Is Vanguard at the beginning of the game, this horrible and frustrating?

I'm going for my playthrough using a Vanguard Shepard and i'm on Omega to get Mordin, i'm in the very beginning of the game but so far this class is so horrible.

Charge is useless because:

it doesn't cause any damage on the enemies and they get stunned for like 1 second.

the shield regeneration means noting because you lose it in 2 second against the enemy fire (at least playing on INSANITY like i am right now).

there is like never a moment where you can use the charge, shoot an enemy and get cover quickly enough, the way the areas are and the movement of the enemies, leave me with no space to use the charge and do what a vanguard is supposed to do with a bit of safety.

i know it is a high risk - high reward class, but it is very frustrating and boring right now.

Any tips for a newbie on this class?

And my charge is at level 3 btw.

Vanguard has the steepest learning curve and difficulty curve in the game.

The first thing is that as a new character on Insanity you will not be able to charge at will.  You do not have enough upgrades and talents leveled up to be durable enough.  What you can do is attempt to charge enemies at the edge of their lines or lone stragglers so that you do not get overwhelmed.

Bonus power choice can also make your life a lot easier or harder.  I prefer to take Slam for new Vanguard.  Partly because on PC it won't let you select Stasis for some reason, and partly because it is one of the "1 point wonder" powers.  It is especially useful for The Professor due to the number of enemies on ledges and the fact that during the lift phase it sets up warp explosions.

Since I also do Mordin's mission first typically, my squad will be Miranda and Jacob.  I try to focus on Pull first when leveling Jacob, and for Miranda Warp is a little better for this mission than Overload.  Set Jacob to Pistol, and leave Miranda on SMG during the Blue Suns portion, then go to Pistol after you get into Blood Pack territory (because it is all armor).  You should pick your weapon depending on the target, but you will likely end up using the Pistol mainly due to how much armor there is in this mission.

Basically what you will want to do is strip armor with pistol, then use either your Slam or Jacob's pull once the armor is stripped from a mook, then hit that one with a Warp to cause an explosion (if there are other nearby enemies).  For targets on ledges, you can potentially pull them to their death, so strip their armor with weapons or Warp then use Pull.

In any case, once you get some shield and health upgrades the game will get easier, but that is a few missions away.  Redundant Field, Hard Shields, etc all help.  It basically just takes some practice.

Try this video by thataveragegatsby: Mass Effect 2: Vanguard Charging 101 (Insanity Guide). It is what I used as I learned to get by with a Biotic Charge that was less then max.

Awesome video! Wish I'd seen it during my pathetic attempts of playing a Vanguard in Mass Effect 2. Total failure was the reason I ended up almost never playing biotic characters!

I watched that video a while back, tried to do a Vanguard in ME2, and still failed miserably (normal difficulty). I gave up ever wanting to do a Vanguard in ME2. But that should not spoil all the Biotic classes for you. Vanguard is probably the most difficult class of all to use. Adept, OTOH, is fairly easy to figure out. Sentinel too if you like CQC, which I know you do.

I like agile CQC, a more ninja-like playstyle (in terms of Evolve - less Goliath, more Wraith :) ). Sentinel always seemed to me as more of a brute force juggernaut character when played for CQC. I'll give ME2 biotics another chance when I finish my DA: Origins playthrough :)

What happened to Gatsby? I was expecting his return to the ME universe shortly after the release of ME 3.
Seriously guys, you could do a lot worse as far as entertainment is concerned than spending time watching his videos. His Engineering The Asylum is probably my favorite ME 2 video series and inspired my most memorable playthrough. I call this memory "how I learned to love the combat drone".

Also recommend OnniGanon's invasive Maneuvers Infiltrator guide for ME series gameply video fanboys like me.

Err, sorry to gush guys, carry on...

Edit: To contribute more meaningfully, Sinosleep has a great Vanguard Tutorial series.

You could have barrier as your bonus power, stick to cover and just shoot the enemies. Activating Barrier is much better than charging. In other words, playing more like an Adept or a Sentinel.

And lets not forget how broken charge is. 3/4 of my deaths on insanity are from vanguard failing to charge.

Can't target them MY ***

All I can say is patience, the best tactic is to learn where charge works, and running to cover immediately after. Rinse and repeat.

Vanguard is sooo fun. Once you learn the Claymore trick, you become an even more unstoppable beast. I wish they kept the learning curve for playing the Vanguard in ME3 or atleast made the game harder. ME2 has the best Vanguard experience. It really illustrates the high risk High reward motto

I'm with this. Vanguard in ME2 felt like chessmaster... she needed to survey the battlefield, took the risks and prevail through smart thinking. ME3 was just charge and nova spam and while it was fun and effective(and I know it wasn't the only way, but by far the easiest and most obvious), it got a little boring after a while and it certainly wasn't as challenging as it used to be in the second game.

ME2 vanguard was the best vanguard.

I disagree. My usage of Novacharge dropped significantly the moment I discovered the pleasure of Charge + CryoTalon shot to the face, thus returning ME2's strategic need into ME3.

I used a Vanguard on ME1 Insanity. Nothing out of ordinary.
Engineer in ME2 Insanity.
Soldier on ME3. And ENJOYED EVERY CLASS AND CHARACTER ON ME3M.

So I wanted to replay ME2 to complete Trophies, and choose Vanguard because they were so sick and fun in ME3...

BEING VANGUARD ON ME2 WAS SO BORING AND FRUSTRATING. Vanguard's main taste, Biotic Charge is so inefficient, specially without Nova and not being able to evade, and so weak.

I mainly bring Miri cause she weaken barriers and shields, as soon as enemies are unprotected I Lift them and Miri's Warp to biotic explosion. I bring other people with Lift or Warp.

Playing as a Vanguard on ME2 after playing ME3 feels so... tasteless. This one of the many reasons why if Bioware does a ME Trilogy, they have to update ME1 and ME2 to ME3.

At least Biotic Charge plus shotgun combo works.

I agree with you, Vanguard in ME3 is my favourite biotic class but in ME2, it's not as effective and fun yet. I'm at level 9 and I'm waiting patiently to be able to use the charge without killing myself afterwards. I know I will later in the game.

The main job of Charge is to act as a gap closer to get you into melee range.  That is why you get shotgun training on this class, and they are by far the best weapons when you are within the "point blank" 100% damage bonus range.

Charge isn't a direct damage power, the secondary function is mild CC with stagger.  Then shotgun to the face.  Add in Inferno ammo for CC/Panic/Damage.

That said there are a couple different things you can do to inflict more damage with charge.  Lift a target first with Pull, then use Charge and they will end up taking a force bonus and double damage since they are ragdolled.  Or you can try to freeze targets first for bonus force.

All in all I prefer that ME2 requires a balance between weapon and power use on the combat-biotic hybrid as opposed to the ME3 method of chaining a couple biotic powers together over and over.

I played insanity in ME2 with a vanguard class. It was difficult, I really needed to learn to shoot.
