Hello to all. I'm quite new here. I love this game and I'm running it on nightmare (15 lvl now), and I'm planning to try soloing it as a mage on nightmare after I finish it. I know about the guy who soloed it as an archer on nightmare a while ago. I wonder, does anyone play as a mage on nightmare? Is it possible to fight the bosses/dragons without a tank? Any ideas about the optimal solo mage build would be very welcome.

P.S.: Matth85, I know you're reading this, mate, so your suggestions are most appreciated...  ;)

Aha.. yeah... You are right. I am!

I haven't soloed it yet, as it is benched until I am tired of Far Cry 4! But my plan was to get:

Chain Lightning + Energy Barrage

Fade Step + Winter's stillness

Barrier + Guardian Spirit

Fire mine + Wall of fire + Clean Burn

Then I was considering going into Winter for Blizzard and Ice Armor. My specialization would be Rift Mage, as it gives a much needed mana regen, but also CC and 30% less damage from enemies.

Though if you check the other thread I made, regarding mage theorycrafting and stuff, it's where I did my planning for a Mage solo run and where I got some excellent suggestions. Check it out! http://forum.bioware...est-mage-build/

Congrats me. I've just did Ferelden Frosty on nightmare using your advices (lvl 14 party). The more I play - the more I'm sure: if you're to beat this game (i.e. high dragons) on nightmare - you have to be properly equipped. What I really love about this game is crafting. Not many RPG games like this can offer you such variety in armor/weapon crafting...

P.S.: Going further... Whrere is damned Storm Coast Dragon? I swear I hear his screaming...

You are, indeed, correct. As long as you keep a decent balanced team build, gear > everything. As you reach Tier 3 the game pretty much breaks. The scaling is exponential, and at that point the game stops beeing a problem. Like the guy killing High Dragons solo on Nightmare in 3 seconds to 12 seconds.

The Storm Coast High Dragon is found later on in the game, once the red templar dungeon opens up. Shes level 19 I believe.

Yeah gear let's you murder anything at any difficulty. The only challenge to Nightmare is actually getting to skyhold and into tier 2/3 equipment. Those lower levels are mind numbing. I plan to do my next nightmare run as a rift mage and the above talent selection is similar to what I am planning. One of my few issues with this game is the mundane buildup to skyhold, it can get a little tedious on subsequent playthroughs.

I have been duo'ing on nightmare for a while and im just doing everything now before i finish the game again here are my thoughts.

You will need multiple staffs, possibly one of each type and they will need to be quality. You cant afford to come up against a foe who is resistant to your damage.

One of the hardest fights i have had so far is against ishmael as he changes form one is immune to fire damage the other lightning makes it really hard if you have a fire damage staff equipped.

The hardest foes are immune to fire it becomes just a battle of attrition, as most of our high damage spells are from the fire tree and on the opposite end the easiest are the one vulnerable to fire.

When the rift tree opens up i would take upgraded veilstrike and mana regen and the damage reduction i wouldnt get it all( at least straight away anyway)

Offensive is the best defense in alot of situations, you cant just absorb all the damage you take it will leak through your defences, the quicker you can take out opponents the easier it will be.

Frost is really lack luster damage wise.

I dont think awesome gear is as useful for us as it is for other classes, especially rogues.

Im sorry im tired ill post more if that helps and what i have said makes sense.

Yes and no. Awesome gear is as useful for us as it is for everybody but rogues. Our biggest issue is mana regen, as willpower does nothing (Who the F*** figured that would be a good idea?!.

However, good gear still fits good. We don't get the benefit of flanking, but we get the benefit of CC/Crit Damage/CD reduction/Attack.

The biggest issue with mages are, indeed, elements. It can be painful in the long run. You really need to run with at least 2 elemental staves and plan ahead. Thankfully Energy Barrage uses the staff element, otherwise we'd be fucked!

I do with they would allow us to have Physical Staves, or make runes change the element of the staff. That would solve that issue.  Alas, we can't have everything I guess!

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'm sorry if I put it wrong: I really looking for a proof if the game can be beaten on nightmare as an "old-school" solo elementalist mage? Without Skyhold specializatons? IMO, they are either overpowered, or bugged... Anyway, they kinda ruin the late-game fun.

Or it's impossible to nightmare solo high dragons using only 4 base schools of magic?

P.S.: I definitely remember DA 2 could be done solo as bloodmage/elementalist on nightmare... So...

It can be soloed, of course. Specializations are not game changing for the most part. Necromancer and Rift mage doesn't change where your damage come from -- they just add elements to it. Rift Mage gives weakness and insane mana regen. Necromancer gives.. well.. stuff.

And High Dragons are not a problem to solo. You can A) Stack elemental resistances, so the fire balls deal no damage. Then just stay at range. or B ) Bounce around at the dragons side avoiding damage with Fade Step and Barrier.

The only variable in a fight is if you can deal with adds and if you can deal any damage. For non-fire dragons this is just a matter of using fire mine every chance you get, and it dies quick enough. For fire dragons it's a bit different. Static Cage + Energy Barrage might be enough to get you through those.

If you go for crafting and/or farming schematics early on (You can get tier 2 masterwork with tier 2 materials as early as level 3-4), then early mage is a breeze. Late game you just go to Lyon/Lion/Whatever and farm tier 3 stuff. Get some silverite and make some heavy armor, and you're good to go. You'll take next to no damage and deal good damage.

This game can be done solo, naked, on nightmare. It's just a question of how long you want it to take. Most damage is avoidable, and if it isn't you got many ways to CC and avoid damage.

O.K.. Thank you so very much. I expected something like this.

Matth, what are your ideas of supposedly late-game elementalist mage build (no specced) for solo-ing, using only 4 schools of magic?

P.S.: What I didn't like much about this game is how quickly you get XP. They say: "don't rush the game". O.K... I really decided to clear the first area properly to get the most of the game, not to miss a single quest. So when I cleared out Hinterlands I became lvl 10, and after Fellow Mire I don'tknowwhy went to Hissing Wastes (lvl 12) where I got tier 3 schematics (and lvl 16 while farming materials for them). Meanwhile on lvl 14 I brought down Fereldan Frosty and The Abyssal High Dragon on lvl 15. And I've just did Sandy Howler (I'm 16 & she's 20). So now I came to the situation I have only 3 regions properly walked through (all the quests), and I feel very boring to fight 11 lvl mobs/get t2 crap. "Don't rush the game" my arse! I soon will come to lvl cap and I have like 70% of the game world uexplored still! I even don't know who Sera is!
