Hello all, I'm new to the Dragon Age scene, and decided to pick this game up. Loving it, however I seem to be stuck. I'm in The Vault of Valammar, and I don't have a Rogue in my party, and have only one save file. I've been looking for a key to open the door and get my second cog wheel, but can't find one.

I wouldn't think they would let me start a quest I have no possible way of completing without a certain member in my party, so curious what am I missing here? Any information is great, thank you!

Not sure if I can port out mid quest, and change my party but haven't found it yet, and couldn't leave the area back into the Hinterlands to change, so a little concerned. Also, running on PC (if that helps anything.

Thanks!

*EDIT* Was able to leave area, change party members and re start the whole quest over. For the future, is this normal? I rather not keep repeating quests. Is it best to always keep the Rogue in the party? Would think it should warn you, can't finish mission unless "x" class is with.

General rules of thumb with RPGs are:

1. Always have and protect the healer. (Whoever has Revival/Resurgence in this case.)

2. Always have a Rouge.

Not ALL quests require a Rouge, but they can make progression easier. I always have Varric and/or Cole. (Make him a good set of daggers and Cole becomes a BEAST!)

Sera is also a rogue... And a Rogue is standard party faire in RPG's as said by Crimson but it's even more so true it seems like in DA games.  They like to put locked things all over the place that you miss without a rogue. Though this seems to be a fair bit less in DA:I surprisingly.

You don't need a rogue. Use a warriors shield bash or that one two handed move at the top of the tier that buries people. You can knock the locked doors open. Only ones that can't are the ones that need the fine tools and deft hands. But those are never used to block missions as far as I know unless it's getting certain artifacts. Like for blackwall? But even then I don't recall one.

I mostly run 2 warriors and two mages. One support and one battle mage. I only play a mage as a front line attacker.

All 3 classes have obstacles that only they can bypass. Warrior: smashable wall; rogue: locked door; mage: elemental barrier. So if you want to be sure, always have one of each class in your party.

Not so. If the door doesn't need fine tools and deft hands, just mighty blow it open with a two handed Warrior.

The rogues are usually the best characters in the game anyway. Why would you go with out? Also seconding what someone said above. Cole and a good pair of daggers makes for an awesome party member.

As for your other question- one of Blackwall's quests requires both a rogue and the deft hands, fine tools perk (memories of the grey, artifact in fallow mire). (Unless I've totally missed where the artifact is and it isn't behind that door).

There are also likely mosaic pieces hidden behind locked doors. Nothing considered necessary, main story content should absolutely require a rogue though.
