The only reason to bother with shards if if you are having trouble killing dragons and need some really good elemental resisistance gear.

Alot of people just want things easily handed to them. They want instant gratification and don't want to work for it.
Not really. I just don't want to waste 30 hours picking up random collectibles every time I play again for story reasons. I promise you I'm not replaying because shards are just *that* fun.

I find lately that most banter triggers after closing a rift, but never noticed with shards. Dammit!
Oh I didn't mean to suggest that; I was only referring to wandering around the map. More travel time means more banter. I've noticed the occurrence with rifts also.

I will do NPC quests for good loot, not interested in wandering around for hours and jumping on high ledges (many times areas that you've already explored) just to get some pretty decent accessories that you can live without. It's game padding. Nobody here has said that they wanted the loot given to them for doing nothing. It's great that you enjoyed it.

There is plenty of travel time without resorting to shards.
Also some of the shards just annoy me on principle. Don't make me balance on a beam and then jump across crumbling roofs for a stupid tile; the only reason it's difficult to collect in those cases is because it's a game. #Realistically, I'd blast the thing off with magic, or have Iron Bull give me a leg up. This is assuming I felt a desperate need to collect them myself, rather than ordering an inquisition soldier to come over with a ladder and go get it.

re dragons, the gear you craft is pretty much just better than any loot you find.

Yes, this is what I'm discovering on second PT. Crafting is your friend, as tedious as it can feel at times. But it's pretty rewarding once you get something badass.

Pretty much, but if you aren't interested in crafting, you have this option. I crafted for myself but I really wasn't interested in outfitting my whole party in custom made stuff so I just gave my squishiest people whatever belt of elemental resistance and when their dumb AI made them stand in the fire or electrified water, it helped me a lot.

True, but many people are *greedy* and want to be rewarded with good loot for doing quests that are a real CHORE... like the shards. I still don't have all so I don't know what I'll get but I opened all the frost doors and got nothing. The loot was useless while the resistance bonuses came in handy.

I've played four games now, and this is the first time I've even bothered with the shards. I've only collected enough for the first three doors. Since I play on Normal, I haven't needed the extra boost, and the puzzles annoy me. I can't speak to how well you do if you ignore them on Hard or Nightmare, but on Normal, you can definitely live without them.

I love the asterariums....
And I haven't found all the tiles. Do they do anything other than decorate Skyhold?

The astariums were more of a pain in the ass to me.... and so far, the payoff sucks. The loot sucks. Maybe it gets better though. Not so with shards. Because you can farm those rooms.
Feel the same here about the astariums. Any ones that take me more than a minute to do, I'm not doing on my second run.

I love the astrarium puzzles and found them really easy - it's just the route inspection problem, which is low level decision math.
I thought they were fairly easy. If you've ever played chess you can figure them out. It's basically the same concept. Its just about thinking a few moves ahead.
I liked them as well, but more so for the lore blurbs than the loot. The loot was nothing special.

I'm never collecting another shard on a playthrough again... especially if I'm a mage and already super resistant to magic as my magic is is 100+ with my super crafted gear (Cradle of Sulevin baby). I still don't know what happens with Moasic pieces if you collect even a whole one. Does ANYBODY know?? Lol - Astraria (fancy Latin) are fun but there's an evil one that seems impossible on the Storm Coast because there's a line you can make but can't see very clearly in the diagram so you spend ten minutes trying to solve the impossible til you realise you can make another line to get around the zig-zaggy mess in one go.

I just ignore shards.
However, I have never bothered with the tiles anyway, I just pick up the ones I come across.
I at least try Astrariums once, I beat them all in pt 1, but since then I only give it a try or two before moving on, no reason t waste the time.

The problem is that if you do give good loot, then people complain that they're FORCED to do these chores.
I actually like these quests. There's the urge to explore, to blaze a trail -- to see a seemingly inaccessible location, and ask yourself "how would I get up there?" Looking for trinkets for a modest reward is a nice way to incenvitise this urge, without making it a necessary part of the game.
Of course, you could argue that by the 3rd playthrough you're not really blazing new trails anymore. But by the same token, any game that you play through 3 times must obviously have something going for it. And since the quests don't have a huge payoff, you also don't miss much by leaving them undone.

still no answer to what happens when you complete a mosaic...

THat's what within the furthermost chamber??? A Demon? I'm not yet there so...
It seems possible; the whole thing reminds me of an older AD&D module which is also set in a desert. That one had an imprisoned Efreet. As the MQ ended, I may return for one more set of bonuses, but will likely skip the final chamber in case. However, this place looks inviting to my Power Inquisitors.

Ignored all of shards/asteriums/mozaics/puzzle got some more then 24 lvl at end of game. So do it for exp? naah.. And most of time I had crafted items anyway on me which were 90% of time better then any loot.
Seems like this little games go-and-find are just for make actual game longer.

I liked the astrariums for one play-through, or at least the puzzles themselves, but even my first play-through stopped bothering with shards about half way through. I probably won't ever see the Forbidden Oasis again, to be honest. Mosaic pieces get picked up when I happen upon them, but I've never really hunted them down.
I don't really like collectables in games anyway though; if I wanted to spend my play-time trying to wedge my character into every corner of the map I would otherwise have no reason to be in, I'd become a QA tester.
So yes, Inquisitors #2 and onwards will probably never touch an Ocularum or Astrarium in their careers; half way through #2 now and I am enjoying the game more for it.

You get some lore/speculation about what they mean from that Dwarf dude in Skyhold. I don't know if anything happens if you complete all sets, haven't managed to. It's not really worth it, unless you're a lore junkie or have a compulsion about having half-finished art on your walls.
