Alot of people (including me) have been suffering from that rage-inducing glitch that severely reduces the amount of party banter in the game. I wasn't expecting it to affect my playthrough as much as it did. I can go through a Mass Effect game without party banter just fine but when it comes to Dragon Age, it's such a massive blow to my enjoyment of the game. I ended up rushing through the main storyline of my first playthrough after barely getting any banter for the first 40 hours and wasting many more hours trying to get party banter to work (never had any success). I didn't bother doing anymore side quests. I just rushed through the game as fast as I could and never touched it since. Its the first Bioware game where I actually don't want to do a second playthrough. Even ME3's original ending didn't upset me enough to dissuade me from doing multiple playthroughs.

I don't have much hope for a solution to this problem at this point. I just have one request Bioware. Please go back to the DAO/DA2 style banter system in the next game. Make it so that you can manually trigger banter by walking past a specific location/landmark on any map. I can handle bad endings and reused environment. Lack of party banter on the other hand is completely unacceptable. Just stick to the system you had earlier. It should still be fine even in an open world setting. just have it trigger every time we walk out of a camp or some other landmark...

I should also mention that I don't think Dragon Age Inquisition is a bad game. It actually is a great game. Its because the game is so good that I don't want to play it anymore if I am not getting the whole package. I know for sure that the banter in this game is excellent like the previous two games. Not being able to hear it REALLY prevents me from enjoying the rest of the game =/

Banter can be triggered by going past specific landmarks. Also, in DA:O it was randomly triggered (like DA:I) as far as I can remember. The bug sucks, but DA:I's way of handling banter is the best, imo (landmark specific triggers AND random triggers).

Actually, I think in DAO and DA2, it seemed to be triggered by location. For instance in DAO, the bridge in Orzammar that leads to the Provings always triggers it, and the path into the Dalish camp, entrance to the Circle tower, etc.

I'm not too thrilled with the banter in DA:I. It's not really as funny as the banter in DA:O and more about exploring the character's backstory and motivation... which should be done in direct conversation and not triggered randomly at the start of a fight.

Also, I've got the weird bug where Solas asks Varric about his fight vs. Corypheus every 5 minutes or so.

There is some really funny banter and interesting stuff. Origins did not have much.

I had the bug in my first play through and it was LONELY. In my second play through I have been very careful to only travel using the war table, and whenever I go to camp I rest and reload from the auto save. I don't know if it is helping but I do get at least one or two banters in an hour now whereas I had none before. When they do happen they typically occur right as I finish closing a rift, so that's annoying, but it's better than nothing.

Do I -really- have to quote some DA:O banter now? The interaction of Alistair with Morrigan... or Morrigan with Sten... or Sten with Leliana ... or Alistair with Wynne... those were all comedy gold. Not a single boring moment, all were funny. Intentionally funny I might add.

He said there's wasn't much banter, not that there wasn't much funny banter

And compared to DA:I, there's basically no banter at all in DA:O.

If you're missing out on funny banter, maybe you use different party setups. Sera, Iron Bull, Solas is pretty funny most of the time.

Oh I know the amusing banter from Origins. DA:I has about 4 hours worth of banter, not counting the advisors. A video from origins was just over 3 hours

All the games have amusing banter

So not everyone gets this glitch I take it? I find there is a reasonable amount of banter in my game? Not by everyone mind you - Cole not so much for example. Certain combo s of characters likely impact as well?

More isn't always better. I get banter fairly often and I tried several party combinations... it just isn't funny except for a rare gem here or there.

That doesn't mean it is bad... but Cassandra and Solas talking about Cassandra's disillusion with the Seekers and her outlook for the future would fit much better into a dialogue cutscene triggered in Skyhold than into banter.

Banter is defined as the playful and friendly exchange of teasing remarks. Not soul searching analysis of the faith of one companion or the bitter regrets of another.

If it isn't funny, it isn't banter. And there are not many funny conversations going on.

I'm playing Origins right now (for the 20th maybe 30th time, lost count, it's sooo good!!) and party banter triggers when I walk past specific locations, for instance the bridge in Lothering.

I think there is a lot of banter in Origins, the ones I love the most are with Morrigan, Alistair and "Dog" :P

I've resigned myself to the lack of banter and started watching it on youtube since I'll never get it in my game. Now I finally use a mount and it's just some chirping birds and the shrill bleating of the wild hart to keep me company :(

I know how you man. Its depressing as hell. Lol I'm avoiding the youtube videos because they'll make me even more depressed once I find out how awesome the banter is and how I never heard it in my own playthrough =/

I can say with 100% certainty that DAO's banter was NOT randomly triggered but what was actually triggered by walking through specific locations on the map (ie -bridges/taverns etc). Also, I wasn't aware that DAI had the landmark system as well. Do you know of any specific landmarks that trigger banter? Also, is it a one-time thing or can you keep triggering banter over and over like previous Dragon Age games?

They'll comment on an area one time.

They need to record more banter. The game is so large that we're going through areas multiple times and we've already triggered the banter for the area. So tons more banter needs to be recorded for the next game.

Nope. I ran through all the origins banter by going on the bridge at orzzamar, leaving the area, coming back to the bridge and doing it again. Once you leave and come back the talking point is up again.

Edit: Whoops missed the second part of what you were responding to, thought you were still talking about origins. Nevermind.

It seems random for me. One time I will get the conversations kicking in every quarter of an hour or so (like what Bioware said it should be doing). Other times nothing for hours (no music either).

Changing the party up doesn't make a difference, neither does using the war table to fast travel. Not very 'immersive'...

So yes, they should go back to the old system, or at least have more 'triggers' dotted about the landscape.

I'm still hopeful that they can tweak the existing system to fix the banter issues. I don't think we need to say "Definitely go back to the old way where you knew exactly where banter would fire" way yet. When DA:I banter works, it's a better system. It's just a hard issue to catch before release and some people have had issues, but they said they would tinker with banter to increase frequency in the next patch, and that might fix the problems.

The game has barely been out a month, and no one really talked about this issue until the 2nd week, so we're talking 3 weeks around the holidays, when they had other, more pressing issues (actual stability issues) to address first. Why are you giving up on a fix? (It's likely not really a "bug" based on what they've released in terms of a specific problem they can re-create as a bug, but rather the banter firing unevenly in different playthroughs for some reason - I have some theories as to why, but don't know for sure.) And it's a difficult thing to tweak and fix. I think they'll get a handle on this. Then, in the next game, they'll know the potential problems much more and thus won't have to "return" to an old system but will be able to implement a system of this type better.

Well hopefully you're right. I just don't wanna get my hopes up too high. Especially since this problem is turning out to be more complicated than Bioware originally thought. The best way to avoid disappointment is to expect nothing and take nothing for granted =/

It was kinda random for me too but for the most part, I didn't get much banter. In the beginning of the game, I got some banter between Cassandra/Solas/Varric the first time I entered the hinterlands. After finding mother Giselle and going back to Haven, I barely got any banter for the rest of the game. I know they wanted to spread out the banter throughout the game but I'm pretty sure that getting only around 5 conversations in 40 hours of play time is not what they had in mind.

I think they have a good amount of banter (though I wouldn't reject to getting more). They just need a better system for triggering that banter.

I love the way the backstories and especially relationships between people are built in the banter. That’s how you’d really hear it, not by running to interrogate people every few hours!

In fact, I wish far more of the dialogues were proactive.
