I think the MP44 is credited with lots of things, but more a matter of inspiration rather than design; I've also heard so many people claim that Kalashnikov "copied" the design but from what I recall (I'm no expert on the MP44, though) it used a tipping bolt along the lines of the Bren and FAL rather than the AK's rotating bolt, and the rest of the design was probably similarly, er, dissimilar.

The MAG (M240, GPMG etc) is also something I'm bitter about never having a chance to fire! An extremely well-regarded weapon and for good reason too. Interesting heritage, its basic mechanism is the same as the BAR, only inverted, and personally I think that the FN Type D shows a lineage between them. The MAG is obviously much more heavy-duty and also takes advantage of the MG42-style belt-feed, but it's still a BAR at heart.

The main inspiration from MP44 is, IMO, the downsized cartridge. The idea itself, that you do not need a full power, 1000 yard rifle cartridge, but do need a handy auto rifle.

As for the MAG, I'm heavily biased  .

The Russians copied the idea behind the rifle, not the rifle itself. And the idea was a compact high capacity full auto rifle made of cheap stamped steel parts chambered in an intermediate rifle round.

I'd still pick the MP44 over any AK though. It just looks so much cooler.

Is that Canadian again?

Britain's SA80 Enfield. Unfortunately it had a lot of teething problems when it was first deployed in combat( like the M16-A1 ), but it's still a hell of a weapon.

Yeah: it was a good idea, though the specifics of how to do it right still seem a little contentious. Talking of bias, mine is for the UK's .280 that went with the EM-2 and Taden weapons system, but the 7.92 Kurz was ground-breaking (I can't un-see the dust on that photo now: my fault).

The LSAT( Lightweight Small Arms Technology ) is a small lightweight & compact LMG designed primarily for urban combat and CQC house to house fighting. Fully loaded with a 100 round satchel and caseless rounds the LSAT weighs a mere 11.4 lb and is 40% lighter than the SAW. It has a blistering rate of fire, but is easy to handle and it's short length allows it to be used as a room clearing weapon unlike the SAW. Despite its success among a small group of Army Rangers that tested the weapon and praised it's capabilities it will probably never see use among the different branches of the military.

I've always wondered how caseless ammunition seals the chamber, in regular ammo that's the job of the expanding brass case.

What prevents the pressure in excess of 50K PSI from leaving the chamber and creating a massive gas blow back into the action / shooters face?

I'm curious too. Heavy weapons use an obdurating disc (though I'm not totally sure how this provides an effective seal) but I'm not sure how well that design could be minimised for small-arms use. I have seen examples of experimental "semi-caseless" ammunition which still has about the bottom 0.5" of case to seal the breech, but I have no idea how they deal with actual caseless ammo.

The best example would be looking back a 150 years, back when people used bullets and powder but cases weren't invented yet. How a muzzle loader seals the breech is pretty logical, its just a barrel with one opening which is the muzzle, but there were also breech-loaders like the early Sharps used in the late Civil War. I've seen reproduction percussion Sharps rifles and the breech was sealed with special plate with extremely tight tolerances (hand-fitted) and it still didn't seal the breech to 100%, there was gas escaping through the tiny gaps between the plate and the falling block action.

And thats with the minuscule pressures of the slow black powder, modern nitro powder has several times the pressure black powder can create. Sealing the breech mechanically would be extremely challenging.

Psst, don't make it public... but these weapons are gifts from Asgard!

Bamboo stick?

The Chinese may call it Gun and the Japanese call it Bo.

Well, there's a (I assume it's not exactly the same) weapon called quarterstaff in the western European history, aye?

It's not like "stick" isn't the oldest, most used weapon ever.

Cool photos of a well-worn Mosin Nagant M91 here.

And anytime someone mentions caseless ammunition I immediately think...

I'm looking into something cheap that shoots cheap ammo like .22 to shoot at the range, cheap ammo being key but fun and accuracy as well. (looking to have my cake and eat it too)

Been looking at a Remington 597. There about $200 bucks at the Bass Pro Shop. Anyone ever fire one of these?

A friend has a 597, it jams every third round or so and it drives him mad, guess the stories I've heard about the 597's lack of reliability are true. Get a Ruger 10/22, they're time proven and extremely popular, there is no reason not to get one of them.

I have read reviews that this is due to over-tightening of the bolt guide-rails while re-assembling after cleaning, this forces them out of alignment. If there snugged to specified torque I have read there was little issues with jamming.

How detailed is your friend with maintaining their weapons because I'm kind of OCD when it comes to cleaning and maintenance, maybe it wouldn't be a problem for me??

To this day it's still one of my favorite Battle Rifles, the M14. Granted the original design was cumbersome and unwieldy, but thanks to modern day composites it's back and is a heavy hitter imo.

I was going to buy a 597 once, but it struggled to make it through an entire mag without failure.  Buy a 10/22 and never look back, man.

I'm currently in possession of my father's 10/22 that he bought new back in 1988. It was never cleaned until I ended up with it a few years ago lol.  I've never had any issues with feeding unless I was using some fly-by-night third party magazine with plastic feed lips.  The factory ten round rotary mags are the best, if you ask me.  I have three Ruger BX-25 magazines, two of which are great, and one is defective for some reason.

If you end up with a 10/22, order yourself some Tech Sights.  I have a set on mine and I absolutely love them.

There's always the Marlin model 60. Superb plinking rifle, but it lacks detachable magazines, which is its only downfall.

Alright Ruger 10/22 it is sir; you talked me into it.

Thanks. I hate buying a new gun and being sad after the first range visit.
