I would play DAO about 50 times, then play DA2 at least once. :)

Should play DAII atleast once, in my opinion. Its an ok game, i do like it, but i played it maybe 3 times and i am not in a rush to go back either. So one through with Legacy is almost mandatory for story sake.

Defiantly, the story is far superior to DAI.

To be honest, it kinda feels like the bastard son of Dragon Age and you can't even make your DA 2 Hawke in DA I...

So i say unless your a huge completionist ignore it...

I'd say it is highly worth it.

DA:2 was pretty meh compared to origin but it was a very good game, it's mostly focused on the narrative and story and less on exploration.

You only need to play DA2 once and you appreciate it more after you play DAI, even though DA2 is one of the worst games ever produced still feels like dragon age

Maybe just once, but I don't think it's absolutely necessary.

Yes.

Also don't forget Awakenings for first game and Legacy for second.

If you got bored lower the difficulty to fasten process but i wouldn't pass the lore, story and characters.

Each to their own, but I honestly found DA:2 one of the most painful gaming experiences ever. I forced myself through it in the hope it would improve, but it didn't. I bought it again 2nd hand for £3 this year to try it from a different angle and see if I was just having a bad month originally - I wasn't I actually found it worse.

Everyone's different so by all means try it, but what I would say is that if you're not enjoying it by about 10 hours in don;t persist, it gets no better.

Play DA:O

Watch a DA2 long play on Youtube and save your money

Use the money you saved to buy pizza, doritos and Pepsi then move on to DA:I

Yes, yes, and yes. Despite the mixed reviews the game is good. And if you ask me, the story is a bit more in depth than DAI. Even if you end up not liking the game it's good to get a feel of the characters, story, lore, and etc first hand (as in, not reading everything on wikia.) But that's probably just me. If you honestly don't care just go and watch a playthrough on Youtube at least.

It's worth playing DA2 at least once I would say and before anyone jumps on me I like all the DA games but I'm one of the rare few I think that actually enjoys DA2 and DAI more than Origins. But I love and enjoy playing all of them Orgins included

If you do make sure you get the Legacy DLC.  Overall I would say yes play it.  You can probably get it dirt cheep.  If you go in with an open mind and realize there will be flaws (repeating maps, enemies spawning from the ceiling) you will be suprised by how fun it actually is.  It is still very entertaining and the Qunari stuff is gold.  In some ways the game is actually a giant prologue for DAI.  It starts the mage templar conflict, some key characters and party members in DAI were introduced in DA2.  Of course I would tell you to get DAO as well but in the case of DAO it not so much sets up the other two games as much as it just sets up the entire series by introducing the lore and key players and factions.  Also DAO is just damn good.  In my opinion it is still the best game in the entire series and I am not one to get influenced by nostalgia but DAO is just that damn good.

Is dragon age 2 worth playing befor dragon age: Inqusiton?

I recently picked up Inquision and I was about to load it up, and then i discoverd the dragon age keep that lets you sort of anwsear the questions pertaining to the stories of the other two games.

This buged me because now I cant bring myself to play inqusition because I havent played Dragon age 2 yet (played origions and loved it)

However Ive heard some mixed reviews on DA2

so is it worth playing before I move on to inqusition?

Yes!

Thing is you don't have a lot to lose, in the grand scheme of things it's a pretty short game, you can get it done fairly quickly.

Its weaknesses are largely due to the unexpectedly small scale of the game and the drawbacks brought on by its unfortunately rushed production thanks to EA. For me, these weaknesses are overshadowed by the more entertaining aspects of the game.

IMO it tells a great story and brings you some of the coolest, most memorable companions in the franchise (one whom returns as a companion in DAI because he is that cool) For me I found that due to the more set protagonist + narrative, it had the most emotional impact on me more than DAO and DAI. I really felt the protagonist's humanity and her relationship to her friends and family, and that made the crazy events surrounding her have more gravitas. Jeez I was really moved when the end credits rolled :crying:

There's also the benefit of understanding the politics of Thedas...the ending of DA2 (as well as one of its DLCs, Legacy) is basically the cause for DA:I's entire plot.
(you should play both DLCs though, mark of assassin was tons of fun)

I would play DA2, yeah, especially with Legacy (Mark of the Assassain was great fun, too, but less necessary overall, I think). Personally I loved the game.... though I went in with verrrrry low expectations, and I think that helped a heck of a lot. XD It's got its flaws, certainly, but the story is interesting and it definitely plays a role in DA:I, just as Origins does. Plus you can breeze through it on casual if you're worried about time investment.

