Was anyone else bothered by the nobles' treatment of Cullen at the ball?

Actually, if someone did that to Cassandra, she'd make sure they lost that hand.

If I have daughters, I'm going to cut the middle man and just get them licenses to carry for a worst case scenario. It is different for women, but that doesn't mean run around being afraid of your own shadow or overreacting. If this was Cassandra and not Cullen, I in character would be looking to man handle the one who touched her ass right off a balcony, but would it bother me enough to make a thread about it? Lol, no.

Lol, I think Cass would be quite willing and capable of doing that for herself. But the intent is sweet.  :P

A gun can be taken away with brute strength, the knowledge to dislocate your shoulder or break your arm cannot.

They don't need to know all that. Pinch, squeeze or hit their balls, scratch at the eyes, hit for the temple, or pinch the **** out of the nerve by the armpit, and anyone can get out of being grabbed just fine. That doesn't take any skill to know.

Fighting knowledge is surely valuable, but if you're doing it right, you'll never be in a situation where you let someone get that close in the first place. Concealed weapons of any kind are gonna be a lot more reliable than trying to badass your way out of something, especially if you're a woman, since women have a very big disadvantage in strength.

I said the same thing when I got there and a friend mentioned it. Then suddenly the porn just found me. And once you find it, it never leaves, lol. Pandora's Box.

There's a difference between 'this makes me uncomfortable' and 'things that make me uncomfortable should be banned.' Especially when the thing that makes someone uncomfortable (sexual harassment and assault) isn't 'explored' or a narrative theme as it is used for laughs. Which goes from 'creative freedom' to 'creepy crass,' which is all the OP was raising. They were uncomfortable, trying to express it, and wondering if they were alone in that feeling. Unless you know this person personally, that hardly strikes me as 'their perpetual quest to get offended on behalf of others.'

I think Dean has the right idea.  While the scene didn't bother me much at all, I can definitely see why some felt uncomfortable about it.  I don't see anyone demanding that situations like this should be removed or banned.

And to everyone else, sure I get you personally feeling uncomfortable a bit, or if it simply reminds you of some bad time or something, but people making more out of it than that?

If you are romancing him, you can offer some 'moral support' in sympathetic words and ask him if he wants to dance with you later (giving him a breather from the attention).  While not a full out rescue, since the Inquisitor is there to prevent an assassination, not for social purposes, it is something, an acknowledgement of his situation and his resolve to see it through. And he seems quite relieved to have his attention diverted for a moment by his lady.

He gets grabbed by both a man and a woman over the course of the night.  I tend to be a bit obsessive about gathering things in the game, running around in circles at the ball, hitting search over and over and passed by him several times, looking for gossip, halla statues and coins, and I've heard him respond to both in the same game.

While awkward, and he admits he's not comfortable in the situation, he seems to be a trooper, keeping his focus on the problem they are there for, giving his all for the cause.  No less than I'd expect from him.

While this is nice and all... in the idea of the story, I'm using him and the other members of the Inquistion as a devergence to prevent an assassination attempt on a Empire leader.

Andraste on an almond biscuit.

It is not a problem. S*** needed to get done, it’s medieval, it’s Orlais, yada yada yada. That’s fine. Nobody is arguing about that (except in the profusion of strawmen that this thread suffers).

The point is that it’s not an okay thing to do. Even though it’s a part of the game (and The Game) that we all accept, it can still make somebody uneasy—and that’s a good, compassionate thing. Furthermore, there have been some regrettable attitudes about harassment that I’m afraid extend into real life.

Seriously. People think pampered nobles acting like pampered nobles around a guy with a big sword is horrible, while upstairs in the same map, servants are being murdered by the dozens. That does make me fear for humanity.

I'm pretty sure most people realise that harassment isn't okay. At the end of the day, though, it's happening in a game. It's a completely fictional event. I've been stabbed - and that was an incredibly traumatic event to go though. I can handle seeing fictional characters go through the same thing, however, and separate reality from fiction.

If other people can't do that then maybe they shouldn't be investing in DA:I until they've dealt with their own issues. As harsh as it may sound to some the world really shouldn't bend over backwards to accommodate overly sensitive individuals. It stifles creativity and the game is quite clearly marketed as containing mature themes so it's not as if there's no warning.

Me too, if you’re talking about people who can only hold one single thought in their head at one time.

Why do you act as though someone’s claimed to be horribly traumatized or demanded the game be burned or something?

I guess it’s time to vacate this thread too.

