Is dragon age 2 worth playing befor dragon age: Inqusiton?

I recently picked up Inquision and I was about to load it up, and then i discoverd the dragon age keep that lets you sort of anwsear the questions pertaining to the stories of the other two games.

This buged me because now I cant bring myself to play inqusition because I havent played Dragon age 2 yet (played origions and loved it)

However Ive heard some mixed reviews on DA2

so is it worth playing before I move on to inqusition?

It's pretty much a bargain bin game, so there's not much of a reason to NOT get it, if to play it once.

The keep will let you make the choices, but the game will give you better context about them.

For the disaster it is/was, it's still worth the 20 bucks.

It's the worst of the series, but it does give you some background information on some of the things that show up during Inquisition. Especially Red Lyrium and where it first came from.

You can get it fairly cheap these days, just be ready for heavily re-used environments and wave after wave of enemy reinforcements if you do play it.

Go to the nexus and get some mods to help you out. One of my favorites is the mod that allows you to kill all enemies instantly. Because the combat is very 'spastic' and not well-done like DAO, I really disliked it. Being able to start a combat, spend a few seconds watching it, and then hitting that kill button allowed me to play all the way through twice and really enjoy the characters and story without being forced to actually deal with all the combat.

The story is good, the characters and banter are excellent. And definitely make it worth the play-through.

It's a decent game, the reused environment can be a drag if it bother you (I didn't mind) but if you enjoy the story (which unfortunately for me I didn't like) then it's totally worth it at bargain price. That game is built on good ideas, but on half the normal development time and it shows.

It depends.

DA2 focuses on:

- the protagonist's personal story (instead of an ~epic~ world saving thing like DA:O and DA:I are doing)

- story events instead of exploration (if re-used environments bother you, you will be annoyed. I didn't mind.)

- more action-y combat than Origins had. However, Inquisition goes even more action-y...

- you do notice it's a rushed game at some points, yes

I'd personally say yes, 'cause DA2 is dear to my heart. But don't go in expecting Origins from DA2, it is not that and will disappoint you if that's how you approach it.

DA2 tries to have a personal story focused around a single city with conflicts developing over time. It discards exploration in favour of lots of quest cutscenes (= opposite of Inquisition, essentially). Going from DA2 to Inquisition might be a little jarring though, because they're trying to do opposite things.

If you find it cheap somewhere, it's absolutely definitely worth it. If you don't find it cheap, then it depends on what you want out of it, I guess.

I wouldn't want to play Inquisition without playing DA2 that's for sure.

Tbh I'm not even convinced that Inquisition is the better of the two games.

I replayed DA2 just before the release of DA:I. Sadly I didn't it enjoy any more than I did when it was first released and, when I did play DA:I, I didn't feel that playthrough made much difference.

I never played any of the DLC for DA2 (playing the main game was more than enough!) but one of the "big reveals" in DA:I will have far more impact if you've played the Legacy DLC ... apparently!

For me, then, I'd say you can afford to skip DA2 but, if you do bother to play it, then it's probably worth playing the Legacy DLC, too.

I know many people dont like DA2, but the hate it gets is beyond me.  Its got a good story, and the graphics and gameplay are much better than the clumsy DAO.  Iliked Origins as a start point and had fun, but the second game was a much smoother experience.  I'd really recommend playing it before getting into Inquisition.

If you care for the whole story of DA and 'how it all began' you should definitely play DA2. Just don't expect it to be your typical Bioware save-the-world-from-epic-evil story.

Many people hate this game, but despite its glaring flaws (reused environments, crazy combat, enemies falling from the sky) its still good. It focuses on one character's personal story so expect to fail, a lot. But in my opinion this is what actually makes it good.

So yeah, don't mind the faults but try to enjoy the story, its what Bio is good at.

I thought the characters, banter, cutscenes, and LI's were great in DA2.

Some of the environments were quite 'tired' and elements of the character interaction felt very rushed (i.e. you don't get to talk to your companions for hours like in DAO.) There's not really a 'bigger picture' in DA2, and everything you do revolves around Kirkwall, and as others have said it's really just the story of one character and how they rise from a nobody to a champion.

The (female) Hawke voice actress is great though, especially as being snarky, and although the relationships feel less fleshed out than DAO and DAI, as you get so many fewer scenes to talk, the companions and their relationships with Hawke are definitely a highlight for me :)

Worth a play!

DA2 is, in a way, DAI's prologue, so it is definitely worth playing. Especially with the Legacy DLC. It is very different from Origins and Inquisition, and has some flaws, but judge it by its own merits. Personally, it is dear to my heart and my favorite of the series.

The only thing I regret now is not playing Legacy when I played DA II. Bioware should include all Legacy stuff on the base game damnit.

I recommend it, esp to read the Codex entries for lore and backstory info. It grants greater insight to the events at Kirkwall, and helps clear some of the mysteries in the story and series, for me at least.

As far as DLC, I enjoyed Legacy, MotA, and the Black Emporium.

Yes, it gets a lot of hate around here but pay that no mind.

Absolutely yes. There are characters that appear in DA2 and Inquisition, both as cameos and companions. There are a couple of decisions in DA2 that can change how things play out in DAI.

You should sure play DA2 and it's not like it'd cost you much these days. Ignore the Hatedom, because I personally enjoyed DA2 far more than Origins both in terms of Story and Gameplay (not the reused maps though, that's one part of DA2 everyone admits sucks).

Also, Dragon Age: Inquisition pretty much follows directly on from the events of DA2, unlike DA2 itself which starts its story at the beginning of DA1. I personally think DA:I story comes out of nowhere unless you've played DA2 and DA2: Legacy.

I would recommend it. Its not so bad for what it is, it was just a victim of not being a match for the hype. The only glaring issue to me is the re-use of environments. However, it is both cheap, and fairly quick to play, and sets up a lot of what is in inquisition.

Don't hold yourself back, really! I spent about 250 hours with Origins and couldn't even get myself to play halfway thru DA2. If you loved Origins smart money says you will hate DA2.

Read up on the DA2 story on DA Wiki instead, or just read the Codex ingame.

I recently picked up DA2 before diving into DAI. I wasnt going to play it because of bad reviews but I must admit that I enjoyed it, the story was good, combat meh but you get used to it. But I dont regret playing it as it explains a lot of things in DAI and introduces you to some of the main characters in DAI.

I personally was disappointed with DA2 when I first started it. It was a good game (reuse of caves aside), it just didn't feel like a Dragon Age game. After going through the epicness of Origins, the hometown-hero aspect of DA2 just didn't seem like it compared.

But then I sort of started thinking about it in a different way, especially in retrospect after playing Inquisition.

Origins is about the Blight, and stopping a destructive force from becoming even more destructive. DA2 is about rebuilding after that destruction; but the story is told on a very personal level. It's also not necessarily about resolving any plot threads, it's about setting up new ones (

Spoiler
. And even before that, I realized the one thing I appreciate the most about DA2 are the characters. I'd say DA2 is worth it just for Varric alone.

I played some of DA2, but I hardly remember it (though I remember it being terrible), and I'm thoroughly enjoying DAI, so clearly knowledge of DA2 isn't necessary.

DA2 is worth playing through once (but skip the exiled prince dlc it is bugged and uncompletable).

But you could easily skip it as it's very much a "side story". It's no more required for Inquisition than reading the novels/comics.
