Like probably the majority of people on here I read up every scrap of info i could pre-launch (though I did steer clear of any major spoilers). As such went into the game expecting to like certain characters more than others, expecting to want to romance certain characters first etc. As it turned out, I ended up being wrong about quite a bit. Just thought I'd share a few of mine and ask if anyone else had the same experience.

Solas: Thought he seemed fine but wasn't terribly interested in him. Once i started playing he pretty quickly became one of my favorite characters. And that was before the post credit scene. Currently doing an fem elf playthrough just to romance him.

Sera: Probably the character I had least interest in pre-launch, but i love her. I know a lot of people really don't like her but I thinks she's funniest character so far in the DA series.

Iron Bull: Turned out to be a lot more interesting than i was expecting - thought he'd be a sort of one note character. Yet to romance him but now will at some point for sure.

Dorian: Easily the character I most excited about, and while i like him, I'm not as crazy about him as I expected.

I thought Iron Bull and Sera would be more interesting, but both failed to live up to my expectations. Sera just came across as very irritating and Iron Bull's 'me smash' mentality has been done to death elsewhere so I didn't find him particularly compelling.

The other characters, however, all met my expectations and I'm very satisfied with them.

Fiona was very disappointing.

I wanted to annihilate the Templar disease.

Instead, I ended up pitying them.

Red Templardom is a fate I would not wish on my worst enemy.

Which is the Templars, normally.

With you on the Templar's. Tend to be very pro mage in my 'canon' playthrough but like you say, pretty hard not to end up pitying them

I'm with you guys on the templars. They ended up being very tragic characters whereas in past games I don't feel much pity for them.

Solas I didn't expect to like and now I can't go anywhere without him.

I didn't expect much out of Dorian either, being Tevinter and all, but I love going to talk to him and he reminds me of my real life gay best friend who also loves to flirt with women.

Vivienne seemed to be far more relevant to the plot than she ended up really being.

I was probably least excited about Dorian. He seemed pompous (he still is) and that awful mustache. However I wasn't prepared for how funny he is or how sympathetic I would be to him as a character. He's one of my favorites now.

Everyone assumed Vivienne had this big hidden agenda.

And it's hilarious SHE DOESN'T.

She's just hitching her wagon to yours because it's going places.

Which she says upfront.

I actually tried to avoid a lot of the trickled-in pre-release content because I didn't want to make a lot of assumptions and feel the long wait. So I didn't know a whole lot about any of the characters.

From what little I did see, I ended up not liking Iron Bull as much as I thought I would. He may not be a typical Qun, but he doesn't feel so different than a regular mercenary brute. Meh. I found myself far more attracted to Solas and Dorian than I expected. Personally really does make a huge difference. I was really surprised by how brutal Leliana had become. "The people are sheep," Leliana? Wow.

My pre-game expectations of Iron Bull, Sera, Cole and Solas were pretty wrong.

I had a very negative impression of Iron Bull going in. I thought he was going to be big dumb brute, and it the trailers made me think he would have nothing to contribute beyond one-note sex jokes. (Also I hated James Vega in Mass Effect and was afraid he might be a similar dumb-frat-jock *******). I am so happy to be so wrong! I loved his interactions with the Chargers and his doubts about the Qun. He was so much kinder, thoughtful, and interesting than I would have guessed.

On the other hand, I though sera was going to be a lot of fun, and wound up absolutely hating her. I don't find her funny at all. She is childish, hypocritical, and just plain mean. I doubt I will recruit her in future playthroughs.

Solas and Cole interested me in the lead-up to the game, but I utterly underestimated how much I would love them. I hang on their every word, clicking them incessantly to make sure I didn't miss anything, replay their conversations to make sure I'm understanding all the subtext, and just to hear the often beautiful dialog again. (I had planned to romance Cullen, but Solas pulled the rug right out from under my feet and I fell hard)

Hahahahahahaha, me either! I try to mix up my party to get to know everyone, but every time I go somewhere without Solas, there is inevitably a moment where I think "aw, I bet Solas would have had something really interesting to say here..."

Not sure, I think Iron Bull is the only one because he turned out to not just be a meathead.

I didn't follow the development too closely. Week of game launch I was tweeting about how I was going to romance this cueball head elf with an attachment to spandex but I hoped he'd be interesting. I definitely got my wish and then some. His banters with Cole are fantastic. Those convos remind me of Mordin which were some of my favorite dialogues in ME2.

I'm surprised I haven't used Varric much. I liked him in DA2 but now he seems a little vanilla compared to the other options so I don't use him much after the first part of the game, and his personal quest was kind of meh.

I expected to be buddies with Dorian and that's pretty much the case. Cassandra surprised me by being more well-rounded and likeable than I'd been expecting.

I was expecting to like Bull more than I did. I just didn't click with him and I didn't care for his romance.

