Hi I purchased me3 with the origin sale the other day I played through it once already but I was wondering if I should buy any of the dlc. I didn't see any that looked like I really needed. Is there any that you guys would recommend?

I tried a search on similar topics but came up empty

Thanks

Leviathan is a must have, as is From Ashes if you didn't get it with your ME3, Citadel is excellent fan service so well worth getting, Omega I'm not personally fond of, it's not integrated into the game so it adds nothing to the game other than war assets & you can't take your squaddies with you, also when you return to Normandy no body mentions your disappearence, it's like Sheps been on an unusually long toilet break so lets not talk about it.

Yah, true, but you get to fight alongside Aria.

Which is always a score in my book.

Extended Cut and From Ashes, definitely - not sure if you got them as part of the steam purchase or not.

Leviathan - I wasn't overly fond of but it provides some additional context during the end of the game (it's not earth-shattering though so don't expect too much).

Omega - pretty much standalone, but if you're a fan of Aria and/or enjoy combat-heavy missions then it's worth a look.

Citadel - from an overall story arc point of view it adds almost nothing. As a holistic celebration of a lot of what makes the Shepard trilogy great, it's unmissable, IMO. Plenty of fan service and in-jokes, you'll probably love it or hate it. Most seem to love it though, I would say.

The essential DLC in my opinion are the Extended Cut, From Ashes, Leviathan, and Citadel.

The Extended Cut is free and alters and extends the original endings of the game. I'm sure you've probably heard about the ending controversy to ME3. The EC fixes much of the stuff that made those original endings so hated, though certainly not enough for everyone. The original endings were overwhelmingly hated. The opinion on the EC was more mixed. I'd say download the EC and then watch the original endings on youtube if you're wondering what was changed.

From Ashes introduces a companion character that provides a lot of background info on the Reapers and the previous extinction cycle. And he's one of the better companion characters Bioware has written for any of its games, IMO.

Leviathan in my opinion is one of the best story-focused DLCs Bioware has done, and it provides a lot more background on what the Reapers are and how they came to be. Also the reveal at the end of the DLC is pretty cool.

The Citadel's main mission isn't a strong as Leviathan, but it is one of the better DLCs Bioware has done. And the second act (this is where the DLC really shines) is full of great interaction with all of the trilogy's surviving squadmates. Also it opens up a new area of the Citadel, an arena, and an apartment for Shepard.

The following are my feelings towards the DLC's, in order of importance (with awesomeness factoring in there a little bit)

The Extended Cut: I'm not numbering this one because it's a no-brainer. It's what the original ending should've been at the very least. The Catalyst explains itself, and gives you crucial context into everything from its purpose, the eternal inherent conflict between organics and synthetics, the function of the Crucible, and what each choice means for the galaxy.

Now, on to the 'real' DLC.....

1. Leviathan: this is my favorite DLC in the entire trilogy. Take part in an investigation of a mystery millions (if not a billion) years old. Look for clues and jump from one corner of the galaxy to the next as you begin to learn how the Reapers came to be. Featuring some of the best environments in the game, and adding substantial context to the lore of the main narrative. Complete with some great squadmate dialogue. It should not be missed.

2. From Ashes: arguably the most bad ass squadmate in the trilogy. Javik adds a great deal to the lore and provides great insight, as he is the last Prothean. He's uncompromising and doesn't pander to Shep's wishes. He tells it how it is. Or atleast he tells it how he sees it. Which is refreshing to say the least. Bring him on as many missions as possible, especially Thessia.

3. The Citadel: The most bang for your buck. A final farewell and love letter to the fans. The most witty dialogue in the entire series. The most content of any single DLC in the series. Take up residence in Anderson's apartment in the Wards. Someone is trying to erase Shepard's identity and takeaway everything he's become, including his status as a Spectre. After that's settled, have some down time with nearly every squadmate in the series (those who are still alive). And throw a big party.

4. Omega: a fairly tense affair as you return to the Terminus Systems seedy counterpart of the Citadel. Aria has been biding her time, waiting for the opportune moment to take back her space station. You won't be bringing your squadmates with you. But you won't be going solo either. Aria follows your lead, and you'll get some help from a rebel Turian female as you make your way to the heart of the station, using new weapons to fight a new enemy type. Face off against Cerberus and its best General. Influence Aria's actions with your own, which will eventually determine how the conflict is ultimately resolved.

Essential DLC - Extended Cut

DLCs that I highly recommend - everything else

I suggest getting them in this order:

Leviathan - the strongest story of all DLCs, investigation elements, unique environments, ties with the ending

Citadel - ME2 companions get more screen time, a lot of funny moments, a way to earn unlimited cash, two great weapons, unique enemies

Omega - two quite difficult combat sequences (at least for my build), two great companions (although limited to the DLC), Engineer-specific interrupt, unique enemies

From Ashes - awesome squadmate

They all, however, are pretty much must-have IMO

Extended Cut - Yes, unless you want to see the original ending first, to see what the fuss was all about. 5/5

From Ashes - Yeah, pretty much. 4/5

Leviathan - Mostly. 3/5

Omega - Not really. Worth your time but not necessarily your money. 2/5

Citadel - Yep, unless cheese really ticks you off. 4-5/5

The ratings are for 'essentialness'.

Guys, there are spoiler tags for a reason. OP hasn't specified that, but perhaps spoiling the storylines of DLCs is not the best idea?

It's not a non-spoiler forum. Hence why very few people use the spoiler tag feature.

It's ok I have a short memory and I have from ashes and the extended cut already so nothing has been spoiled. I'm the type of guy who can read spoilers then forget them before I actually play lol.