Agreed @Katsolo I think DA2 is a kind of marmite style game that either you'll love or you'll hate it personally I like it more than Origins although for me Inquistion trumps both but as I said in my post I like all 3 and am going through the Origin's expansions later before moving back onto DA2 and DAI

Is dragon age 2 worth playing befor dragon age: Inqusiton?...

Yes.

Just mentally ignore the fact that every cave looks the same.

Other than that you'll be fine.

I found that a lot less bothersome once I decided that it was part of the "framing device" - Varric's just a lot more interested in character interaction and fight scenes than bothering to describe every single cave in detail. "Meh, Seeker, you know what caves look like, rocks, spiders, blah, blah..." Doubtless this is affording the company more credit for cleverness than they deserve, but it also makes the game more fun for me, and it's not like if I'm sufficiently irritated they'll release a "caves aren't all the bloody same" DLC, so I'm rolling with it.

I played DAO, then DAA and beat DA2 last night. It was worth it, because when you play DAI, the whole story comes together. DA2's events are a big part of DAI and I think DAI should be played after experiencing the other games. I do recommend the DA2 DLC Legacy if you want to follow DAI a bit more closely.

DA2 was my first DA game, then I got DAI and DAO later. The mixed order did not change the fun of the game, but the perspective can be changed greatly and clarified further if you know what's going on.

As for people who don't like DA2, many are for reasons like repetitive maps and other pointless stuff, but to me that did not take away from the story and how amazing it gets as you progress through all 3 Acts. I would play it for yourself and judge it on how you feel, not what others say. If you are not enjoying it, you don't have to play it.

If you can get it cheap, it's worth a play. It will probably help you understand what the heck is going on in Inquisition. DA2 has many, many problems. First off, if you really want to play it, get the Legacy and Mark of the Assassin DLCs. They are better than anything in the entire game, which is not a ringing endorsement for the main game, I know.  Legacy is tied to the plot of Inquisition, and MotA is fun but mostly it's a great look at the Qunari, something that was missing in both games, even though the Qunari have a presence in Kirkwall in DA2. Plus it has an elf that doesn't look freakish.

The story is passable and has some interesting parts. However, it ultimately fails to live up to it's premise, A Rise to Power, and it doesn't follow through with the things it does do well. Unfortunately, the characters are mostly flat and boring by themselves. That said, and I cannot not stress this enough, the party interaction is great. How Bioware managed to make boring characters interact in an interesting way is impressive.

Gameplay wise, the combat overshot its attempt to speed up Origin's slow pace. They went too far into the action game style so now characters move strangely and fly across the screen. Areas are reused and fights are often in waves with new enemies seeming to come out of nowhere . In the cities they at least try to make it look like enemies are jumping down from windows

TL;DR: DA2 isn't a terrible game, but it's not great and was a big step down from Origins.

Yes! you will not be annoyed by the generic story of "the world needs you because you are the only one allowed to save it", and given the severe lack of cutscene in DAI, DAII will be only fresh air.

I loved DA: Origins, but played it once.

DA2 I played 9 times...I actually had no idea I did that many playthrus.  Yeah, everything looks the same, but the action rocks, party banter is awesome, and I loved the character development.

I enjoy the hell out of DA:I, but I doubt I'll do 9 playthrus.

Seriously, DA2 must be the equivalent of my guilty pleasure 80's movie.  (5 were fem warrior Hawkes, wtf?, 5?)

I suppose I really liked that game.  I think my best piece of fanfic is a femhawke/isabela romance/angst thing.

Admitting you like DA2 on a BioWare forum seems to be the equivalent of saying Ishtar was a great movie...last time I check you could get a used copy of DA2 at game stop for under 5 bucks on the 360.

I also enjoyed dumping my guilty pleasure on my BFF who told me how horrible DA2 is...however did 2 playthrus saved on my cloud while house sitting...just sayin'...there's not a shortage of other things to do around my house.

In the end, everyone says DA2 blech...and then sneak it like Mad Dog 20/20 at a HS party, IMHO.

The DA2 story was still a great one to me, even if people hate on it so much. Your character starts from nothing, hits it big in an expedition, buys your mom's mansion back for her, and gains an unlikely group of friends. You play wingman/woman for Aveline, become best pals with a dwarf who makes you sound like the Maker's right hand, and basically save everyone's tail.

The game is what you make of it. I try not to listen to others and take whatever game I play at face value. So go for it. Play the game, learn some lore, develop your theories. It's entertainment, and people can go clench a coin in their derriere all they want.
