I'm not usually one to complain, but something that grates on me a little is the Eton-esque [public school for all the toffs] human male voices we are left to pick through.  I have no idea if foreigners pick up on the accent as much as someone from the UK would, but it would have been nice to have had a more common British accent at our disposal.

I'm not saying it should have been a heavy Yorkshire, Cockney, Celtic etc accent, just one that doesn't make your human male character sound like an over privileged, sliver spoon, overly educated public school boy.  It just comes across as your stereotypical "Anyone for tea and crumpets?" voice if that makes sense.

Literally the human biography is:

"As the youngest child of the Trevelyan noble house, you grew up in the Free Marcher city of Ostwick and have enjoyed a life of privilege. With close family ties to the Chantry, and many relatives among the priesthood and the templars, you were always expected to follow a similar path in service of the Maker."

So, I mean. Your human male character IS exactly what you said. :P

It all just sounds a bit silly.  Even male Hawke has the same issue as do some female elves.  Apart from a handful of npcs, all the characters that sport a British accent, all come across as being from a privileged background.   Blackwall's accent is the sort of, well, accent that would have been preferable.

I know what you mean. Even Sera's accent and language is wierd.....the cockney 'innit' mixed in with the northern accent, just doesnt make sense.

This is what you have to expect from US made games though. They just dont get it.

I don't mind it so much in DA:I (since the human female is a noble), but I would have preferred a more regional accent. Isn't the family further North than the Vaels? Surely we should have had a Scottish accent, which would have fit elf playthroughs better aswell.

Being from the UK myself, It is a little annoying having my PC sound like the toffee-nosed elite I roll my eyes at irl - everything she does sounds smug and snobbish :(.

Nah, most of the Free Marches are roughly spread east to west. Ostwick is only right above Ferelden.

I think there's at least 1 Scottish accent in the game and it's terrible.  It's over emphasised, but to be fair on BioWare, that's usually the case in most games that use the Scottish accent.  Being Scottish myself, I do sit and cringe when I hear the overly dramatic and forced "Och aye, the noo Jimmy" accent.

Well, the guy who plays Sebastian is Scottish. Alec Newman. Seen him on TV as well.

Being a Midlander, every Scottish accent I hear is 'perfect', but I bet if I heard a brummy accent I would cringe my way through... But I guess everyone else would aswell :x. I thought Seb's accent was dreamy ^^.

@Streetmagic Thanks for clearing it up, I guess Snoots Mcgee does fit, regionally :(.

I'd like to hear more Welsh (not exactly like Merrill... just love the accent in general).

It wasn't meant as a slight on the actor.  I think having to listen to my accent in most games is similar to hearing my own voice played back to me, especially when the Scottish accent isn't commonly used.  Even some Scottish made TV programmes sound ridiculous to me.  Maybe I'll never be completely happy listening to a Scottish accent in a game.  Some Scottish actors do over emphasise their accent and to us it doesn't sound natural.

On a little tangent here - i have no idea if you've heard of a film called 'Trainspotting, but I had no issue with that film because those accents used in the film are representative of how people actually do speak in certain parts of Edinburgh. Nothing felt forced.

I think it's due to Bioware not being in the UK. They already addressed how they wanted all elves with a Welsh accents but they ran out of Welsh people so they snuck some Irish/Scottish into it.

It wouldn't surprise me that they can't get hold of many distinct english accents in Canada.

Sorry, but having a 'posh' English accent makes a lot more sense than accents associated with working or lower class backgrounds, like an East London or Chav accent.

The most popular race choice by fair is always human, and all versions of the human characters (warrior, rogue, and mage) are educated people from the upper crust of a quasi-medieval society. The accent fits with their background. Having Inquisitors with those backgrounds sound working class or uneducated would be more jarring than having a dwarf or Dalish elf with the posh English accent. And for non-humans, there is an American voice actor choice that doesn't come associated with any connection to social class.

I'll agree with the OP if the next human protagonist was born in a Denerim slum or a small pig farm outside of Redcliffe.

Haha well, Tevinter people apparently also have posh British accents, despite being on the far opposite end of the continent from Ferelden.

Bizarrely in Thedas, accents start British in Ferelden, transform into American and Scottish in the Free Marches, and then morph back into British in Tevinter. Magic.

I'm glad they sound like that. I lived in the east midlands for 1 month and the language there was unintelligible.

That wasn't my point at all.  I actually insinuated that it shouldn't be a heavy Northern/Celtic/chav accent.  You make it sound as if accents have to be either or.  As things stand, most (not all) of the British human accents have a heavy public school boy/girl vibe about them.  Britain or more to the point, the UK actually has the most diverse English accents in the world.  Areas with a mere 5 miles between them can and do have completely different accents, so it's not as if the choice is limited.

I have no idea about the other races other than the female elven race (i messed around with the voice in the CC) and they too have the same posh English accent choice.  Same holds true for both male and female Hawke.  It's all very "Tea and crumpets at noon, Jeeves"

I like the voice acting for the English accent both genders.  However, the American accent for males is wrong.  It's too deep, and it only really fits the qunari.  Even a dwarf seems a bit off with that accent.

Are you American?  If so, it's probably the same as me not liking the in-game Brit accent.  The American accents sound fine to me, however, because they're not similar to my own accent I think that's why I have no issue with them.

The EU female voice actor for elf isn't really good, she putted me off the moment when we saw the divine held captive.

She casually said : what's going on here ?

Not even a bit suprised!
