Ha!

Ahahahahahahaha

Awesome.

That's a cropped version of a wallpaper produced by Namco to promote the game Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War. There's an extremely wide variety of planes to fly in that game, but the 'canonical' aircraft flown by the player element - "Wardog Flight" (108 TFS OADF), later "Razgriz Flight" - is the F-14. You can even see that the aircraft use the symbol of the Osean Federation on the fuselage, and not the US military.

I'm kiiiiind of an Ace Combat fangirl, so.

I liked Ace Combat, but then it got too... animesque and cartoon-y for me. Liked Assault Horizon though... well... most of it... well... I liked the bits that didn't rely on the crap combat system. It was pretty, but too forced in how it was used, and it felt like several parts got cut for the revamped combat system.

Altogether, I like my military games to be significantly more military.

Zero>Every other Ace Combat ever.

The rest were great, but I loved the story in that game, as well as the soundtrack.

"Yo, buddy, still alive?"

Of course I am. I use the A-10 for everything.

I dunno. It was always an anime-esque series, with personal stories interwoven with the air combat. Ace Combat 04 probably handled that best.

I kinda liked the arcadey combat; more realistic flight sims, like the ones that proliferated for most of the 1990s, had the problem of incorporating all of the insanely boring aspects of flight in addition to the exciting ones. They were fun enough, but sometimes you just want to pull off ridiculous tricks and shoot things and not worry about fuel and lift and suchlike things.

Zero is best game. "Zero" is best track. Pixy is best boss battle. These are facts, not opinions. :)

It appears to be the American "school."

Considering the technology used to make the picture, I'd imagine circa 1960s America.

Reminds me of the F-105 Thunderchief. It might be a Republic aircraft then.

*pulls out a huge book of Awesome*

Nope. I still think it's American, though. Twin-engine. 1960s may be too generous, but no sooner than 1950s.

It also bears a certain resemblance to the P/F-80 Shooting Star.

Hmm, well yes, some good thoughts there maybe...

But your timing is off. The project started in 1945, first flight June 1949, all prototypes destroyed by end of 1953.

- Let's reason a bit. First maybe we can guess the manufacturer? Republic you said? Nah, Republic were kinda into the "bigger is better" paradigm, and made big, beefy hunks of airplanes. This slim, elegant and pointy plane doesn't seem to fit there, does it?

So, which anonymous star could this be? What other manufacturer made a handful of jet planes that had a resemblance to something like this?

Don't talk crap about F-14!

I can defeat you with a BF-109 in any game!

Maybe that's another reason why I liked it so much. I didn't get that anime feel from the way the story was told, with the interviews instead of cutscenes.

Now you're making me sad there's only one Ace Combat game on the PC, and it's not in the Ace Combat universe - instead it's another crappy US versus Rogue Russians thing...

Oh, F me. I knew I saw some of the F-5 in there. It'd make sense for Northrop to include some similarities from an earlier prototype, perhaps...?

Damn elevator placement and jet intake is off, though. But other than that, I think you could mistake it for the F-5 Tiger.

Edit: And nope, nope, nope, nope. The P/F-80 was the correct train of thought. It's a Lockheed. YF-90. Can I haz cookie nao?

Who shopped the type out on the nose, by the way? Wiki has exactly the same photo, except there's "F-90" written on the nose.

It even makes sense. P/F-80s were introduced in 1945, and Lockheed instantly initiated a replacement project. Because planes can take even ten years from the beginning of the process to serial production.

It's a plane that is purely a product of its time. Big and unwieldy, hard to repair and get replacement parts for, not serviceable for most conditions, limited mission scope, and just plain out-of-date compared to more modern fighters like the Hornet. It has speed, but it has all the maneuverability of a brick. It was also used by the Navy in a role that it wasn't fit to fly in (namely as a fleet defense superiority fighter, rather than the ranged interdiction interceptor it was meant to be used as.)

Unwieldy? The F-14 is plenty manuvrable and fast as hell.

Repairs/mantainance only became the problem after the original moulds were destroyed. It was a industrial/company sabotage and political interest power play.

And it's the best looking jet ever. F-18 is like a decrepid old grandma in comparison.

Game image or not, that airplane is still pure sex.

Also, Ace Combat has been on my "to play" list for a while. So little time..

The Blue Angels are the coolest. I might have been four when I first saw them in person. That's when I decided I wanted to fly jets...

Not that I ever pursued it. Now I sell used cars and I have a kid, so that's pretty much never going to happen. I'm only 23, so I don't think it's too late, but I don't want to leave my little buddy.

Only F4 is more badass than F14.

F15 is like a simpler brother of F14:

Didn't the F-15 Eagle get retired because it had a risk of falling apart mid-flight towards the end of it's service life?

Woo. Sexy. I actually had this pic modified as a signature on a different forum for a long time.

It's crap.

My dad flew them back in the 80's. He hated the plane.

It wasn't known for being very popular with its aircrews.

Nope, still flying, and still got a ways to go.

This is sexy. Caught it as the storm was happening.

Could've been a temporary grounding, before they figured that out.

Also, that's a.. really nice pic. You've answered your nation's call, I take it?

I've spent my entire adult thus far in the military, and I've had plenty of friends join later, after having a kid and getting the encouragement to try out their dream.

Go for it man. Your little buddy will support you 100% of the way.

I got to spend my childhood having two of the coolest parents ever. Dad was a Navy aviator, and Mom was a spook on levels even I can't reach. I'm an Army spook, and I just make stuff explode every now and again. Not that I don't adore my job, but mom and dad had it cooler than I ever did... even if they had to be squids to get there. I don't know. I might try to join the Navy after my term with the Army's up, if just so I can get some more free traveling.

For almost 10 years now, yeah. United States Army (bringing freedom to you since 1775).

It's beautiful isn't it?

My experience in the military has made me one of those sick individuals that's made me think things like this are beautiful. If you aren't American, you might say that in some ways, I'm the stereotypical violent American with a fetish for the military. And explosions. Specifically, calling them in.
