I should have been more specific and adjusted my wording there. There is no specified bill of rights in the UK like there is in the United States.

 

This is the primary reason I'd never move to the UK. People get jailed for mean tweets over there. It's a nanny state taken to the extreme.

 

I'm a big fan of western Europe. I love the history, cultures, and languages, but there's not a single one of those nations that I'd want to live in. The social issues that are bad about America to me, are even worse in Europe.

News organisations report the worst. If there is a murder in your town, they report that. Otherwise, they report the enarest murder to your town. If there is a disaster, they report that. What gets lost is scale. Europe has a population of 740,000,00 according to Wikipedia. That's a lot. The USA has a population of 316,000,000 according to Wikipedia. That's a lot of people. They are both quite large in area. Canada and Australia have much smaller populations spread over very large areas, but the population are confined to a relatively small area.

The upshot of all this is that we tend to think of other countries as just like ours, only foreign. A Dane, for example, knows that the US is different, but really has no idea of the vastness of it all, unless he or she has been here or to Russia. Similarly, Americans (including Canadians) typically have no idea how densely populated the Netherlands are.

While there are a lot of homicides in the US, they are still, statistically, quite rare. Likewise, while there are 'no go' areas outside Paris, for police, they are small in comparison to the size of the country and easily avoided. News reporters tend to compress time and space and overgeneralize. New York and Toronto are not to the US and Canada what London and Paris are to England and France. Just ask anyone from Vancouver.

All that being said, the Halifax to Vancouver train journey is well worth doing. There is no US equivalent.

People don't really get jailed for mean tweets here, is usually if its threatening or slanderous & even then its usually just a fine unless the msg was incredibly nasty

Neo-Nazis in Germany are a joke, even in the US they're a bigger problem.

Sure. But it's different in Germany. There, it is a crime to wear a swastika or even use certain gestures linked to Hitler. I'm of the mind that people should have the right to express themselves freely without fear of being arrested.

Whether or not you find this stuff offensive, this isn't stuff that people should get jailed over or even fined for imo.

In that case, Christianity and the cross should be banned in Germany since it too is linked to mass murder on a scale even greater than that of Nazi Germany.

I'm not sure if Riven326 is American, but unprohibited expression of all ideas is part of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Americans tend to take pride in that freedom, regardless of content.

This question is directed at Americans of course but anyone feel free to chime in.

Anyway, let's say your situation here starts to deteriorate for whatever reason. Maybe jobs are really scarce, you don't approve of the direction the country is going, you're just tired of it here, etc. the reason is not really important. But whatever it is, it's enough that you don't wanna live here anymore. Would you move to another country? Where would you go? Why would you move there?

It would depend on the reasons.

If I felt jobs were scarce, I'd wonder what field/area I was looking in, since there are job shortages in many of the developed countries right now.

If it was due to a feeling of the country going in the wrong direction, it would depend on which direction I thought was bad. High debt to GDP ratio? Larger government? More social programs? Legalization of drugs? Allowing gays to marry? Corrupt politicians? High taxes? In nearly all of these issues, America is BEHIND (or ahead, depending on perspective) in many cases to most other industrialized countries.


So unless you'd like to have a job as an unskilled laborer in a developing country, I'm not sure leaving would solve any problems... but again, it would depend on the exact reasons you are fed up with the country.

It'd be nice to go someplace where you don't have to worry about stuff like this in general. A place that's mostly homogenous in population or where everyone regardless of background still share a common identity.

The ironic thing? Even if you found such a place, you'd be viewed as an outsider for years to come. Such communities are usually not welcome to outsiders - that's why everyone is pretty homogenous and share a common identity.

It'd also be nice to get away from the rat race and sensory overload that comes with being an American citizen. Really, I feel mentally and emotionally exhausted and just wanna isolate myself, or just get in my car and drive off into the sunset.

I agree that this stinks, but it is true in other countries as well. Any place with technology and distractions can burn you out if you're not careful.


I used to do a "black out" weekend about once a year in my younger days - no TV, no computer, no cell phone, no radio; not even any books. And then just don't leave your house/apartment/what have you from Friday until Monday morning. You can have people over, but you can't go out (or, obviously, call anyone) and anyone who comes over can't stay longer than a few hours.

Total isolation and lack of stimulation. No texts, no internet, no reading, no listening... it's really therapeutic. A complete reset of your brain. Not to mention that by the end of it, you'll be begging for those distractions again.
