This is bothering me
It's pretty clear when they like or dislike you, but how do you know if you're friends? Do they all have special cutscenes where they call you their bro, like Dorian?
I'm confused because I was pretty sure that I had maxed out Varric's approval, but at the end all he says is: 'meh, I might write a book about you, bye', which made me wonder.
How do you know if you're friends with your companions?

My guess would be after doing their personal quest, a friendship is formed. Varric's relationship with the Inquisitor is more professional rather than best friends like with Hawke in DA2. Pretty sure they did that on purpose because they didn't want him to be the 'best friend' character again and wanted to retain how important Hawke was to him. I'd say Cassandra and Dorian are the new potential best friends in the game, at least in my opinion. I'm probably biased because I felt the closest to them from what I saw of their interactions with my character.