I wasn't expecting to end up liking Cassandra as much as I did (I honestly did not have much opinion on her before hand and I thought I would be using Bull more than her)

Solas was also a real surprise, I did not find him interesting going into the game, but he definitely was.

Dorian was even better than I expected and I had high expectations for him.

Sera and iron bull are the 2 that really surprised me. For Sera I figured I would like her but I did not expect to go all batshit ****** nuts over her. I mean I literally had her in my party for the entire game except like 2 side areas.

I hated iron bull prelaunch. All the promotional crap painted him as a giant toolbag. Especially the trailer. But ingame I thought he was a pretty cool dude. His whole Qun perspective was awesome as well.

I thought I would hate Cullen because of his views, but I ended up liking him well enough (Vivienne took his role instead...). I also ended up liking Cole more than expected; Blackwall and Iron Bull were a bit disappointing.

Red Templardom is a fate I would not wish on my worst enemy.

It's certainly a grim fate, but playing the mage storyline I can't say I felt very sorry for them...mostly because Lambert was the one who started the war, and the more reasonable templars (like Lysette or Rylen for example) seem to have left the order at that point. There is also some letter where one templar writes that he took the red lyrium to clean the disease of mages ot something...I find it hard to feel sorry for such a person.

Who knew beneath that fierce exterior she was such a big softie? I'd have to add her to my preconceptions list that did not turn out. I thought I had her pegged after DA 2 and Dawn of the Seeker as a hard-ass but she very much isn't. The surprise is that it's been Leliana whose taken that role!

I also was pleasantly surprised by Cassandra. I had nothing against her beforehand, nonetheless she revealed herself to be a trustful, caring, dependable friend, with admirable strength of mind. I think Cassandra and Josephine protect the Inquisitor and worry about his/her well-being like big sisters.

I didn't read up much on the game before it came out on purpose. I remember hearing a lot of good things about IB and have felt kind of disappointed by him. I guess that's because I seem to have the banter bug with him. Even took him with me for my first dragon kill and I was slightly disappointed after all the raving I heard about him being epic.

I found Cassandra and Dorian to be the biggest surprises for me. I love their characters and they feel the closest friendwise to my inquisitor. I was really happy with how Cullen romance was done. I remember him running away when you tried to flirt with him in DA:O, so it's nice to see him finally get his happy ending!

I didn't think I'd like Viv but it turns out I REALLY don't like Viv. I want to dump her in the mud, every time she opens her mouth to insult people. I didn't like Sera at first but the more I listened to Viv, the more I like Sera, esp because she'll prank Viv. Go Sera! Viv gave me a greater appreciation of Sera.  :)

Characters who were good surprises:

Sera: she's both ridiculously adorable and ridiculously infuriating at times, and I love it.  I was kind of eh on her character before the game launched, and now I love her.  And sometimes want to chuck cookies at her.

Leliana: I liked her in DA:O and DA2, but she was never a character who particularly stuck out to me in the cast.  I adore DA:I Leliana, in both her hardened and softened incarnations.  It takes a little digging, and I think her character suffers if you don't do the Calpernia storyline and get more of her dialogue, but I love her in this game.

Solas: Christ on a ******, was I ever wrong about this guy.  He really is scotch bonnet candies.  I followed the DA:I hype for almost a year before the game, and I thought Solas would just be a sweet, dorky Fade nerd.  So very, very wrong and I'm so excited to see what he does next.

Warden!Alistair:  I replayed DA:O before DA:I came out, and Alistair is such a dope in that game.  Fast forward ten years, and the dude's an utter badass while managing to retain that Alistair-ish charm.  So glad my Amell stuck with him, even if it cost me Hawke  :(

Bad surprises:

Fiona: I wouldn't say I ever *liked* Fiona as a character, but I could at least respect her in the novels.  I hated her in DA:I, and I don't get the feeling that she's a character who was "meant" to be hated like Petrice.  I can make Alexius Tranquil and exile the Wardens and judge Florianne's remains in a box, but I can't lay a hand on the woman who sold the mage rebellion to Tevinter.  Awesome  <_<

Corypheus:  Sorry.  I just...don't find him as compelling as he was in Asunder.  He was scarier as just the "Elder One" at the beginning, a nebulous menace that couldn't really be engaged.  The rest of the game is basically just Quizzy and co. running circles around him.  I never felt threatened after I got Skyhold, and that's...not a good sign in your god-to-be villain.

I didn't think I would care much about Cole, but I ended up loving him.

I thought I would hate Cullen a lot, but I ended up just mildly disliking him.

I didn't think I would like Cassandra, but shes actually one of my favourite characters now.

And yeah I also thought Vivienne would be more important to the plot, I was kind of disappointed with how underused she was used, she didn't really feel like part of the group and didn't go through much character development.
