Hey guys, been playing through nightmare with a warrior and I gotta say, compared to a mage, the combat feels a lot more sluggish. Was wondering if you guys could suggest your own build that allowed you to genuinely enjoy playing as a warrior. Could be any type of weapon in combination with any of the specializations. As always, thank you everyone for your time!
What build made the warrior fun for you?

2h Champion was fun for me, but would have been much better had it not been for a lot of broken abilities. Going 2h helped to keep some of the challenge as SnS simply doesn't take any damage. Making a lot of use of Block and Slash helped to keep me engaged in the fighting.
I took Cassandra along as 2h Templar and it was fun doing wrath/purge combos with her for a bit, but it is a little overpowered since she can instant kill most stunable mobs with just that. IMO there's a few specialisations that just do a little too much damage for my liking.

I played a dw rogue on my first PT and although it was very frustrating, I still think I enjoyed it more than I'm enjoying warrior on my second PT. Think I'll head towards the Champion-SnS build, so that I can laugh maniacally, once I can pick that specialty. ![]()

Both S&S Templar (a lot of combos + burst skills to use) and S&S Reaver (a lot of synergy with S&S tree and the Reaver tree, plus burst skills on top of the two Reaver main ones) are very fun to play.
I find S&S funnier to play than 2 hander, especially on a Reaver (where in the latter case you just spam two skills over and over again, not so with S&S). You have more burst skills and with less CDs, more combo synergy both alone and with the party, and either more survivability to practically do whatever you want. You lose something on burst damage output on a single burst given the lower base weapon damage, but this is compensated easily by the aforementioned points.
However it is true that there's innate fun on playing a warrior with a big two handed sword no matter what, so it is in the end just matter of opinion for what it concerns the type of warrior to use (S&S or 2 hander). As far as spec goes it depends what you find fun: if you prefer DPS then go either Templar or Reaver (Templar if you like to be more powerful at CC/combos, Reaver if you prefer raw damage), if you prefer tanking then surely Champion.
All in all warriors are very fun to play in DA:I, especially S&S warriors that even in DA2 were much more boring than 2 handed, not so in this instance (and maybe it's also for this that I find S&S funnier to play than 2 hander in DA:I, because in previous DA titles they did always get the short end of the stick instead). Same goes for archers that in DA:I are surely better done than in the previous iterations and are very fun to play if you like the style (at first I didn't think so but after playing more with them I changed idea).

Edit: on nightmare/hard if you want to make more effective use of your 2H warriors you need to combine barrier and guard.

Don't agree with the Archer comment in regards to DA2. It was very fun playing Archer in DA2. Very powerful. Rain of arrows, awesome AOE. Bursting arrow (explosive arrow in DAI), was actually FUN and useful in DAI it's a fly swatter, utterly pathetic in damage. Pinning shot and full draw hit hard too,and I preferred the sounds.
Assassinate ability was excellent OHK. DAI Archers might be good, but I don't think DA2 was any worse.

...also I did champion, to minimize some of the damage , and then mostly battle master + 2h with some van sprinkled in. It was more fun than I expected, as I prefer to do rogue or Mage.

I named my Trev Big Tex, gave him a mullet and handlebar moustache, and crafted a 2H maul called "FREEDOM!!!!!" and giggled every time he smacked down a demon with it.

Did a 2h champion make the game playable outside of tac cam?

What is SnS? Sword and shield? Basically with one-handed and shield?

I can't speak for Nightmare (I'm playing on Hard), but OMG, I'm loving my 2h Reaver! And I'm not usually one to enjoy playing warriors, especially the high-risk-high-reward style of the Reaver--I'm usually much more conservative, preferring ranged characters who stay out of the direct action.

Yeah, SnS or S&S is sword and shield, but more appropriately (at least for this game) abbreviated as W+S, weapon and shield.

DA2 Archer wasn't bad but it was too overshadowed by a DW. Simply put the difference was too ample as practically archers had nothing more the DW had (apart some more AOE, but that surely wasn't enough to compensate). In DA:I DW does still more damage (as it should be btw) but archers are not that far behind and they got more versatility and uptime. All in all they are on par all points taken in consideration.
DA2 DW rogue was miles ahead the archer rogue. It wasn't even a challenge.

Probably FAR from optimal, but my AE 2H Templar gives me the instant gratification I like when playing a 2H warrior.
PBAE with the Wrath stun & Purge detonation.
Crazy high DOT with upgraded Earthshattering Strike.
I was disappointed with 2H Reaver, to be honest. My issue with Reaver is that it turns you more into a “Beastman” class that claws at the enemy and your sword is a stat stick glued to your back. Has very little synergy with anything else (the Reaver abilities are hard scripted to only enhance other Reaver abilities) and has zero detonation or CC. It’s really a class that just replaces your autoattack with Dragon Rage, and you’re doing that all the time.

Champion-SnS: Maniacal laughter as I chop through everything while nothing can hurt me. Ever.
Also: To The Death is the bomb.
I've lately been having a blast playing Blackwall like this. Realized how much fun it was on a dragon fight, where all my party died and he was the only one left. With To The Death I was doing 30k shield bash to the dragon's guard, ended up soloing the last 40% of the dragon's health. Since then, I love taking control of Blackwall and wrecking it.

Two Handed Champion. Perfect blend of offence and defence.
You're not immortal, but you're still tough to kill. You don't hit as hard as a Reaver, but you still do huge damage.
I'd say it the most balanced warrior out there, and the most fun to play.

This was my biggest problem with the reaver. The way it works does not fit a warrior, might fit a unarmed class but not a warrior. Hated that my sword was just a stat stick.

Yes, absolutely. But that PT was on hard, not nightmare, so I had way more wiggle room. I imagine it'd still be pretty doable on Nightmare.

The biggest problem with warriors? Not picking them as your first class.
If you've previously rolled a mage, you miss the numerous different builds and tactical options available to the magically gifted.
If you formerly adventured as a rogue, you crave the deadliness of those masters of shadow, with their insane damage potential.
Going from either of those classes to a heavily armoured brute swinging around a sword just feels.... a wee bit vanilla.

This is probably going to be me. XD
First playthrough was a Male Qunari Archer.. loved it.. (Normal)
Second playthrough is a Female Elven Mage.. loving it.. (Nightmare)
Warrior though.. I wan't to play one but I do not know what way to go about it..
Do I go back to Qunari or Dwarf? If I do qunari, do I hold out until Qunari armor gets added to the game or do I just roll with the battlemaster gear? If I go dwarf on the other hand, SnS Templar.. Pump up magic resistance where ever possible..

Horribly disagree.
Currently playing mage (and did a 50+ Hours Rogue playthrough, but deleted due to boredom with Character) and all I do is play as Cass or Blackwall cause Magic bores me and I miss SnS.
