And the Maxim pattern machine gun. Maybe not an Icon, but that's just because modern movies and games don't make so much of it. Because this is the weapon that has killed more human beings than any other weapon.

It depends on the movie. I recall seeing some of these in some WWII movies.

It's not a "glamorous" weapon as it's usually mounted in place/on a vehicle so it doesn't lead to great "action" shots. Consequently, that's also why you don't run into it in most shooters.

And when they do feature mounted weapons in-game, it's usually a Gatling or Browning .50. In reality those weapons are just burst weapons, that either run out of ammunition or get overheated in seconds. The Maxim, you can shoot all day.

Finally, there is always this, beloved by at least one third of the world's politicians, the final weapon:

We need more pattern welded swords here. These things were real pieces of art when it comes to sword making.

I've always been a huge fan of the south african Truvelo 20x110mm anti materiel rifle, because of its sheer power and range.

Its a specialized weapon system, those naturally have a narrow range of applications. Its designed for destroying a tanks aiming devices, radar stations and up to medium armored vehicles from really really far away. And the occasional person hiding behind cover made from reinforced concrete.

My favorite weapon system of all the time is probably the MG 42. A killing machine if there ever was one, 20 rounds per second, highly accurate, portable, chambered in a great round, very reliable.

Hard to choose between such a wide variety of great weapons, but there are two that I have favored for quite awhile.

The Chinese Dao. Simply like its characteristics and its history of use, specifically in which time periods it has been used (which have been a fascinating read).

And the Thompson Contender. I find it appealing in style, and it packs a nice punch with its single-shot use.

It is the grandfather of all modern light machine guns. The most important innovation was the forward feed steel belt system. This has been almost exactly copied in all modern belt fed machine guns.

And if the MG 34 is the 'grandfather' of the modern machine gun, then this- the British Bren - is the 'grandmother'.

Basically, modern designs borrow heavily from this, and then slaps on the MG 34's steel-belt system.

As for general issue weapons, I'd totally choose the FN-FAL over anything else.

Hmm, I'd have to agree on Katana, Stg 44, MP 40, GW 43, MG 42 and FN-FAL. But some have got to be added:

And speaking of machine guns, this was mine.

The FN MAG. The most successful Western machine gun. It's licenced and used by umpteen countries under different names. In US service it's known as the M240. In Britain it's the L7. Israel, of course. Even France is finally adopting it.

Great gun. I could put almost every round through the bulls eye from 200m. All day.

The Nambu is basically the worst gun ever made. People don't even die whem you shoot them with it. They laugh. They laugh at you and your tiny gun.

But we are not necessarily posting weapons here just because they're *good*. Other reasons may be looks, technology or history. But yea, overall, Japanese WWII fire arms are underwhelming.

I have fired most of these guns and the Luger, for instance, is also crap (the trigger pull is awful). But it's an iconic pistol, and it introduced an extremely successful cartridge/caliber.
