Not necessarily bad, but indifferent tier: Cullen and Solas. Mostly the latter. I sometimes felt like wringing his neck more than anything else.

I though Vivienne was unanimously considered God tier because of her high DPS and Sheild/Spirit Sword Combo.

But besides her, I use Cassandra. Her buffs pretty much turns everyone into Tank Cannons.

Best: Cullen, Cassandra, Dorian (although I think he suffers from his personal quest; it feels awkwardly shoehorned into the lore. I think they could have addressed the themes they did in a way that fit Thedas as we know it better)

Good: Iron Bull, Varric, Solas

OK: Cole, Josephine, Leliana

Not OK: Sera (talk about ducking all responsibility in life ...), Blackwall (I'm not talking about his personal quest although that adds a lot of depth. I am referring to the fact that I frequently forget about him.)

Bad: Vivienne (so annoying/uninteresting that I frequently stop talking to her as soon as she takes up residence on her balcony

I was really indifferent to many of these characters.

With the understanding that I haven't played through all romances / side quests yet...

 

God Tier:  Not sure I can go that far with anyone.  And don't get me wrong, I liked most everyone.

 

Romance Tier:  Josie, my little Antivan minx.  Though when they kiss it looks like my Qunari Quizzy is trying to eat her face.

 

Top Tier:  Varric - My kind of dude. Never fails to have a smart ass response when the situation calls for it.  Dorian - We're homies.  After making his sexual preferences known in his side quest, he didn't demand that I accept it, and after my Quizzy said something to the effect of "spare me the details", we were bros because I tried to help him.  Sera - She's adorable and funny.  I love her.  I wish I had the ability to romance her.  Cullen - Good, virtuous dude you can trust with your life.  Cass - I love her also.  Behind that crusty exterior is a passionate woman who is as hard on herself as she is on everyone else.

 

Good Tier:  Vivvy - Seemed pretty virtuous if a little one-note, and she got along great with my Quizzy.  Leli - Still hot as animated characters go and a bit wiser since Origins, but she had a little more of an edge to her than I was comfortable with.  Bull - Funny, reliable ally.  Didn't blow me away.

 

Average Tier:  Cole - I didn't even recruit him in my main playthrough.  I booted him.  Worried he'll be more trouble than he's worth.  I've yet to play through far enough in a secondary playthrough to find out.  Blackwall - I didn't dislike the guy, just felt he was very wooden and uninteresting.

 

Bad Tier:  Solas - Sorry, Solas fans.  I've posted this elsewhere, but I found him to be smarmy, condescending, and a total jerk.  Frankly, I wish his and Dorian's punch-out animations had been switched, because knocking him flat on his back would have been quite satisfying.

Sera was far away the best companion of this game, and probably my favorite bioware companion.  Leliana was awesome as usual not much to say here.  For my good tier all of them were interesting and had awesome dialog/banter.  For my average tier it consists of Solas and Cullen who I found to be boring for most of the game.  Solas had a lot of cutscenes but still found him to be meh, almost like a walking codex.  Cole was my least favorite companion, I didn't bring him along at all which probably colors my perception of him, but with Sera always in my party and Varric always being a bro its a hard sell to fit him in over anyone else really.

Somehow the show was stolen by the newer companions, and Varric I felt a little bit lacking in terms of character depth despite his revelations bout himself. I just felt disconnected. Cole, Blackie, Chuckles, those are based on both character (yes, I explored Blackie's character) and combat viability, although Cassy, Dorian and Sera came close.

 

Didn't dislike anyone enough to put on bad tier, although the veteran characters especially Hawke, felt kinda out of character. I guess 10 years did to him, and I can relate to the changes made for the veteran characters but still, they felt lacking. Even though my sarcastic!Hawke is particularly aggressive... his snarky-ness is lacking, he used to be top tier SARCASTIC and funny in DA2... even for the worst situations. But like I said, time changes people, I guess.

Good Tier: Josephine, Cullen, Leliana (on the low end of "good" this time ... she see-saws too much in her personality)

Average Tier: Blackwall (he actually sits somewhere between "average" and "good")

Bad Tier: Iron Bull, Vivienne, Sera

 

I'm pretty satisfied overall, despite not liking these last three at all -- the game makes up for that by giving me my two new all-time favourites. Cass and Cole are beyond awesome.

My ultimate bias Cole. Enough said. As for Leli... sigh, though I might like how she was hardened, it felt wrong. Yet with her unhardened ending, it also felt too perfect. I don't dislike her, I just wish I could improve her outfit design. Same with Cullen, only a few parts of his outfit though.

I'm a bit conflicted with Leli, I don't hate her, I'm just kinda sick of seeing her. I have incredibly mixed feelings towards Sera, she's a fun character, but it's so hard to have an actual conversation when she'll just call you stupid if you disagree with anything she says.

Cassandra -- surprised me with how much I love her

Dorian -- dat mustache and the whole Tevinter thing

Sera -- please stop mentioning "the little people"

Varric -- a shadow of his former self

Leliana -- ehh she okay

Josephine -- I would need to be high on something to enjoy talking to her