I'm simply responding to the language being used by some of the people who are seemingly incapable of separating reality from fiction. If this sort of thing happened in the real world then it'd be a matter of concern. Yet it didn't happen in the real world, it happened in a fictional setting - so if people are feeling very unsettled and feel the need to constantly point out that it 'isn't okay' despite that being pretty obvious then I believe they'd be better off investing in a game that doesn't market itself as fairly gritty and designed for mature adults.

Tell that to Ronda Rousey.

I will ;) Male muscles developing differently than females to make them stronger's a fact of life. There was a video of this woman with huge arms losing strength tests to average looking dudes and I was rather amazed at how much of that muscle on her seemed useless. Not that a woman can't beat a man in a close up fight. My mom has, lol, but averagely, that isn't something I'd feel safe letting my girls rely on. Ronda Rousey fights in a setting where there are rules.

I kinda thought it was part of the long running joke that "Cullen is just there to look pretty". And as others said, a bit of homage to the Cullenites.

I guess what is offending you is that it was sexual harassment that wasn't taken seriously?

Yes, but I just think there are ways to do that without veering close to or into "sexual harassment is funny" territory. Do you know the party banter between Varric and Solas about who's toughest -- Cassandra, Josephine or Leliana, with Cullen not being up for consideration? That made me laugh because it combines a poke at the character and possibly his fans with a snark at how the sole (if that) token female character is treated in most stories.

Or that if it had been a woman in Cullen's place it never would have made it out of the cutting room?

Given how commonplace harassment (and worse) of women and the accompanying victim-blaming is, I actually doubt that a gender reversal would not be considered hilarious by many, too.

It's a video game. It's rated M. We all know violence shouldn't be used as the end all be all to every situation but you don't seem offended by any of that in the game?

I really don't understand this tendency to deflect or shut down criticism of certain issues by pointing out that there's worse things in-game or IRL. One can talk about topic Z without going over A-Y first. Besides, the violent situations and solutions in most games are pretty far removed from what most of us actually experience in our lives. Sexual harassment and sexual violence are not.

Again: I am not saying this is the worst thing ever. I am not saying the harassment shouldn't be there, or is badly-written -- it's actually grimly realistic, that is why I felt immediate sympathy for the guy. But the combination of "watch a colleague/friend under my command be harassed in a situation where he's totally out of his element and can't afford to make waves" and "am I supposed to laugh at this" feels uncomfortable. I'd be curious to hear the writers' take on the whole thing, including Cole's reaction. Did they both intend to give Cullen fans another nudge-wink and encourage us to look at the squickier stuff beneath?

I dunno if you guys remember, but ages ago David Gaider spoke a scene/moment in the game that came across as a bit "rapey"/dodgy so they had to rewrite it or change it to be less so? Perhaps was the encounter in question?

Good question. I'm wondering what scene they meant, it'd be interesting to hear which it is and what it originally looked like before they changed it.

I felt bad for Cullen in a "Haha, that sucks" way, not "Awww poor baby." Seriously, if a grown man actually gets emotionally upset over this, I'm just going to laugh.

My money is on it referring to Cole, actually. There's nothing particularly 'rapey' about the sexual harassment at the ball, but Cole is a giant walking picture of violation of consent.

Cole's actions cross over into territory that could very reasonably be called 'mind rape.' It is extremely intrusive, a violation of privacy and self, and Cole will not only do it (repeatedly) without invitation, but also in direct violation of consent and explicit refusals on the part of his subject. It is frequently framed in terms of 'his target deserves it,' regardless of what the target's view is, and occasionally causes real emotional distress to the recipients. That Cole is obsessed with doing so, to the point that people in (Solas) and out (fans) of the game argue that preventing him from doing so would make him a demon and do even worse, makes less of a defense of his habits and more of blackmail and veiled threats about why people shouldn't object.

Considering some of Cole's interactions with Sera, I think that makes a far, far stronger claim to the 'rapey' incident than the ball.

Sexual harassment- a real problem for women, but inconsequential and trivial for any real man.

I figured it was supposed to be a bit of a joke/jibe towards us Cullenites, which I find amusing if that's the case. But yeah, I do feel bad for the guy especially if you bring along Cole who then tells you that Cullen feels like he's being hunted and doesn't belong in that sort of environment.

Wow, I literally just wrote a post on the Solas thread about those comments. I was assuming it was a Solas sex scene, with him being... who he is, and all.

Geez, the Orlesians mobbing Cullen is not rapey, and if that's really what Cole is referring to, then Cullen is frankly pathetic. I don't think he is pathetic. This thread, on the other hand...
