I've played Knight enchanter but so far it's rather boring...other than making me OP with a yellow sword it doesn't do much. Are the rest of the specialization the same?
Knight Enchanter, Rift mage or Necromancy?

Necromancer I haven't put any points into because the entire tree just looks Meh. Nothing that really jumps out as a must have besides a damage boost.

Necromancers can break quests.. Dorian did it for me many times in my first playthrough. Rift mage is pretty fun doing a playthrough with that now.

Horror works great on clustered enemies. You bascially un-buff the whole group. Some take off running. Horror with walking bomb works great for groups. Never used spirit mark, when testing. I tested all three and went with Knight Enchanter, so I could mix it up a bit.

Rift Mage is the closest I've come to feeling like a OP mess like my Hawke mage and Warden mages were. So much fun.
And yes, KE is stronger, but its a different play style. When it comes to staying at range and crushing/punching/aoe-ing all the people to death, Rift is the sweet spot for me.

I've played as Necro and KE. Necro is fun, weakest spec though, and never broke the game for me. So much fun, making enemies exploding and just let enemies fight themselves while you just watch (Pride vs Pride!).
KE is just boring. Not even OP comparing to rogues vids I see posting here.
Rift is pure fun, almost like DA2 from what I've played with Solas. I'll try that next

I dislike Rift Mage due to the fact that is a skill spam fest. If speced into fire you basically have infinite mana and infinite cooldowns with insane AoE crowd control and damage. If you like spamming TONS of AoE spells and not care about mana bar at all it is for you. Necromancer is an interesting specialization but it does not have spike damage. My favorite is knight enchanter and not because it is OP. I simply don't use shield generation skill.

Like a previous poster, I felt drawn to RM just because that poor woman will have fried her brain for naught otherwise.

I played a rift mage on my first play. I liked the idea of it because of the whole rift thing, and the passives are nice. On my second mage I'm strongly considering necro though. Using the skills through Dorian has been pretty fun. I really like the change to walking bomb that allows you to trigger the explosion, allowing for greater control of the ability. In the past I found that one of the problems with it was in getting the mob in proximity to others when it dies, but since you can trigger it manually you don't have to actually wait.

idk I've taken down entire groups with one walking bomb on hard. Necro is absolutely awesome with a rift mage like Solas.....Pull of the Abyss and walking bomb....yum.
But to the OP, I'm picking my next mage class strictly on the focus ability for now, which is rift mage(curious to see how much more damage I can do to dragons with it over mark of the rift).

Knight Enchanter, Spirit Blade and Fade Shield for the win

You mean she was normal at first? By the gods then I know I'll pick Cullen in that war table mission you get from being a rift mage.

Pull of the Abyss + Fire Mine is extremely strong for groups. If you bring Dorian for Horror and Walking bomb on top of that, there's nary any opposition.
RM isn't as tough as the KE, so you have to move now and then, and bosses and dragons can be a little tougher, but I must admit RM was more fun.

I prefer KE because I like the versatility of being able to fight in melee if enemies get too close. But my Rift Mage play through was almost as fun.

KE of course , but thats because i always liked the Arcane Warrior fighting style i want to be able to defend myself when enemies close in on me that plus shitting on Dragons.

KE is the most powerful but also the most mindless. You'll just be spamming Spirit Blade and Fade Cloak.
Rift Mage is the funnest because you can use Pull of the Abyss and **** on everything with AOE. It also seems like a natural progression for the Inquisitor since he's constantly closing rifts.

A properly specced KE can solo the game without problems. Dragons are punching bags at that point. Nothing can touch you. Does that make it the best class or just the most OP?

I thought I'd enjoy Knight Enchanter most, but after a few hours with it I found the gameplay to be far too repetitive. I just finished my second playthrough with Rift mage and really liked it, Pull of the Abyss and Stone Fist are really great.

Rift Mage is turning out to be a *lot* of fun. Almost embarrassingly so. I was tempted to do Knight Enchanter because I always seem to wind up in melee range anyway, but it's just so much fun tossing enemies around with Veilstrike and Stonefist, and as others have observed, some of the spell combos are tons of fun.
Plus, there's the RP aspect of having the anchor and being a RM.
