I can't believe the crap coming from people in voice chat, "no don't skill into that it's crap." Half of them don't even know what they're talking about! People on these kinds of multiplayer games just want the easy mode builds.

Well guess what? I'm going to carry my team to more victories with my Arcane Warrior that has a maxed out Mentalist tree (except Dispel & one of the passives) because I will constantly have little to no "aggro" and can be the designated revival role because of it. On top of that I will flank enemies unnoticed, take them out one by one, or even get a couple critical hits on two or three at once to generate barrier that way instead of the easy mode veil ability everyone uses. I can even flank things like demon commander and he hardly even notices I'm there until he takes some damage from me, and by that point I just casually walk away before he can put me into fear. Meanwhile all the other arcane warriors will be drawing aggro, getting very low health and using barriers as a crutch instead of a tool, and getting their teams to wipe. I mean sure if you're smart you can pull it off but these builds are not for smart players IMO...

It's ridiculous. 90% of the spells and abilities people hate on are VERY good, they just require a measure of intelligence and strategy to use.

Thats fine and dandy, but while you take out enemies one by one, I just pull them in to a ball of death and kill them all almost instantly.  Does that make me a better player? No. Is the build more effective? I would say so.

I don't disagree with you, but because you brought up AW particularly I thought I'd mention it. I have build many character the "wrong" way and as you might struggle in the beginning, you will eventually warm to it and make it work. I have yet to put together a build I thought was actually totally useless.  You make it work by playing well, and smart.

Like most games with limited ability slots the community will come up with fictitious "Best builds" for each class. Granted, there are skills that synergize together very well and fit a certain role of that particular character. There are also abilities that are good for team play vs soloing. Lets take arcane warrior for example, pull of the abyss is a great CC ability but many builds you see say it is a waste of skill points due to the 35 second cool down on it. I know that when I am playing other classes I love it when PoA pops and I can stand there and slay monsters in their weekended state.

I found Alchemist totally useless. I tried speccing Elemental Mines and I tried focusing on the Toxic Cloud, both suck. Can't figure out a way of making a decent character out of the Alchemist without making it an Assassin.

Elemental bombs, Knockout bomb, stealth and stealth strike. This gives you good CC and good single target damage. The alch will always be something of an assassin as it requires a similar combat style but has the option for Crowd control.

The Arcane Warrior is the only character that excels at tanking, crowd control and dps. Your build doesn't tank, has poor crowd control and probably doesn't do a lot of damage. You took the most overpowered character in the multiplayer and made him mediocre. Good job.

FROST FLASK! It makes you a bit tanky and is nice to draw hate for a second, then Stealth followed by Shadow Strike and then knock out Bomb what is left. It's a lot of fun and very survivable.

Also I feel those skills you speak of are terrible cause they don't offer any bonuses to the team. PoA gives weaken and CC, Chain Lightning Shocks, Fade Cloak is survivability and Spirit Blade is to wreck **** cause spirit damage is OVER POWERED! Dispel is meh, Veil Strike is situational, an argument can be made for Stone Fist cause it rocks (lol see what I did there), Mind blast does not always work as intended and that's all the abilities I can think of off the top of my head.

For the alchemist to not be like an assassin is a bit difficult as it is a dual dagger wielding assassin-class, but if you want do well with the elemental mines, you have to have fire flask with the upgrade. Get stealth, mines, fire flask and shadow strike - all upgraded. This way you can play assassin on smaller groups and maybe drop out a volley of mines here and there, but make sure you have CD finished before you reach the larger groups. This is when you pop fire flask and then proceed to spam out mines. Great AOE damage and some CC. Pop stealth before fire flask runs out and then go back to being an assassin for a little while.

Not the greatest video but an example on how you can play it.

Played with a guy last night who says he specializes on the Necro and Walking Bomb wasn't useful for the character. I laughed. He didn't like playing with me once I showed him how to use it.

Well yeah, that's what I did. I tried the upgraded 'Elemental Mines' under the effects of upgraded 'Fire Flask' and while it's all very Christmasy, I find it quite lackluster on the DPS or even CC department.

It's pretty awesome to cause so many different kinds of status effects, but on practice it's either not that good, or the effects are too subtle for me to see a real benefit.

Also tried the Toxic Cloud and it's related skills, on paper it looked pretty similar to Walking Bomb, I couldn't have been more wrong.

I guess all I can do at this point is go for Shadowstrike so I don't feel completely useless with my Alch until I hit 20 and promote her until I get some reason to make another Alch build.

What's I'm getting from this is you don't play the best tank in the game as a tank role :P

I mean sure other stuff works but arcane warrior tanking is practically invincible and nobody can say it doesn't help the team

But as to your uh question, to some players anything that isn't the...optimum.. Is worthless.

it hurts to read this, can't imagine having heard it.  The whole 'specializes on Necro' is what kills me.

As of now walking bomb is great simply because that spirit possesion ability is useless not because the spell sucks, but because the AI is really dumb. 80% of the time the enemy that resurrects under your possesion just stands there.

If nothing else it can be fun to try out different builds from the norm, even if it isn't optimal/viable. But I'd avoid doing it on perilous, if I'm honest. :P

1. If you're going to make this post, OP, then at least include your build

2. The "best build" phenomenon is exactly why I enjoy the alchemist so much. I really do enjoy playing AW or Reaver but I don't see much of a point in changing my build because they're "optimal" and I wouldn't want to downgrade yet in order to experiment.
BUT, the Alchemist doesn't have a community decided "best build" because half the people that build her come up with something that totally sucks! This is the only class I've promoted twice, and each build has played very differently from the last.
Build 1: stealth, shadow strike, fire flask, elemental mines
Build 2: knockout bomb, flank strike, ice flask, fire flask
Build 3: stealth, twin fangs, poisoned blades, fire flask
