Was anyone else bothered by the nobles' treatment of Cullen at the ball?

You jest, but yes. In Cullen's situation he should suck it up and be a "man". If he can't handle a little slap and tickle, I want a new General.

The butt grab was out of bounds. I don't think that part was funny at all, but it shows the power distance between Cullen and the other guests at the ball. He was treated like a piece of meat, and to corner him to a wall? Geez, poor guy.

I for one do not like being touched anywhere if I had just met the person. On a side note, when I played volleyball we grabbed/smacked/pinched each other's butts like no tomorrow. Granted this was in varsity where the group of girls knew each other for at least a year, so I thought it was OK and real fun.

You know, sometimes flirting is just that, flirting. You don't need to turn every instance of unrequited love into some dreary Lifetime drama film of sexual harassment.

They were flirting at him, he's well within his means to tell them no. And it's pretty well understood that Orlesians are outright obsequious when they want to get something.

It seems some people define sexual harassment as being flirted by someone you're not attracted to. Stop blowing things out of proportion.

Very, very well said.  I wish I could Like this twice.

Without this thread I would have no way of knowing military service makes men magically immune to sexual harassment. Time to sign up, I guess.

The point isn't that this shouldn't be in the game. I enjoyed it's inclusion because it did make me uncomfortable, and I was looking for a way to help Cullen. Just because someone is a strong, experienced, even capable male military leader doesn't mean they can't be sexually harassed. The man had his ass grabbed; that's assault. It clearly made him uncomfortable. That doesn't make him less of a military commander: it makes him a human.

That so many people failed to see this as assault because he's a man or a military leader is depressing. Assault happens to everyone. Different people handle it differently and some instances are less severe than others but that doesn't make it okay.

For the record, I enjoyed the inclusion. It made sense in the context of the story and it was handled well. It's just a pity to see its reception was largely as O.P. said: a joke.

I for one would have liked the option to deal with them.

  1. Tell the harassing nobles off directly. They leave Cullen alone but results in court disapproval.
  2. Gather dirt on the nobles and blackmail them to leave. They leave Cullen alone and results in court approval but will take longer to do.

Really ?

As a straight man, I am going to test this out in the real world on a woman. I will aggressively flirt with her and may "accidentally" touch her bottom as part of the flirting.

Let me tell you what will happen...

If I am lucky, I will be reprimanded severely and sent to some ridiculous feminist sexuality indoctrination course.

if I am not lucky, I will be registered as a sex offender, my whole life would be screwed since my name will be one such a list and I have to still go to the ridiculous feminist sexuality indoctrination course.

You know what is flirting ? What you do with Josephine before you kiss her....when you sweet talk with her and compliment her...That is what is accepted as flirting...

My goodness people get over yourselves, This is a series that has allowed us to sell children souls to demons , sell people into slavery, murder innocents yet you get up in arms because someone has had their butt grabbed? saying this is ridiculous would be an understatement.

If you think anyone says they're immune, I think you missed the point. We saw it. We saw it all, and we weren't impressed.

No they aren't immune. But in Cullen's case, it's not that big a deal, not in this situation. Not saying you are, but some people like to make sexual "harassment" this blanket thing that's equally terrible for everyone when it's really not.

Truth is, guys and gals don't respond to things the same way. We are different.

And as for military men, they're civilians. He can handle himself. Doesn't mean he's immune, it means he can endure. As a man, this wouldn't get to me.

Whilst i found the scenario funny. But then maybe i'm ok with someone pinching my bum in the right situation/mood/etc.

Imagine the uproar if the Genders were reversed. Gaming is in this weird spot where certain things in other forms of entartainment are OK , but because the player can interact with the world in the content of this media form...Pick up the pitch forks! Go GET EM!!

Personally i think creators are/should be allowed to create anything they want. Gaming is protected under the 1st amendment i believe , and is/should be protected elsewhere also.

We need to stop being offended by everything , ive seen stuff on the big screen that would make any Internet Puritan froth at the mouth. Why does gaming suffer so compared to other media?

Hate to say it, but there is a difference in this between males and females.

(Disclaimer: I'm NOT saying that it makes it okay, or that a man shouldn't be bothered.)

