Sorry if this is a dumb question (or if i have missed something).

This is the first dragon age game I have ever played.

I mapped some abilities to my controller buttons when i initially had two that i could spend.

When i obtained some new weapons i switched to the new weapons and noticed that my mapped abilities are shaded out in red and that I cannot use them.  If i go back to the original weapon that you start the game with I can use them.

Is there something special that I am missing or are you only able to use the earned abilities with the weapon you originally start the game with?

Thanks.

With the Warrior and Rogue classes, the abilities in the first two trees (Weapon and Shield/Two-Handed for Warrior, Dual Wield/Archery for Rogue) all require the appropriate weapon type in order to be used. So if you started an Archer Rogue, then equip two daggers, Long Shot will be unavailable because you don't have a Bow equipped. Mages can only equip Staves so they don't have this problem. Also, while the active abilities require the appropriate weapon or weapons, passives don't. So your Archer Rogue can spend 2 points to pick up the Dual Wield passive Dance of Death, which restores 50 Stamina when you get a kill, and when they kill an enemy with an Archer ability or basic attack, they'll get the Stamina restoration even though they're using a Bow.

Read the ability descriptions. If it says "requires daggers", then it requires daggers.

Basically you don't. Considering that you cant equip 2 weapons and then swap them in combat its best to stick to one weapon type. Not to mention that you cant even re-equip skill in combat so skills that you cant use are waste of slots.

Each class have 2 different weapon types that they can use. So stick to your weapon of choice and check those tooltips better as its clearly written what uses what.
