What I'm about to suggest is blasphemy, but believe it or not, you can survive without Shield Wall. ...as long as you aren't stuck in incompetent PuG after incompetent PuG. Let's break it on down.

Active Abilities:

X - Payback Strike+Sweet Revenge

Y - Counterstrike

B - Shield Bash+Ring the Bell

RB - Walking Fortress+Siege Breaker

Passive Abilities:

(Guardian)

Turn the Bolt

Resilience

Biggest Threat

Turn the Blade

Trust the Steel

Bulwark

(Combined Arms)

It'll Cost You

Deep Reserves

Bear Mauls the Wolves

Flow of Battle

Shield Breaker

Blood Frenzy

Crippling Blows

Unyielding

Payback Strike+Sweet Revenge

Getting Payback Strike with its upgrade is a great boon to start with and sticking with it will reward you throughout your career--short (heh) though it may be.

Counterstrike

Although it has a long cooldown time, Flow of Battle helps mitigate this somewhat as it not only taunts all nearby enemies, but it also knocks enemies on their arses for having the foolish notion of attacking you. It's a good time had by all. Except for your enemies.

Shield Bash+Ring the Bell

Why sprint when you can hurl yourself at the enemy? With RtB, you can clear a room in no time, especially off of even the slightest incline. It also shreds enemy defenses, making Red Templar Commanders much less of a pain to deal with than usual and serves as an Impact combo to punish your foes even more. Great power with great utility and a whipfast cooldown time.

Walking Fortress+Siege Breaker

Unkillable! UNKILLABLE! And if that fails, there's Unyielding. Pop WF before Cs Cs before WF to better your chances when hurling yourself into a mass of nasty beasties. Tell Coniferpuss you said hi!

Edit: Meant the other way around. My mistake. Probably should get more than a few hours of sleep before writing one of these. @_@

Terrible advice.

Never use Walking Fortress before Counter Strike at the beginning of a fight. Getting hit while WF is active will reduce all cooldowns, including Counter Strike's. And starting a fight by blowing your invulnerability instead of using an area taunt is just retarded.

And on Perilous you are better off skipping Shield Bash for Unbowed/War Cry to survive those few seconds until WF comes off cooldown. Otherwise it's fine. Most competent players already know better than to use Shield Wall on Perilous, since you're better off hitting as many enemies as fast as possible for crits.

Oh look, it's a less effective version of the legionnaire build I posted weeks ago.

Shocking.

It is hard to make vastly diferent builds when you only have about six worthwhile skills.

No doubt that leap and strike and shield bash cant compete against payback and you need every other skill to survive.

My usual counterstrike tactic is to use it from far and wait enemies to get close since payback rules against tight packs of enemies.

Agreed.  I vastly prefer War Cry to Unbowed because of the upgrade (saves your bacon on occasion by reducing flanking damage significantly) and because it's a second, more spammable taunt--amazing with Cutting Words and just for having a low CD area taunt.  With the Payback/Warcry/Counter/Fortress build, you're not exactly hurting for Stamina so Unbowed isn't nearly as good as it might be in other builds.

I agree that Shield Wall isn't necessary, but I think War Cry is better so you can actually pull Agro. I'd replace Shield bash with it. And then you pretty much have the gist of the build I use. It's more aggressive, so it lends itself well to heal-on-kill weapons like the Caliban or w/e it's called.
