Hey guys, I was wondering if playing as a mage inquisitor adds anything to the story of inquisition that makes sense. The inquisition was an organization founded by those who would become templars. At the same time, I cannot see a mage as the "leader" of an entire army, that seems more fit to a warrior. Magic is greatly feared in Thedas, especially at the time that inquisition takes place with the whole mage templar war and the rift. I know that being a mage makes sense in terms of closing the breach, but I simply cannot picture a mage in an important position of leadership.

For those that have played a mage, does it make you feel more involved in the story? I'm not talking about the extra dialogue options as I know those don't really matter. I'm talking about how the story makes you feel when playing a mage. Thank you everyone for your time!

A lot. It probably has the most extra dialogue/content.

And human mage in particular makes you feel like 'the chosen one' more than any other background. As if your being a mage and in that position of power is for a greater purpose.

As a Human Mage, you're basically both a Nobleman and a Mage which is two things Sera hates. However, people thinking of you as a Mage helps solidify the fact that your Chosen Status as the Herald is a threat to the Chantry.

A Mage Chosen One is something they can't reconcile.

But the people are actually pretty quick to get behind.

It also makes Corypheus more interesting as an antagonist.

I like the Old Magic vs New Magic in battle over the soul of Thedas theme. He has his dragon; you have yours. He has Calpernia; you have Morrigan.

You become his Dark (or bright in this case) Mirror in one of the unusual role reversals.

Doubly so if you're Andastrian.

The man who needs God to be literal and the man who embodies faith despite absence.

Kind of ironic when you think about it. Corypheus enabled everything he stood against to come to pass simply by challenging the Inquisitor. He very much created the Inquisitor in the way that the 'villain creates the hero'.

It also shows their basic difference.

The Inquisitor fights with his friends.

Corypheus fights with his slaves.

And the Inquisitor trashes him.

Being a mage impacts how the story comes across greatly, as well as giving quite a few extra options here and there.

I like how the story comes across if you play a mage: Corpyheus embodies the threat of free, unrestricted magic, while the mage Inquisitor who has freed the mages embodies its promise. The lnquisitor wins.

try being an elf mage. i'm loving this twist to Thedas prejudice. Making their sole leader, a symbol of hope... a Dalish elf mage that's never spent a day in a circle.

Siding with and disbanding the Templars as a mage is much more fulfilling tbh.

I've just finished a Dalish Inquisitor's story. It may be the most interesting character to play, not only because of what you mentioned, but also because of the revelations about elven history. Add points if you romanced Solas. I don't think you can make another Inquisitor for whom this story is by default so personally meaningful.

@TheDarkKnightReturns:

Except that so many mages are lost. That takes away most of the satisfaction.

Could easily justify siding with the Templars as means to freeing the rebel mages from Fiona's idiotic clutches. Redcliffe is supposedly unbreachable, even by Orlesian standards and the Inquisition are little better than upstarts before brokering an alliance with either side. But then **** happens...

Dalish suck.

I only liked them in DAO... when I didn't realize how much they sucked. I was so innocent then.  B)

LOL.

But yeah being a mage, human/Qunari/Dalish, gives a different feeling whilst playing the game. Plus, I like the gameplay this time around. Has more cool effects and spells.

Mages can be Knight Enchanters.

Obviously this makes them the Maker's own chosen class for DAI.

Only Knight Enchanters though, Fiona and her lot are still utterly pathetic.

It does impact, yeah. But I didn't find it fun to be honest. I much preferred my Dalish archer, than my Qunari mage. It somehow felt more objective and not biased, especially when making some serious decisions.

I'm playing a human Mage now and while I find that playing a Mage does seem to fit the story I wouldn't say that there are that many major differences. There are some different dialogue choices where it's brought up or where you can ask people how they feel about being a Mage which is cool.

Playing a Mage is very fun though, and especially as a rift Mage I feel like it's a very story appropriate class.

The Dalish story seems to fit nicely as well.

I think being a Dwarf is interesting simply because of Cadash's background as a carta member. I like the racially unique dialogue options.

I'm currently doing a runthrough as a dwarven warrior, and Solas commented on my training as a warrior in a bit of dialogue, but there hasn't been anywhere near as much warrior related dialogue as there is mage related dialogue. I was kind of hoping for more.

But yes, being a mage, even if an illusion, does give the perception of impacting the world and those in it because it's very well done.

Ah but one can't discount the effect of playing as a Warrior or Rogue. Corypheus will even address your PC as "soporati", a lower, non-magical Tevinter social class.

He represents the old age where mages ruled, the Inquisition represents the new age where non-mages do. It becomes a contest between the past and the present to see who will win the future and inherit the earth.

By defeating him, the Inquisitor proves times have changed and non-mages will never be slaves again.

If they're Andrastrian, you're kind of walking in her footsteps too.
