OP, when I first started DA3MP, I failed probably over 90% of my first 50 missions. That's just the way it goes unless you have teammates that are carrying for you, and you just have to keep on grinding routine until you get good equipment. The main reason why you will keep on losing is just loot. A starter weapon does ~15-20% of the damage of a level 20+ unique after factoring in enemy armor rating. It takes one or two swings to kill a routine mob with a high level weapon and it may take 5-15 swings to kill the same mob with a low level weapon. Having high armor rating armor helps a lot too, especially in routine, since it is a flat damage reduction. As well as if you were to find a 5% or 10% heal on kill ring, but they may be very very rare so don't get your hopes up on that.
As for strategies, I agree with prior poster who suggested keeper. But what I'd suggest is beeline for upgraded barrier (4 second faster cooldown) and knight protector passive, and then go for upgraded chain lightning and cooldown reduction passives. Learn to just spam spam spam spam spam barrier while you stand near teammates, and master this because a good keeper in threatening/perilous can make even these higher difficulties seem easy as heck. It doesn't matter as much if it takes your team a very long time to kill all the enemies if you are able to keep yourself and 2-3 other teammates safe by spamming barrier.
And finally, don't worry about failing. The xp and gold reward from the fifth and final stage SUCKS. I have been in farm teams where we just commit suicide after completing 4th stage because we didn't want to deal with killing the boss for about the same amount of gold as you get from a chest room and maybe a few more vases. Routine gives about half the xp and gold as threatening, but is about 3-4x easier, so you shouldn't worry much about being on routine. I used to farm routine like crazy because it was easy as heck and much less stressful than threatening, but you may get bored with routine once you are geared enough and/or are playing a high level character, in which case threatening is worthwhile. And perilous has about a 25% gold bonus and ~100% xp bonus over threatening, while being about 3x harder, not worth it for gold/xp, only worth it if you are bored by threatening difficulty.
