I've been trying to do a solo run (only on normal, I know my limits :) ) with a Rogue Archer, currently lvl 10 & going with assassin spec and I'm having pretty good success.  However, in running the Templar Hold quest and after numerous tries I had to knock down the difficulty to the lowest setting to get by solo.

I'm thinking of running mostly solo but I want to sometimes take 1 companion and I'm thinking a mage.  I know if I take a tank it will probably be easier than I want it to be.

So, the question, is a rogue and mage duo viable to end game and if so what spec would you recommend for the mage?

rogue and mage work pretty well on nightmare duo.

What spec on mage ? It depends what spec of your rogue. Generally you wont be wrong with Rift one (Solas). but any mage work, really.

How are you finding not being able to 'bash' destructible obstacles or 'energise' various lights/collapsed platforms?

I really like the idea of limiting my party, but the presence of these rather puts me off - implying I absolutely need a mage, warrior and rogue in the party at all times...

Just for the solo-ish aspect of it, I'd go with Sera. And the DPS you get from Assassin + Tempest is just nuts.

There doesn't seem to be any energizing, smashing or lock picking necessary for the main storyline. Of course it means you'll miss out on some loot, and possibly some side quests.

I actually like a lot of the going solo aspect.  Fights are harder and longer and I have to think about what I'm doing.  I sometimes actually run out of healing potions, something I wasn't finding with full group.  As to missing bashing and mage energy thingy, I mostly do not miss it at all.  Although I did take a mage back to a cleared area to pick up the rune.

Also some "bashable" stuff I have found can be done with a bow, such as the red lyrium nodes.

What I do miss is the banter, so I do a lot of talking to the companions when I'm back in Haven and I am running 4 different characters most with at least 3 companions.

Explosive shot also takes care of barriers, like those in front of the pits you need to burn in the Exalted Plains.
