Had Alistair as king in my first world state import, and I have to say he seemed bloody miserable lol.

Not well suited to kingdom and either tied to Anora or split from HoF.

I really thought I was doing the guy a favour by pushing him into kinghood in DAO, but ten years on and with an Alistair Warden import, he just seems a heck of a lot happier as Warden. More involved, actually doing stuff, Anora free, and still having adventures.

I let Anora rot in jail.

I mean, in my canon playthrough, she betrayed my Warden THREE times during the Landsmeet. Good riddance, Kallian thought.

So that's problem Anora gone, and he seemed to be happy enough. Considering he's not Hardened in that one, though...

Aversion to life at court...? Well... A king with the common touch...? Ok, you're making me uncertain.

But he sure dodged a bullet by becoming King.

He's actually going to dodge it again in my second PT, because randomHawke.

I... think... he's... errr... not unhappy?

I don't think you can judge his happiness at a point that he's so pissed off that he doesn't even say hello to the people who defeated the Tevinter camping in his uncle's castle.

Agreed. His war table messages seem relatively cheery.  :D

Like others say, he seemed a little happier in his War Table messages...

I thought he seemed extra grumpy in my Anora and Alistair import though, that's compared to my Warden and Alistair King import.  I guess it can just get stressful being King sometimes.

Plus he is probably happier as King than some other outcomes as a Warden.  ;)

Romance aside, all Alistair wanted was to be a Warden and while it's possible that ruling the country grew on him eventually it would make sense that he's happier with a life he chose than the one that was forced on him.

I made Alistair a drunk in my current playthrough. I recall that regardless of choices in DAO, he is reluctant to become King. I didn't know that he could stay a warden.

I think it's more that (in my PTs at least) his wife's run off to Maker knows where to search for a cure to the fact they are both dying, and he's been left running a kingdom that's been overrun by demons, fighting mages and Templars, and a great effing big hole in the sky. On top of which a bunch of said mages have kicked his uncle out of his own house.

Yeah, I'd be less than delighted in that instance.

Well, he does tell you over and over in DAO that he doesn't want to be King, and we know he thinks being a Warden is the Greatest Thing Ever™, so...

Alistair as a warden seem depressive...

At least in my world state..even though my warden didnt do anything bad....he went and said she become a Sith.......

Anyone got that one ?? I dont know why would he say that....

The only 'Bad thing' I may have done..would be morrigan ritual....wich saved his ass...and he should be grateful......but nothing else that would warrant what he said...'walk a dark path...did dark things'....

Considering he seems to have completely lost his sense of humor, I'm gonna say no.

He seems more happy as king. Though you only see him for like five seconds so it's pretty much impossible to make a judgment one way or the other.

As a warden however, he's somewhat jaded and a bit disillusioned. I don't think he wants to stop being one, he's just not so idealistic about them

yeah that was my first pt too.

Anora looked bloody miserable as queen, I felt it suited her. She's just bloody miserable full stop. I hope every single day has been stressful and irritating to her.

I think whether you think Alistair is happier or not being king vs warden is kind of subjective. While Alistair tells you repeatedly during DAO he's not interested in being King you can read that as his reluctance to not only take on a leadership role but being concerned that people will rely on him the most ultimate of ways and lacking confidence IMO. If you harden him (which I hated doing and thought was over simplistic) he rises to his role as King if you place him in that situation. In DAI I'd see his happiest situations being either Warden or King minus Anora. Anora was known to be dominant and conniving and Alistair had zero interest in being with her so Anora is almost never going to show up in my DAI  Then again I romanced Alistair 99% of the time. So as a warden, Alistair is still with my HoF, as King he's alone because my HoF sacrificed herself.

As the ruler of Ferelden with my Warden as Queen, his war table messages seem pretty much like ol' Alistair. But, there is a codex entry that mentions the disappearance of the Queen/HoF weighing heavily on him.

I have never made him a Warden in any of my playthroughs, but judging by the youtube videos he seems weary.

I prefer warden Alistair in all 3 games.  He's super great.  (though the bug with him not acknowledging his relationship with the Warden in DA2 sucks)  I don't know for sure if he's happier in one role or the other, but he seemed really happy in DAI as a warden.  He and the Warden are still in love and hoping to find a cure for the calling.  Good stuff, good stuff!

Yep pretty much.

Plus the whole "ball and chain" nickname he has for HoF/Anora in Da2 if he's king makes me think he was still a tad resentful, in addition to how he behaves as king/warden in DAI.

As king in DAI, I think Lei comments on a WT mission with Orlais how negotiations were difficult because King Alistair hated all the politicking.

He's still got a sense of humor as a Warden as well which seems to be less prevalent as king.

I agree.  He's much more like himself (DAO Alistair) as a Warden.  I have a special world state where Hawke is forever alone just for my Romanced Warden combo.  Cause Hawke has to die in that situation.  Alistair >>>>>  Hawke.  Stroud however dies every time.  RIP Stroud.  lolz

I plan on doing something similar: Hawke romancing Anders, then going stabby-stabby on him after the Chantry goes boom. I am doing a DA:O playthrough right now, and will keep Ali as a Warden. As far as gameplay is concerned, it makes more sense to me to save the senior Warden than the Champion of Kirkwall, so it will be easier for me to make the logical decision with such a world state :)

Well, he does tell you over and over in DAO that he doesn't want to be King, and we know he thinks being a Warden is the Greatest Thing Ever™, so...

Are we really having this debate again? Both are valid choices, but there's more to it than just what he says. He also says that he's a screw up (summerized ;) ) who can't do the job (not true), tht he doesn't want to die in  ditch fighting darkspawn, and had an unreallistic view of the Wardens, but in what they do, why he was accepted, and in what it means to be accepted as a warden. Everything he says is based in childhood rejection and fear of failiure if he tries to do anything more than follow orders. Doesn't mean that having him be a warden isn't as good a choice, but making that choice based on his view of himself...debatable. That being said, I'd never marry him to Anora. That's pretty awful for both oth them. She's married to a guy who looks exactly like her dead husband (creepy) and he's married to a woman who completely disrespects him. For a guy who just wants to be loved and accepted for who he is, I can't imagine a worse fate.

Even though I have many king Alistair files on DAO myself, I do think warden Alistair is probably happier in the future (for awhile, at least). Not because of any evidence from his cameos in DAI, but because of just who he is. Alistair admits he would probably make a crappy king, and so not only does he not want to be a king because he doesn't want the leadership role, but because he doesn't think he will do well. You can 'harden' him as a game mechanic, but one sentence doesn't change a person that much suddenly. Of course, he seems to be doing a decent job if he does become one, but I think he was already comfortable in his role as a warden and that's what he had the mindset to do and be. He was happy following rather than leading, and being a part of something bigger than himself.

10 years later, he's matured and changed. 20 to 30 is a pretty big leap for a person as far as mental aptitude goes. So by DAI, he's probably settled into either role similarly, although both are crappy stressful jobs, imo. xD
