There have always been those who go out of their way to feel offended, for the wildest reasons. On the other hand, there's just as many people who relentlessly insult others and bring up the "You're too soft, man up!" card as an excuse for every word that comes out of their mouth.

Extremes are for the most part negative, regardless of what side of the spectrum they're on.

The real mind bender is it was a high European court that deemed obesity as a disability. They beat Murica to it.

Yeah, I mean it's clearly an illness that makes them drink four liters of soda every day.

@FrogDog Maybe I'm proving a point here, but the word "tolerance" has been taken out of context. You "tolerate" bad weather, you treat everyone with acceptance and respect.

No, you tolerate differences of opinion and world views while working towards a better society. And you accept that some things, such as the weather, are out of your control.

Not everyone who is obese drinks soda. Sometimes it can be a thyroid disorder.

Plus I think empathy has become so important in Western society that it's unhealthy.

Sony did NOT pull this film because there were genuinely concerned for ANYONE'S safety nor did they pull it because there were afraid of another cyber attack.

In TRUTH this was a decision made by corporate legal because they were pushing the panic button. They are scared to death that if something did happen they would get sued. It was a decision made of greed...a fear of losing money. NOTHING to do with being concerned for our safety or welfare.

Give me a break.

Empathy is vital. How else are you supposed to understand another's view? To tolerate is fine, but you are siding with ignorance instead of comprehension. Alternatively, you can empathise, disagree, yet tolerate. However, empathy shouldn't be seen as "unhealthy" what's unhealthy is pretending to understand something you clearly don't.

P.S

Using empathy as if it were synonymous to Verstehen. If that's right or wrong, no idea, but there you go just so you know.

And not pointing this as an attack on your frogs and recon, just disagree that empathy is a bad thing.

What about the major movie theatre companies like AMC's reluctance to show the film on top of Paramount opting out of showing Team America?

Within reason. Empathy that compels you to help somebody or donate to a charity is a good thing.

Empathy that causes you to cave anytime somebody complains because they feel uncomfortable or offended is not. A society that conforms to individuals will crumble eventually.

This. Reason and logic are just as important as empathy. Maybe even more so.

Same thing. Everyone is scared to death of liability issues if something did happen.  One incident in one cinema could cost hundreds of million of dollars. And before you say that they would be covered by insurance polices....no...most insurance policies do not cover acts of war or terrorism, therefore Sony, Paramount and what ever cinema chain would be solely liable.

You seem to confuse empathy as an irrational thing. When you empathise you understand, you do not necessarily have to become an idealistic front for that person/s. Being rational is part of a healthy balance when exploring new things, it should always come with the package.

How much do you need to understand a person's views or beliefs before you're allowed to resonably reject them?

So Sweden?

Sweden Yes

It seems like every day someone gets offended by something, calling for bans. Or that we're warned about this and that, or given false impressions by the media.

Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if someone calls for banning bicycles, cause you can fall and scratch your knee or some bullshit.

You can't mock fat people either anymore, or just use the word fat, or you'll be labelled as a fatshamer. Say retard, and you're an ableist or whatever bullshit word they come up with.

Thank God, most of this crap is online only, but I'm also slowly seeing it creep in to real life situation, hell someone got offended when I used the phrase "man up"

What the hell happened?

I'm glad you asked! I don't know you at all, but I would guess that you've been busy acting like an *******. People then - respond - to you acting like an ******* by treating you like one.

Why do you hang out with said losers? If people bother you about whatever it is they do, don't hang around them as much as possible or mention that their being bothered is bothering you.

Cut the fat out of your life.

Simply that. You don't need to understand and agree. Like I said, empathise, yet tolerate. To simply tolerate is to reject an ideology without comprehension, right? Even if it's within reason, of course, you still don't understand what exactly makes that group "tick." It's really just a matter of "live and let live." Which is a fine way to go through life, methinks, more people who don't want to understand should at least tolerate. However, alternatively, how long can you tolerate something without somebody despising the very thing you once saw as nothing but something you disagreed with?

First world feminism right here.

A person accomplishes amazing things and people scream and cry about a T-shirt.

"When a wise man points at the Moon, the imbecile examines the finger."

Sums up the whole situation.
