And loving it! Just wanted to say that. I highly recommend it. Takes the chore-like feel from the game and removes the map clutter. I haven't even gotten a prompt to unlock the Forbidden Oasis this time around and I don't really care.
Replaying without shards, asterariums, and tiles

That's what I did in my 2nd playthrough. I ignored the shards

I can't ignore it.
You can get some sweet gear and schematics early on, with enough shards.

Yeah, did that on the first PT but it just didn't really seem worth it to me this time. I honestly feel less overwhelmed moving through the areas now. Oh hay is that a skull telescope? Newp! Moving right along!

Haha I completely agree, those shards were the bane of my life in my first playthrough. Completely ignored them in my second and it caused a lot less anxiety. XD

The astariums were more of a pain in the ass to me.... and so far, the payoff sucks. The loot sucks. Maybe it gets better though. Not so with shards. Because you can farm those rooms.

The Astra-scopes were not bad at all, and led to some great gear. But I already skipped the tiles, and only took enough shards the first time to gain a couple of bonuses; did not wish to take the chance on releasing a possible demon into the Thedas.
THat's what within the furthermost chamber??? A Demon? I'm not yet there so...

I'm doing a do-all-the-things playthrough 1st. Not that impressed with the quests in general at the mo, so will just do main story on my next playthroughs.

Try skipping the shards AND most of the side quests. Much much better experience for me. Now if there is a way to get all the crafting materials I want and skip farming, I would be in heaven.

It's tedious, and I just discovered this because I didn't bother with them first time - you can keep redoing the war table missions to collect materials and stock up.
I was going to skip most of the side quests too but then I found I couldn't help myself from a role-playing perspective as I was running around. I wanted to save refugees etc. I definitely didn't do all of them - in fact I'm not even going to the Fallow Mire even though the judgement that comes from that is hilarious. I tried to focus on major side quests like capturing keeps.

Apparently it's a pride demon that drops loot you can get elsewhere.

I'm terrible at collecting things. I grabbed like 3 shards on my first PT and that's been it so far...

I find the asteraiums really easy (save for one of them in... ah, hell, I forget the area, one of the early ones, which surprised me). They're fun to me.
Shard collecting is not fun, but I keep doing it anyway. I'm not sure why.
Mosiacs, on the other hand, MEH. I haven't managed to collect all of them... do you get something if you do? I mean, sure, fragments of codex lore is nice, but is there a reward for finding them all? I'm so indifferent to it.

I bet that the majority of people feel that shard collecting is keeping them from doing important stuff.. Like you want to move on from a map in order to advance the story, and you've spent a lot of time there and then.... you're like * Damn, I still have to collect that those ***** shards.* Then you think that you'll collect them quickly, but noo.. it takes time, and you get furstrated as hell especially when they are not easily accessible. That's how I feel about them, but still do them.
I don't ride horses so sometimes it takes time to get from one shard to another.
Asteralums I avoid like plague because I suck at them... completed like 2 of them though.

Actually I thought the Astra-whatevers were neat puzzles at first but they quickly grew tiresome. And then once you'd finish the final one you'd have to backtrack to some area you've already fully explored to enter a cave and get gear. On this PT I've focused a lot more on crafting so I don't really need too many drops. Shards are just painful. I too wonder about the mosaics, I know the dwarf translates them but what is the reward? XP?

Shards are good for extra cash and early schemetics. But I am tempted to just ignore them. The only final thing worth getting is the Arishok face paint.

Lol I use shard hunting as a method of triggering more party banter. I also usually save it for the final thing to do on any given map.

I love the astrarium puzzles and found them really easy - it's just the route inspection problem, which is low level decision math.
Collecting shards is a chore though but I'm a completionist dammit!

Agreed they were easy - which is why they became boring (to me).

I find lately that most banter triggers after closing a rift, but never noticed with shards. Dammit!

Well I thought it's nice that they're introducing mathematical problems to a larger audience, and obviously you have to take into account that they had to make it accessible for the majority of the player base. So while I found it easy (Like that reactor stack (Hanoi towers) in the original mass effect) I have no doubt there are many people who found it extremely hard.

I agree. LOVED the Astrarium puzzles. All this complaining makes me see why games have been dumbed down over the years. People have become lazy and just want things handed to them.
Had no problem with the collections at all.

Alot of people just want things easily handed to them. They want instant gratification and don't want to work for it.
