Yep. I'm surprised that James at least is not a required squadmate for the mission on Earth. The platform is required for Chromos, Liara is required for Thessia and Garrus and Tali are required for their missions if alive, so why can't James be required for Earth? It is his homeworld. The same for Ashley and Kaidan if alive or not sent to Hackett.
Personally I'm very grateful that it wasn't forced and find it rather troubling that someone would argue that something should be forced in the first place. Again its personal but I myself hate the moments of the game where they impose a certain squadmate to be in your team, especially when it isn't fluid. Some of Tali's inclusion is fluid, I get why she should be there during the geth dreadnaught. It seems objectively the best move. I don't understand the forced inclusion of EDI at TIM's base, Liara being forced on Thessia for sentimental reasons (her emotional instability could even be argued as a possible threat to the overall mission) or having Liara forced during the From Ashes dlc. The Leviathan DLC also forced EDI and James in your party, though in non-combat roles. EDI I can understand (though fail to see why she HAS to be there physically) but James especially felt forced to me.
I'm pretty sure I've even see you mention displeasure at having the Citadel casino mission be 'forced' to only certain characters (though not the same as being forced to one individual, I understand). Taking choice away from the player is not something I would advocate and feel a lot of the issues with the trilogy people have stem from lack of choice. I get why James should be part of the rush but that doesn't mean I think they should FORCE it on us. Let me decide if I want to take him along. Giving players the choice to play the way they want with whom they want is the best way to ensure people are satisfied.
"At least is not a requirement for earth" is actually a pretty big, significant deal, imo. To the point that I don't think its fair to begin it with "at least". As if the LEAST they could had done is to restrict player's choice by imposing his inclusion on the mission. That seems like a very broad perspective for what "least" means, imo.
I used Liara and Garrus. They had been with Shepard from the beginning.
I'll have to remember that next time she asks me to hack some files for her and only teams up when she wants my help with something in ME2. Lol.
