Being tactical is useful, they're just a PITA without the tactical orders...

I forced myself, wandering through some areas, to use the tactical camera for every fight for a while.

It slows down the game considerably, but it also made me near unstoppable. If I had the time and patience to play this way, I'm pretty sure I'd play on nightmare. It made a massive difference. Point being: I've heard it said tactical combat is "pointless" in this version of DA... it isn't, it's very useful. Approaching a fight with a plan and making intelligent decisions for each of your party members is far more effective than willy-nilly wading into combat.

Here's the problem: Having to micromanage every move. Turn off AI and only move time forward a few seconds at a time at most. Monitor the movements of every enemy, and make every individual decision. With a modicum of competence, you'll tear through opponents significantly higher level than you on normal.

In DA:O, I didn't need to control everything. I had a powerful system through which I could give what are basically standing orders, and I primarily worried about positioning... not power use, not worrying about AoE, I could concentrate on moving my pieces while my pieces made reasonable decisions on when and where to use spells, potions, powers, etc.. because I programmed to make those decision on their own. I did override them often, as no if-than check can account for every scenario, but being tactical didn't bog down the game to this ridiculous an extent.

Bioware, you didn't open up tactical combat to a greater number of players by simplifying the tactics system. Players that don't wanna think about tactics aren't going to bother either way. You only handcuffed those of us who do want to be tactical by making doing so tedious for us.

Also, the camera's too close. But that's well established:P

Disclaimer: Yes, I love the game, yes it's fantastic, yes I've put in triple digit hours and I plan to continue playing it... I think I'm making reasonable constructive criticism here, not just whining.

It's been said a thousand-times and I hope people keep saying it until the folks at Bioware get it...

The over-simplification of the "tactics" menu combined with having to enter a separate camera/mode to issue commands are the main reasons that I prefer the combat of the previous two games.

It would alleviate a lot of frustration if we could "program" our companions as well as issue commands outside of tac-cam.

Why Inquisition did not get majority of GOTY? Because its not that great in my opinion. Sure you have vast huge & beautiful world. Its really gorgeous. And I'm enjoying every scenery. Its really breath-taking.

Major letdown to me is the combat. My senses tells me that tactical was added in last minute. This game is again made to cater to "Press a button & something awesome happens" crowd.

Look at the limited number of skills. I'm really disappointed with the skilltrees. And what are those skill that allow you to immediately evade/dodge an attack? Those skill are useless tactical skills.

Its only useful when you are playing 1 character and actively controlling it. Look if I want to play Dark Souls I'll play Dark Souls.

Ever see Dark Souls 3 out of a sudden a 3rd person action game turned to a real-time strategy game where you control multiple characters & not just one.

You get the idea. BioWare wants to make Dragon Age to a single player 3rd person view game like Skyrim rather than a party based combat game.

That's a huge letdown for me. And not to mention the paper cut board NPCs. That's why Gamespot chose Divinity Original Sins as PC GOTY for 2014.

So what Dragon Age Inquisition should get is CONSOLE GOTY 2014. Congratulations BioWare
An originally PC game now become CONSOLE GOTY. Thank you BioWare

Considering the far from awesome sales of DA 2 you'd think that Bioware would have realisee that this particular demographic either does not exist or is not interested one bit in Bioware games to start with.

Nope, because people who are interested in Bioware games expect Bioware's top notch work whatever the platform they game on.

.

I doubt the guys who make those decisions are the kind that admit to having made a mistake. DAI is still very hard trying to please everybody, with even more brawler-like actiony combat but still controlling (or rather trying to) a party plus big areas because Skyrim was a success plus etc. Seen from outside it still seems they miss actual gaming demographics, I doubt a Skyrim fan is going to get DAI for the opener world, is probably just waiting for ESVI.

Too much use of passives in the skill trees and many skills removed and replaced with passives count for a lack of tactical options anyway.

Problem is that only seems to be enable for console-based players, i.e., those who play with a controller and not the K/M.  :(

I never had the option to advance time and watch the battle play out in slow motion until I (temporarily) switched over to a controller rather than my keyboard and mouse.  When I switched back to my K/M, the option was gone again.

I am enjoying the game, but I do miss "programming" my characters with tactics. That was where a lot of the fun was, for me. Now I'm trying to figure out how to get Cassandra to protect my Inquisitor without just standing there while baddies are hacking away at everybody but me. Doesn't appear to be a way.

I'm slowly warming up to tac cam.

The tactics system is a mess and I really hope they work on it for DA4.

The combat itself is very rewarding to play tactically.

I agree with the OP.

I found this out last night when I came across my first dragon.. I got my ass handed to me since my entire party just runs into the dragon and attacks it from 10 feet away..

Really? I mean up until now I've completely ignored the Tac system for obvious reasons, but it seems that in certain areas its needed to get past tougher fights..

I really hope that they make some changes to this.. If they don't I honestly could only see myself playing through this game once before I abandon it entirely, which is really lame since there is enough in the gameworld, dialogue and side quests to spur me to play through as a different class..

Tactics, AI, and TacCam are currently a mess. Tactics allowed us to offset the (serious) flaws in the AI with our own custom commands in the previous game, and use TacCam to micromanage when things got too complicated. Now, with the AI being noticeably worse, the Tactics options far more limited, and the TacCam annoying to use, we are forced to handhold far more. DAI seems to be trying to be all action and all tactics at the same time, but it ends up doing neither particularly well. They need to either really improve the companion AI (especially in regard to staying at range and getting out of fire), or restore the full tactics suite and TacCam if they can't, because at the moment combat is just an unenjoyable mess, IMO.

I want the old tactical menu back.

So like, If there are >3 baddies next to Blackwall then activate War Cry.

It's pretty stupid that they did not add the old tactics menu in.

I found that I could easily faceroll the dragon fights provoxec the levels were close. What builds are you using? Have you been crafting gear? Are you playing on normal or casual?

Hmm might try that one next.

Yes well once you craft tier 3 armor you have god mode even on nightmare, but that's a totally different complaint which I won't go into here ;)

It does seem like they made the game difficulty very easy so the action crowd could win on higher difficulty levels. But you're right, it means we micromanagers who play in tactical mode can completely steamroll content.
