Javik is the Prothean avatar of Vengeance.  He's the last of his kind, but nobody deserves a final chance at revenge more than him.  And if Shepard would fail, I couldn't bear making Javik watch and wait for the destruction of yet another cycle.  He was the one that the Protheans picked to live to fight another day.  All of his cycle's hopes -- his moment -- is now.  He was born to do this.

Ashley/Kaiden is the only other living human Spectre, so I'd need her/him on reserve with her/his great power to help humanity and to get results if Shepard fell.  Liara is too valuable for her role as Shadow Broker to risk sacrificing.  Tali is too valuable as an engineer, an incredibly resourceful one, on the Normandy to risk sacrificing.  EDI is the Normandy, as far as I'm concerned.  In Ashley's/Liara's/Tali's/EDI's cases, yes, they are all female, and I couldn't deal with seeing them fall on a suicide run that may be the last chance this cycle would ever have to bring down the Reapers.  Seeing a male counterpart fall would fuel my rage and heighten my battlefield senses, but seeing a female counterpart would take something away from me, possibly distract me from making a ruthless decision in order to survive, no matter how Paragon I'd been, if need be.  And as the captain of the Normandy, I'd want my crew to survive me if it came to that.  I'd want each of the women to have the possibility to better their respective peoples.

So I'm left with Garrus or Vega.  Archangel is a great sharpshooter and long-time, trusted friend, maybe the best of friends, but Vega is a tank and future N7.  This last run would make or break Vega as legendary.  I'd have the feeling that Vega would simply be that lucky.  And this is earth, on a micro-level, we're fighting for, after all.

I'd pick Vega and Javik.

James and Kaidan/Ashley look the best, wearing their Alliance colors and fighting for the homeworld.

Still, I almost always bring Garrus/Tali. 'Cause bros. On higher difficulties Liara replaces Garrus.

I prefer to pick Garrus and Javik/James. I headcanon the VS as the acting commander of the Normandy, Tali and ED-I are too fragile and Liara is too important to risk.

All I want to know is how the squadmates you didn't choose to go with you to take down the AA Battery, got to the FOB, and then got back on the Normandy in order to show up at your funeral at the end.

My guess is since the Normandy has 2 shuttles, Steve using one to take Shepard to London and whoever is left, takes the other shuttle to the forward operating base. Once Shepard chooses the 2 squadmates for the beam run, the others take the shuttle back to the Normandy. The question I have is how did Steve get back on the Normandy?

They were my choices for my canon run as well.

Although in retrospect I did feel sorry for Garrus. He and Liara had also been the squadmates I used in the finale of Mass Effect 1, which means that Garrus got wounded in every game.

I take Liara (LI) and Garrus.

Tali is other squadmate to whom my canon Shepard feels especially close, for obvious reasons.

I generally take Liara and Tali to Ilos in ME1. Tali's tech skills are crazy useful vs the geth you face in that mission. Garrus gets the nod in ME3, due to the wider variety of enemy types, plus he's more durable than Tali.

For the very first trip into Earth, I brought James so that he could help me clear the path to Anderson. But for the beam run, I took Garrus and Kaidan. It's always been Garrus and Kaidan since ME1, but especially Garrus. He's like my Furby, my lucky charm, can't go into a potential boss fight without him.  :P And it felt right having my best friend be my lover's (Kaidan) shoulder when I had to leave him behind... unnnn.