It's the only upside to all the drugs I did in the 60s. RAM is blown but the HDD still kind of works as long as I reboot before playing I forget all the things :P

Haha.

Me2 and ME3 made me a bit of a DLC-******. I bought everything, I think, minus the unnecessary "build a world-state" thing. I do t generally by DLC like that. I regretted none of my purchases, though the outfits and some of the guns were a bit useless. That said, they were cheap and worth the cost, in my opinion.

Omega is a tough call to make. I really like that segment of the game. I like ME3's combat a lot, and there are some fun fights in that DLC. I do think it was over-priced initially. I'm unsure if the price was ever reduced. Honestly, though, there were no poor story DLCs for the last two games. I'd feel like I was missing part of the experience if I didn't have them. They provide more screen time with Shepard and the crew, and more time to explore the galaxy, whether through investigation or guns-blazing combat.

If you have the money to comfortably throw at the game, I'd recommend all of the DLC, especially the story DLCs.

That's how I felt about dlc in da 2 I actually liked the game more after all of the dlc. The only one I didn't like all that much was mark of the assassin but it was ok the boss fight was actually really good. So that's why I asked I figured there would be at least one that was like legacy level must have.

I guess Leviathan is the most important, story-wise, given its focus. It also has good length and variety. I always forget that Javik is DLC, as I got him with the Collector's Edition. That DLC is a must.

So, the absolute musts would be "From Ashes", "Leviathan" and "Extended Cut". Still, if they aren't too expensive, grab the rest, too. ;)

EC is obvious so that doesn't count.

1. From Ashes - Playing ME3 without Javik is like playing Skyrim without mods.

2. Leviathan - Adds to the story. Plus,it explains the Catalyst who will....yeah,no spoilers.

3. Omega - Don't listen to what people say. Grab Omega, you won't be disappointed. Its a fantastic piece of DLC. Period. It adds to ME3 what ME3 lacks most: A huge side-quest.

4. Citadel - If you're a huge fan, this will be your dream come true. Simple as that. It adds a ton of content, but again, only true hardcore fans will love this.

I didn't tell you anything you wouldn't have got from a movie preview (if Mass Effect were a movie).

Omega adds nothing to ME3's story, it's just 1.5hrs railshooter with some Aria punch lines.

And it is obscenely overpriced.

Get off the bandwagon. In that case,Lair of the Shadow Broker adds nothing to the story as well.

Let me copy a post I made on reddit regarding Omega's quality.

--copied from reddit--

It IS worth it. Its not just about Aria,Flare or Omega.

"The story was lacking" Not true. Honestly,I'd really like a logical explanation on why people seem to think that Omega's story sucks. Of course that if you didn't care about Aria or Omega in the first place back in ME2,this DLC will look like a waste of money to you,but Omega is essentially a great example of what ME3 lacks: A giant side-mission.

I'm just gonna sum it down like this:

Pros:

  • Awesome cinematics. No spoilers, you'll see for yourself if you decide to purchase it.

  • Omega looks freaking beautiful. The whole atmosphere is fantastic (especially the stuff in the background),and you get to visit previously locations you haven't seen yet.

  • A hub filled with side-quests.

  • A great story. If you like the idea of retaking large space stations in a large,action-packed 3-5 hour campaign with some character development thrown in,you'll enjoy Omega. Period.

  • The graphics, locations, the soundtrack, and the atmosphere stand out from the rest of ME3 in terms of quality.

  • Nothing special but still worth mentioning: You actually get to see in detail the inside of a military ship (a cruiser in this case) that isn't the Normandy.

Cons:

  • After the DLC is over, everything is exactly the same as it was before. Aria even goes back to the Citadel because "Omega is still in stages of repair".

  • You can't visit Omega after the DLC is done (you can't even see on the Galaxy Map),which sucks since this was a great opportunity to get ME3 a much-needed second quest hub. Lazy ass Bioware.

  • No Normandy squadmates. Again, this has its pros and cons. On one hand, you get a break from being with the same character all the time. Your squadmates are now Aria and another Turian I won't spoil. On the other hand, this might cause Omega to look totally disconnected from the main plot.

  • Like I said,Omega is quite disconnected from the main plot, and it shows.

"No big choices" There is one big Paragon/Renegade choice, and the ending changes depending on whether you were a Paragon or a Renegade (or in between),so this isn't completely true. After all,DLC's never really had any big choices.

"No squadmates" Like I said when listing the cons,no,you don't get the Normandy squadmates, but Aria and the other Turian have unique abilities unlike any other squadmates throughout the trilogy,so that's a bonus.

Omega adds as much to the story as Tuchanka arc. You get Terminus fleet at full strength and strike a large blow at Cerberus activities in that sector.

Omega is a good DLC. I had fun playing it, and really that's all that matters when it comes to playing video games.

But I do think it's fair to say that despite being good, it's the weakest of the story DLCs for Mass Effect 3. It's a little more focused on action than story compared to Leviathan or even the Citadel, and unlike Leviathan the missions feel more like side missions than added main missions. Retaking Omega just doesn't feel that important in the grand scheme of things, unlike Shepard's investigation in Leviathan. Also unlike Leviathan and the Citadel your squadmates don't comment on the mission. If you're going to skip any DLC, Omega is the one to skip. It's good, just not as good as the others.

That isn't to say that it doesn't have some great moments however. Both Aria and another spoilery squadmate that you get make for fun temporary companions, the sections set on Omega look fantastic, the combat is a lot of fun and you face against some new enemies, and despite being more focused on action than the other DLCs, you do get interesting RPG-style choices regarding Aria and the main antagonist.
