*edit* Also my copy was downloaded from D2D. Are these issues happening for anyone with the actual disks?

found a solution, go to the binaries like before, find the file that should be called eacoreserver open that up, it might be blocked by your firewall or at least it was for me. After i unblocked it the game started. Good luck
I don't have said file

Are there any official posts from Bioware on this issue yet? I've tried reinstalling, checking for adobe air, making sure all directories point in the right direction, the cmd trick and nothing has worked. Is this a Vista/Windows 7 issue?

I'm d2d as well, this is the first time i've ever had issues with anything from them.

1. Download adobe air and install it as "Run as Administrator"
Link: http://get.adobe.com/air/
2. Make sure all AV and Firewalls are off (not sure if this made a difference in reality though)
3. When you install the game do the "Run as administrator" thing.
4. Run the Mass Effect 2 icon "as Administrator"
5. Run a Configure and make sure to save it. Go to "Mass Effect 2" -> Save Settings
6. Cross you fingers, dance a little jig, pray to whatever diety you pray to and then try playing the game.
I'm using windows 7, and got my copy from D2D.
I had tried reinstalling the game numerous times, normally and "as administror" to no avail.
One thing I did notice during my installs was that shorty after the install was done Adobe Air was asking to be update, and this being a fresh install of Win 7 I know I hadn't installed that yet.

Mass Effect 2: Misconfiguration/Hung Activation Fix
By Zoomba Posted January 26, 2010 3:36:34 PM
Shortly after the launch of Mass Effect 2 today, a small number of users began reporting a misconfiguration issue that prevented them from running the game, or having the activation step appear to hang. We've identified the issue and have a fix detailed below. It's important to note that anyone who downloaded the game for the first time after 10am Eastern on 1/26 will not encounter these issues.
If for some reason you're getting the misconfiguration error, or the activation process is just hanging, please download this file and run it:
http://stardock.cach...2_misconfig.exe
This will attempt to repair the EAAccess tools (activation) which should solve both of those problems.
If you do not have Adobe Air installed, this will attempt to install it as well. Give the installer roughly 5min to run (it runs the installer silently, you may want to keep an eye on the task manager and wait for EAAccessInstaller to quit).
Please let me know if this does or does not fix your issue.

I can't believe this is still a problem considering the fiasco with Dragon Age. Unbelievable.

Took 30 minutes to get to 2nd tier support...
Worked with tier 2 for 1.5 hours everything from reinstalling .net framework to redoing everything under fresh (admin) user account.
now I await a call from 3rd tier tomorrow sometime......

Ugh, I was hoping you would have better news then that. I've tried contacting Direct2Drive to see if they have a clue but it seems you can only do so via email.

1a - Download EAs Download Manager. If you have problems with it like I did (got error: application tried launch but ea can go drown in a river...) read this post here: http://forum.ea.com/...43.page#3556186
1b - If you get the EADM error follow steps A, B, and C (if not, skip to D)
A - Download "Namytemms" rar file from the above linked thread.
B - Go to C:\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\Program Files (x86)\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\Electronic Arts and delete or move your current EAdownloadmanager folder (move it just incase)
C - Unzip your new EAdownloadmanager into the Electronic Arts folder.
D - Double click the EA Download Manager program. Once in the EADM click on the Activate tab, enter your ME2 activation code (may require sign in).
Viola, the game will appear in your Games list and you'll be able to run the game. All of this may require a C:\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ install of the game (I installed it on 2 different hard drives during this EIGHT FCKING HOUR TROUBLESHOOTING MARATHON) so i'm not sure if alternate drive installs are supported with this fix.
Once you have activated the game you no longer need the EADM to start it, and I have verified that alternate drive installs will still play just fine once the game has been initially "activated".
I really hope this helps others.
