Seriously this needs to be fixed. They should have expected that the moment they announced this online feature stuff that their servers are going to be hammered like hell after wards.

I just don't understand why games just can't work anymore. Why can't I just buy my game, install it, and start playing without having to worry about it not working the way it was meant to. It seems to me that some one would test the servers before they decided to release a game, but maybe I just have higher standards than they do when it comes to games I spend my money on.
It's all down to buzz-word compliance. Marketing wants to have a "community" supporting a game, but they don't want to do the real work required to foster that environment. Instead, they hire some 2-bit programmers to ape Facebook and Steam and then wonder why PC gamers are so disappointed with their offerings.
I would completely agree with you, were it not for the fact that I attempted to install Knights of the Old Republic on my Windows 7 box last week. It was a complete disaster -- patches all over the internet, and crashes galore. It wasn't until I re-purchased the game on Steam that it actually worked again (!!!)
The moral of the story is that EA and Bioware should just let Steam do what it does best, and that they should stop trying to do this ridiculous "social networking" crap that they are not good at...

Same problem here, what a bunch of crap. Not being able to play a SINGLE PLAYER ONLY game because the servers are down?
You can in fact play this single player only game. You just can't play with your DLC. I realize it's annoying and was an oversight by EA, but just start playing your game and this evening when the server load dies down a little register your DLC. You're not going to finish the game before that happens.

Agreed, I didn't pay for DLC to watch a "Please Wait" screen while EA strolls down to the bank.

I should pirate it just so I'm able to play without hassle and buy it but never bother activating or playing my purchased version since the pirated version works so much better in every way.