But look at it like this. A man is objectified all the time, even by the very women saying objectification of women is wrong. We WANT to be objectified. We like women looking at us like pieces of sexual meat. Women cooing over us of all sorts typically is enjoyable. See an old lady pinch a man's ass, it's cute. See an old man do it to a young woman, he's a disgusting creep.

Thing is, it's not just others making this hypocrisy ok, but us guys ourselves. Unwanted sexual attention doesn't come with much risks for a guy, because even if we could get raped for instance, which does happen of course, but not very commonly, we're not the ones stuck with the baby, and we can take our genes elsewhere immediately, whereas vice versa, a woman's stuck with a child for 9 months and if she survives the birth only then can try again, with no guarantee the man that raped her would help protect her and the child, or support them after the birth. So naturally even in our ancient times, female objectification came with more risks than male objectification, which we seeked, because we needed to be seen as a worthy mate.

Bringing this back to this situation, it's okay to have a little fun with the hypocrisy of taking this "harassment" lightly, because men and women AREN'T the same, and we all secretly know it. If Cullen truly didn't like the attention, enough that he felt so bad about it, dude would just leave.

I guarantee the majority of guys do not think about harassment as others do, because it's not usually harassment to us.

We're different. An unattractive woman or any woman flirting with us when we're not interested isn't threatening. It's annoying at best. For a woman, it's much different.

All of those things are obviously bad. That they are bad doesn't make (mild) sexual harassment okay. I personally am not "up in arms" but I think it's ridiculous we can all collectively agree slavery and those other things are bad, but when someone says "Hey, a man got harassed, that sucked right?" The most popular response wasn't "Yeah that sucked." It was "Shut up, he can take it."

Not that I'm surprised or anything.

LOL there are countless examples of immoral acts performed in the DA series, we could go on for days about them but no no surely a man getting his butt grabbed trumps all of them.

My issue isnt that sexual harassment isnt bad, not at all , but i have issue with people whining about it in a game like Dragon Age given its content.

My issue is we are taking real world context into a fantassy 'medeival' world. I would have thought the issues of sexism/harassment wouldn't have been seen as an issue in those times , be it male or female. But creators have to walk carefully around the 'I am offended' crowd

Lol, what country do you live in? Because that is pretty excessive.

Anyway, not everyone is the same, we all have a different limit on what we can take. Maybe it is because I was raised predominantly by males, but a little bit of ass grabbing wouldn't bother me. I'd most likely blush, smile awkwardly and try not to laugh especially if it was trying to be passed off as an "accident". Grab my chest and I will probably punch you in the throat though.  :D

Yes I was jesting but my point was that if the sexes were reversed, people would not take it lightly.

Game developers can make whatever they want to make in their games, it is their prerogative.

My point is about the double standard that not only infects gaming but the world in general.

If it is okay for a bunch of women and men to ogle, flirt, bum pinch...essentially harass...a man in a specific social setting an get away with it....Then it must be okay for a bunch of men and women to ogle, flirt, bum pinch...essentially harass...a woman in a specific social setting and get away with it...I want this to be the case...

I just want true equality for everyone...Not selective equality...

Even if cullen was a woman I still wouldn't be offended. I just don't feel that a flirty noble in a video game pinching some ones butt. Is terrible sexual harassment for either gender. But if the person it was done to felt like it was then I would back them up if they wanted it.

Way to be a presumptuous ass.

It's in my quote. Things are just different for men and women in society and even in biology. People who deny that, are denying evolution. Flirting isn't threatening to us, because men want to be objectified. We want to be judged for our usefulness, our attractiveness. It doesn't matter who, not as much, because we are not as vulnerable.

Women however, it's not the same. Like I said already, if a ugly man does it, or an old man does it, they call him creepy. Because if we were out of society, out of civilization, there'd be any even greater risk for rape. There's still a risk for rape. That is how they respond through evolution. Because a rape comes with the risks to their health and well being from pregnancy from a man with faulty genes that probably won't even support her or protect her during or after pregnancy. Men don't have to think about that. Women do. And they still do, even if they aren't aware of it.

We all like to be objectified, actually. That's what it means to be sexy. But, like I said. That's more risky for women than it is for men.

I answered this already in my post above, but long story short, you better get ready to just except double standard sometimes. They're not going anywhere, and a lot of the time, they exist for actual practical reasons that people just don't want to consider because they are unfair. But men were not created equal. Contrary to popular belief.
