Hello.

So, I think this question doesn't need any more explanation really, I just want to know what games you think have a kind of Anime or JRPG type of influence in them but are nonetheless made by western game companies.

I'm asking because I really don't believe that there just aren't people who aren't Japanese but also like their style of characters and world creations, etc. Consequently, I am interested in hearing if people have come across them in any format, including the smallest forms like a mobile game or something like that. However, naturally I'm curious only if they aren't from Japan in this instance, because well it's pretty easy to find them if I include Japan.

Historically I feel like this included Bioware (ME1/DA:O era was the last part of that..), Obsidian, Blizzard (when it was more Warhammery), and some others.. kind of... However, they kinda feel to me like they are moving towards western themes and ideas and away from a kind of sensibility these days, or at least it seems that way to me. Now they have a lot of fans but I'm curious to see if anyone is still trying to blend the different styles together..

Nowadays League of Legends has a kind of art style that reminds me of but it doesn't really extend beyond just the stylistic similarity as far as I can tell. CDPR in contrast doesn't mimic the style but has more characterization and narratives that make it appealing.

I guess another way of putting it would be what are the most friendly environments for JRPG type characters and games (if any). I'm not sure I'll find the same thing but I also don't know every game out there so if you want to chime in...

I doubt you're going to find many western developers taking inspiration from developers in Asia. The only western game I can think of that has a somewhat asian influence is Neverwinter Online, it was made by Cryptic Studios.

I'm going to disagree pretty strongly about DA:O and ME1. In fact, it's DA ][ that had the character that everyone loves to call anime (Fenris), and has what everyone loves to call "anime combat."

Outside of that, I haven't really come across anything.

ALTHOUGH, one thing I JUST came across is this

and it's got me so excited I could pee myself.

Idk but I can see this turning into a JRPG vs. WRPG thread. And I love pointless arguments...

Guild Wars is the best one I can think of really.

Maybe the Torchlight series is what you're looking for too, but I could be off.

What's your impression of FFXV, EA? 10/10, 2015 Game of the Year?

It's going to be 2016, not 2015. And while I'm insanely hyped right now, I can acknowledge that it may not scratch that itch for everybody...

...but I don't see how it can't! Look at that! Gorgeous, compelling story direction, expansive world and town exploration, both small and large scale battles (though the large scale will probably be setpieces).

Let me put it this way: I will buy a console just for this game if I must. If I must.

And about the topic, somebody mentioned Torchlight. Not a bad recommendation for vague JRPG "feels."

Edit: Without french

Get out. FREAKING NOCT

Dem hair physics.

Yup, Bioware and really the entirety of western developers should take some notes.

Ubi does cloth physics well (which is akin to hair physics) but outside of them it's pretty much the purview of the japanese developers like SE.

Neverwinter online seemed ok, I could probably try it eventually. Guild Wars.. I guess I can check it again.. but it seemed a little more Tolkein/generic on the whole but I don't know.. Borderlands 2 I played already, it's ok... though. I also actually own Torchlight without having played it... honestly forgot about it. Might be cool.

A (well, not that recent) example is something like NWN2. It was like you start in the town, then you move over to the next one, meet the funny drunken dwarf in the Tavern, go the next town, adventure, dungeon, have merry adventures, run into people, navigate weird relationships, have a Lute duel-off. Something that doesn't take itself so seriously.

Anyway not intended as a JRPG vs. WRPG because already been there, I just am trying to find games I'd be more interested in playing than the standard fare, especially now with bazillions of mobile games all over the place, handhelds, etc...

Origins and ME1 was about as standard-western as you can get, Tolkien-esque fantasy mixed with Song of Ice & Fire & Star Trek, Stargate, Dune with similar thematic elements such as Blade Runner, Kubrick's Space Odyssey, writings of Asimov,  Battlestar Galactica -- The only thing 'Japanese' which is derived any inspiration from there would be workings such as Ghost in the Shell "relates to whole synthethic debacle again" and 'aesthetically" that awful Final Fantasy film, which had about as much to do with Final Fantasy as non-extravagant hairstyles -- It more or less ended up being an awkward attempt at western sci-fi, because it looked like one but didn't exactly 'roll' like one. So to conclude: Not entirely sure what you're getting at there.

As for as some actual examples. Jade Empire & Heavenly Sword are both games that derive narrative thematic elements from asian/chinese myth and thus they are ideal to mention. In retrospect; All developers take inspiration from pretty much everywhere, so one could easily distinguish certain common traits in quite a few franchises.
