I poked around and saw no clear indicator of such a topic, though I'm sure it's been discussed. I'm curious about the people who are currently hard at work on the next Mass Effect game.

This blog http://blog.bioware....xt-mass-effect/introduced some new faces alongside the names we know. Do we know more? The names of those who have left or aren't working on the game is a who's who of the franchise (Casey Hudson gone, Patrick Weekes worked on DAI, Drew Karpyshyn long gone, etc...).

There's so much talk about "getting a fresh start" and "telling new stories" that I wonder who is going to care about the state of post-Hegemony Batarian politics (just one possible example)? Who are the men and women who are as invested in the lore as much as we fans are? I want new stories, but I don't want a clean slate. I want more of the same galaxy in which I've played, at least in terms of depth and lore.

Do we have enough info to speculate about this? (How I hate that word in connection with this series! ;) ) I know Mac and Gamble are still around, but who are the writers that are providing continuity from the first trilogy into the new game? I know the community will be more familiar with their identities than I.

We won't know until sometime next year I think. We can probably assume Ann Lemay is one of the writers since she's part of the Montreal team and she was one of two writers on the Omega DLC made by Montreal, plus she was in that Bioware Base video of the Montreal studio tour too.

As for Weekes, Sylvia, Chris Hepler, Jay Watamaniuk and the rest of them we simply won't know until they officially reveal it somehow.

I know even Lukas Kristjanson who was Lead on Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 and wrote Sera for Inquisition, worked on ME2 so even he might be on MENext, but again, nothing's been said yet.

All we can assume is that if there will be single player DLCs for Inquisition chances are that Patrick Weekes might have to stay for a while, but otherwise it would be logical for him to jump over and work on NextME or the new IP since the next Dragon Age won't be looking for senior writers in at least half a year's time (which I've heard is how long it takes for the Lead Writer to work out the overarching plot with Creative Director typically)

So there isn't really much info yet? Makes sense.

I'm confident these guys can make a good game. I'm sure the final product will be beautiful to see and fun as hell, mechanically speaking. If I have any concerns though, however subdued, it's regarding the continuity and depth of lore. That's what gets me heavily invested in these series. I don't want lore neglected or rewritten in their effort to make a fresh start.

I'm not a fan of DAI, and may be off the DA bandwagon, in terms of buying the games themselves. When I make a mental list of the game's positives, though, they are all character and lore related moments and revelations. Mass Effect has the advantage of far, far superior gameplay and visuals, in my opinion, and a setting better suited to open-world gaming. I just hope they are able to bring top-notch characterization and lore to the table, as well.

We will see, eventually. It's still a long way off, whatever the final product ends up being.

Continuity of lore is something I'm not expecting much from because of Mass Effect 3 already largely butchering the lore and had a poor use of previously established characters like Legion, Udina, Samara, the list goes on. ME4 will hopefully be a reboot or somehow it miraculously subverts the ending of ME3 in an acceptable and digestible way.

I hope ME4 is gonna be like ME1 in the sense that previous choices are not taken into account. It's a new beginning that has the liberty of making up whatever hell the story it wants to without having to account for previous choices, making the number of variables and choices available in that game more significant. Hopefully it will also be self-contained enough that bold things happens in its story arc that Bioware won't need to resolve in a sequel.

I'm quite excited about what they're doing with the hero and I hope we'll get a great antaonist and some memorable squadmates too.

Next ME won't be a reboot since the franchise has only been out for seven years and it wouldn't make much of a profit since the trilogy has just finished. Bioware also gonna have to do acknowledge the endings, they can't ignore them or dodge them.

I honestly don't care if the game references or acknowledges any of my choices in the previous trilogy. I expect it will in minor ways, and I might smile when it does. I'm more concerned about LORE.

Some of us read all of those codex entries. We have learned a fair bit about the histories of the different civilizations, the way technology has developed, the biology of some species... all those little things that bring depth to an otherwise commonplace game world.

My main concern, with so many new faces, is whether they will have the familiarity and fondness for this lore that I hope to see reflected in any Mass Effect game. I fully expect new lore to be added, but I hope it is great, additional lore, and not silly, accidental retcons. I likewise want this new lore to build upon what came before, not ignoring it completely because it's too much trouble to consider and include.

I don't really have a great, substantiated concern for this happening. It's just something I consider with all these new faces at the helm. I hope this new game is a continuation of the galaxy we've come to know, and not a space game with some of the tech and trappings of Mass Effect. I really hope for a lot of time in previously unknown regions of the Milky Way, meeting completely alien societies with their own divergent applications of Mass Effect technologies; but I want the known parts of the galaxy to be just that-- the same places and societies that I now know so well.

Well, they said that now that they have completed DAI, a good part of the team will shift towards ME Next development, so it's quite possible we might get Patrick Weekes and some other familiar faces back. Yanick Roy, who is the executive producer on the game, worked with Casey Hudson from the first Mass Effect until the end of the trilogy, so in terms of overall vision, I'm sure he has a good idea of what Mass Effect game is all about  :)

I've watched the N7 Day video, and dug through partial transcripts of Comic Con (I think?). The new guys all sounded like big fans of the earlier games, and probably as big of lore nerds as many of us, so I'm feeling hopeful. As long as they do a better job of combining open-world with story than did DAI, I think we'll get a great game.

Isn't Mac Walters the lead writer ? I think he has a really important place this time again. And I don't mind it Mac is a good writer I loved Cerberus.

Mac is now Creative Director, I believe. I'm choosing to believe that is a good thing. No one can argue his familiarity, nor that he wrote some really good content. Some of his other stuff, though...

He honestly sounded completely burnt out and soured on the setting by the end. I was a bit surprised he didn't move to another BioWare project. Hopefully his renewed passion and love for Mass Effect is legit. He's difficult to read, and I don't know the guy, so I will choose to take him at his word.

Check out the Mass Effect Twitter thread (the actual messages, not the fan speculation), and you'll see a range of folks working on MEWhatever. Also filter by BioWare employees, because a number of them have posted there.

I'm pretty ignorant in regard to Twitter and most social media. It's a conscious choice on my part. I'll give it a look, though. I'm not sure how much longer I can choose to ignore it, anyway. It seems to be the preferred communication method of many companies, BioWare being an extreme example in the days leading up to ME3.

^It's great that they are big fans, but then there's the bigger concern that they will start writing something that resembles fanfiction.

Maybe Mac did a mistake with the ending but we can't forget all the good stuff and work he did on ME2 and ME3 (don't know if he worked on ME1). ME4 definitely needs him because he knows this universe very well and I m sure he has a lot of good new stories for us.

Well wasn't all the stuff with Tali (and maybe Garrus) in ME2 and ME3 already fanfiction ? Kind of.

Haha. Exactly! A major gripe of mine in regard to Mass Effect 3.
