthaJ pointed out, there are three figures, not two.

This might be just a coincidence.
But if it's not... hot damn. Dat planning.
Albeit I did see someone point out that the altar where we brought Flemeth back in DA2 was the Altar of Mythal. hmmm...
Bioware and coincidence do not roll well off the tongue together. So what do you think of this: https://www.youtube....h?v=mYFTX_2F0X4

Eh, they don't really look alike that much. Seems more like a coincidence.

Huh. Could just be a coincidence. Could be a deliberate similarity, but just to mess with us all.
In any event its a nice catch, OP.

Who said they planned it all along and not just used existing info bits from previous games, or even some of more credible fan theories on DA:I? After all, the theory of Flemeth = Mythal was circulating for a long long time.

The third person looks like a child to me. Maybe Keiran, and the idol represents the last 3 remaining god-like entities who are uncorrupted that remain on Thedas.
One big ol' god idol really.

Well, it's entirely possible that this 3rd person will be someone for next DLC/game

Unfortunately...I don't see it. Definitely spooky, and I do think there's likely a connection between red lyrium, elves, elven gods, and the old gods.
But the statue isn't referencing the ending. For one, there's three people in that statue and they appear to be being eaten by a dragon or burned. The most similar thing is the fact that the top figure is somewhat wearing a crown similar to Mythal- and it could be referencing her death. But the lack of elf ears is a bit strange, and while there's the possibility they were worshipped in Tevintar, Mythal wouldn't have been one of the ones to do so. [7 old gods/7 sealed elven gods, minus Fen'Harel and Mythal.]
Still, really interesting find. I do think the red lyrium means something. Just probably not the ending.

I think it's clear after DAI that Bioware's DA team planned the plot, but this is a really interesting find and gives base to some of my theories.
Considering that there is a third person present on the idol I'm inclined to think that this is a coincidence.
Perhaps not, since the final scene had, essencialy, three people. Solas, Flemeth and Mythal's wisp. Symbolic it works.
Hell, even more if you count Urthemiel's soul and the possible fragment of herself Flemeth sent to the mirror. But I'll admit that's reaching.

I would not say "common." Only three characters in all of Thedas history are known to wear that type of headgear. Two of them are legends and borderline gods. It is not common by any stretch of the imagination.
