Was anyone else bothered by the nobles' treatment of Cullen at the ball?

I didn't like it after a certain point. Some of the comments made me feel ... iffy. They became harassment and went past the flirting phase.

I hope that one day, people learn that comedy isn't meant to be politically correct.

Let's take another example; Iron Bull's relationship with Vivienne. Iron Bull's this confident, alpha personality badass. Around Vivienne, he's a submissive little puppy. A lot of people find this dynamic hilarious. I'm not one of them, but that's mainly because I don't like Vivienne, and not for the reasons I'm about to lay out.

Now, let's imagine for a moment that their genders were reversed, but nothing else about their characters changed. Fem-Iron Bull is a strong, confident, badass warrior, Male Vivienne is a cold, cunning, politically savvy mage.

Now, would anyone here find it funny if Male Vivienne were to "tame" Fem-Iron Bull the way that Vivienne does to Iron Bull in game? If every time  Male Vivienne spoke to her, Fem Iron Bull sheepishly called him "sir", would that be amusing?

Probably not. Would likely be some accusations of sexism thrown around. And those accusations may well have some merit to them.

But no one raises an eyebrow about that particular double standard, do they? I haven't seen it, at least. It's "funny" because you have this big, badass warrior being "kept in line" by this prim, proper fanshionista mage.

So, why the heat on this double standard that's more about parodying the fandom than anything?

Utter non-issue this for the same reason that comedians can tell disparaging jokes about their own race.

lmfao, seriously?

I hope Bioware doesn't listen; there's enough of this everywhere else must it infest video games too?

Why can't it be the Inquisitor? My character needs more in-game validation, dammit.

Fun fact: Given Bull's BDSM tendencies, the fact that he sees Vivienne as his "Dom" and goes all "Sub" around her is pretty standard fair for people in that lifestyle, gender reversal wouldn't actually change the relationship dynamic as their vanilla persona usually is very different from their BDSM persona. Of course, you have a point that the SJW brigade would be too stupid to recognize that.

Still, I get the point the point you were trying to make, but it's about respect, not censorship. No one here feels the game shouldn't feature it or it should be banned, it's just that some of us find pressing unwanted sexual advances on someone to be douche bag territory regardless of the 'victim's' gender and weren't pleased to see it.

If Cullen had been playing along and enjoying himself I'd've laughed my backside off but he was clearly uncomfortable and wanted it to stop.

Definitely felt this was iffy with the butt grab. In a normal situation, I think Cullen could handle himself, but maybe not at an Orlesian Ball where accidentally causing any offence/showing weakness during "The Game" would reflect badly on the Inquisition. He really doesn't have the freedom to react how he might have wanted to there.

One, society based on medieval times. Two, role reversal. Three, making fun of Cullenites and not sexual harassment. Four, this thread does not need to be a thing.

Bring along Varric to Halamshiral and he'll do the thing.

Absolutely, I don't think there's anything wrong with a female sub/male dom dynamic, just as there isn't anything wrong with the reverse.

I think what needs to happen in this situation is that we need to recognize what the joke actually is. The joke isn't "Man, sexual harassment is hilarious when it's being done to a guy!"

The joke is, "Man, you Cullenites can get a little overenthusiastic."

I've seen many a remark on these forums that - were they real people instead of fictional characters - the various love interests would certainly take umbrage with. The joke here is that if you put Cullen in a room with a bunch of Cullenites, he'd rather go through lyrium withdraw.

Quite frankly, I think the treatment the nobles give him at the ball is tame compared to some of the talk on this forum - talk that's all meant in good fun and humor, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Ultimately, I just think we need to be able to recognize when we, the fan base, are the ones being made fun of, and more importantly, that we need to be willing to laugh at ourselves.

It seemed to fit perfectly with the nature of the Orlesians. Cullen can deal, just like any of the other advisors or companions could deal. None of them are fragile. Well, Cole is sort of fragile, but not about that.

Eh. When I was a waiter at TGI Fridays we has to wear "flair" and I had a button that said "bad boy". I had a middle age woman say "I bet you are real naughty" and grabbed my ass when I was carrying trays of food. It was annoying but just shrugged it off. I didn't see anything overly egregious here than would have crossed the line to where I would be outraged like OP.

He knew what he was getting into and the stakes were a lot higher than a $10 tip...

I took personal offence from it.

What, is my Inquisitor not handsome enough to have groupies around?

Ah, but then I'd have to say 'what makes you think I can't deal with this myself?' and it would be all awkward.

Was it an uncomfortable situation for the guy? Sure, yeah. He's pretty much uncomfortable with most types of attention.

Am I ready to make the leap into 'sexual harassment' territory? Not really.

I felt sorry for him but really no one did him any harm, he is a grown up man after all and a Commander of Inquisition's forces, I'm sure he can handle a few Orlesian nobles. Maybe.

It’s a fictional situation but the idea that ‘grown-up men’ aren’t allowed to feel vulnerable is another toxic product of patriarchy.

It could be an intensely uncomfortable situation. While women are in general more vulnerable simply being physically less formidable than the harasser, in this situation the vulnerability is created coercively; Cullen is under considerable pressure to not do anything to embarrass the Inquisition, so even though he could easily extricate himself—physically, if need be—he can’t. Classic power differential abuse.

Anyway, anyone thinking Dragon Age is dark fantasy hasn’t played or read The Witcher… :)

Cullen isn't supposed to enjoy it, that's the joke.  Cullen is shy and cannot handle being around "loose" people. Remember his blushing at the thought of interrogating the whores at the Blooming Rose?

Cullen was placed in a situation where people are coming on to him, in a way he can't handle, like most things outside of battle. It was harassment,  but not dangerous or worth getting all heated up over. There's no need to save him or issue a call to arms at BW about double standards.
