Is dragon age 2 worth playing befor dragon age: Inqusiton?

I recently picked up Inquision and I was about to load it up, and then i discoverd the dragon age keep that lets you sort of anwsear the questions pertaining to the stories of the other two games.

This buged me because now I cant bring myself to play inqusition because I havent played Dragon age 2 yet (played origions and loved it)

However Ive heard some mixed reviews on DA2

so is it worth playing before I move on to inqusition?

Yes. Also get the Legacy DLC. Not going to elaborate further than that.

I'd say play DA:O first, but skip DA 2.

I'd say it's worth a shot, I still don't think it's quite as bad as some say, and there's some relevant stuff. Particularly in the Legacy DLC as said above.

It helps. It does tell the story of events that lead up to DAI. But really, if you played DAO, you know the general backstory and what kind of world Thedas is. So you know what kind of role the mages, the templars, the circle and the chantry all play. You probably have some kind of idea about the relationship between the major nations of Thedas. Technically, DA2 is a very small scale story. It takes place almost exclusively in one city. It basically bridges the gap between DAO and DAI with two major events (and a few minor ones), but those events will be pretty much explained to you so you shouldn't feel that lost.

So you could get by without it, but personally I liked DA2 and enjoyed it on its own merit.

Play Dragon Age Origins, and skip DA II.  You'll end up using the Keep anyway because you can't import your game saves over like you did with Mass Effect series. The dialog in Origins makes it worth your time, and there are many mods to make the game look amazing.  Goto Dragon Age Nexus to get mods.

Well, both the villain and context of the conflict have their origin on DAII. If you want to see how it began firsthand, play the game.

DA2 itself...just for fun.Only thing when it comes to DA2 that is important for DA:I is "DA2 Legacy DLC" since it's pretty much most related to DA:I and it's story plot.

DA2 is a short game. If you can skip things (instead of obsessively doing everything and exploring every single area multiple times), it'll be over in a day, maybe two. I personally played through DA2 before Inquisition simply because I couldn't remember anything from the game when I was building the world state in the Keep and I didn't want to make decisions without knowing what they were about.

Plus, DA2 can be fun when you don't expect much from it. It was a huge disappointment for me because it had a lot of potential and my expectations were high after DA:O... but on the second time, when I knew what to expect -- it was okay. At least I don't regret playing it again even though it delayed Inquisition for me.

I would say yes if you haven't played it before.

But if you have finished DA 2 in the past, skip it and use DA Keep instead.

It depends on why you like enjoyed Origins and how much time you have.  I really liked DA2, but that's because I play these games more for the characters and world than the mechanics or varied locations or to feel like the ultimate hero.  Hawke's story is not a victorious one and all the characters have significant flaws - which is exactly why I love them. It can make other players want to flip a table though.

Definitely.

While DA2 has a...questionable reputation and legacy*, if you've only played DA:O a lot of the plot isn't necessarily going to make a lot of sense, even with the in-game information presented.  Red lyrium, the main villain, the Mage-Templar war, Hawke, and the relationship between Varric and Cassandra are a lot more understandable with the context of DA2 and its DLC to fall back on.  Yes, that was emphasized on purpose, to strongly suggest you get the Legacy DLC at the very least.

*IMO it's a flawed, but not bad game.

Yes. If possible get the dlc's as well. Legacy and Mark of the Assassin are fun to play. I find the dlc better than the main game. Still like DA2.

Worth it to me. Story is good/decent, and its much shorter so it should move fast, and it adds much to DAI

I don't think you need to play DA2 to play DAI but it's worth giving it a play after you play DAI. I think it's a good game.

Don't need to play DA2 but I'll offer some subjective views here. Played DAO and all the DLCs and the expansion when they came out. Played DA2 and Legacy when they came out. And now I'm in, I have no idea what number playthrough, there have been so many, of DAI. Playing DA2 again for the nostalgia and I have to say I'm not finding it as horrible as I once did. It's quite enjoyable. Still have the same bugs and glitches though which are annoying (quests that are completed but never get removed from the journal, some that you cannot start if you mess up some particular order of events) but it's still a pretty damn good game, for what it is.

I'd say for the sake of continuity, for better understanding where the bad guy comes from in DAI, it's worth playing DA2 at least once. Would it spoil your enjoyment of DAI if you skip it? No. But it may just enrich it some in the end.

In any case, I'd say play it for the lore.  I love the action of the game and the character development.

I sort of enjoyed my first playthrough but got a bit fed up near the end of Act III and didn't finish it for months. Now on my third playthrough, having started a second just after finishing the first and loved it, having a great time on my third. I think building my character more carefully helped, and adjusting to the narrative style. Quite a lot of the game's flaws (I'm not going to pretend they don't exist) can be fairly comfortably "headcanoned" (handwaved by the player, in other words) as being elements of the narrative framing device. Not really spoilers because the narrative framing device is obviously introduced right at the start, but anyway: basically, I find the repetitive environments/NPCs and OTT combat animations and whatnot much less irritating - although still they aren't great - now I can tell myself it's just that Varric likes telling stories about flashy, impossible fighting moves and character interaction, he's not so keen on describing locations - "meh, it's a cave, they're all pretty similar, right, Seeker? Now, let me tell you about how Fenris leapt ten feet in the air with a fifteen-pound greatsword held above his head!" (Sure, it would be good if the game had been made so I didn't have to headcanon that - although I do actually like the ridiculous animations - but the game is what it is, and I'd rather enjoy the good bits and tell myself a plausible lie about the less good bits, than be annoyed by it.)

I played it after DA:I because I wanted to play all games of this series and I really like some of the characters. It's enjoyable, but you may have high standards after DA:O and DA:I, in that case you should probably play it first, those two are definetly better(in my opinion). Also, if you play it first you might encounter things in DA:I that make you think "Ah, how nostalgic...". The other way around like in my case would be "Ah! That's what that was...".
