In my experience it is difficult to keep the undead in the village from attacking the militia without using taunt or simply killing them before they can get to them. They seem to prioritize archers, which most of the militia are.

Even taunt seems to work screwy for me. I'll taunt and they'll still run at their militia target and take a swipe or two before they peel off and come back.

Lloyd's a pain in the butt to keep alive without healing. Guy thinks he's wearing full plate. Just a reminder that Wynne can heal NPC's. Once I use her and micro her heals I don't lose anyone.

It's just the way aggro works in this game. They'll still complete whatever action they have queued before switching targets.

I'm calling BS on the people who call it "a breeze" or "a cakewalk" to keep everyone alive. On nightmare, if you are 1. not high level or 2. don't lay traps at the bottom of the hill after the battle starts, it's very common to have militia dead or nearly dead before you even get down there to help them. I've seen Murdock die before I even reached the bottom of the hill, so yeah, you're full of it.

I saved everyone exception made for Lloyd which i killed with friendly fire on purpose (KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!11). If you do Redcliffe as your last quest it's easy

I'll have to try this later on next time. I usually do Redcliffe 2nd after Broken Circle and I'll have my tank running around trying to taunt everything, but usually it's just Lloyd that dies...every time.

Newsflash, not everyone plays on nightmare.  Seriously, people that play nightmare mode and then complain about the difficulty just irk me.  If it's too hard for you on nightmare, maybe don't play on nightmare?  Besides, I think most of the people that have said how easy the fight is are NOT playing on nightmare, so your whole argument just falls flat.  I kept everyone alive on hard mode when doing redcliff third, and it was quite easy.  On my first normal playthrough, I kept everyone alive while doing redcliff first, without even realizing it.  I didn't even have to try to keep the militia alive.  On the 360 (which I play on, simply because the game was a gift) it is not possible, or at least very difficult, to heal NPCs, so the belief that you must heal the NPCs to keep them alive doesn't fly either.

Different people play the game differently, just because you can't do it easily doesn't mean that other people can't either.

Won the helm of the red on my latest playthrough- the odd things was that I wasn't even trying. I was playing a high-level archer this time and scattershot is a pretty powerful tool, as is arrow of slaying. I also had Sten going as a high dex, high strength dual wield fighter with Asala reforged as a keening longsword via the Winter Forge. Sten was a freakin' beast in that playthrough, especially with Wynne keeping him going in the background.

Ok I got a question for those that have used traps... Do you set them up before the battle or during cause I tried to set them up before the battle n they weren't working. Dang undead would walk either right on the traps well they walked on them as many as I had set up lmao but the point is not 1 trap was set off... how did you do it or when?

@ Thor Rand Al : When you start this specific .. encounter, we'll call it - it seems to be on a different map. People have mentioned that setting traps was a waste of time, as they were not there during the battle. They did appear again afterwards (when it was light again) if I recall correctly. My suggestion would be to not worry about traps.

Well I don't like to start new threads so I picked this one. Just had to say how damned annoying that my allies kept standing in the burning oil! How stupid is the AI??? I tried to keep them away by charging forward and I tried to keep them away by hanging back.

So everybody died but Ser Perth (with Wynne healing). And I lost all the militia but whatever. (I play on Normal and use Easy when I am tired or on my 3rd or 4th try at something).

(second playthrough, first time didn't even know there was oil to use).

I play on the PS3 on Hard difficulty. My first time playing through, I had done the Circle Tower before Redcliffe, and my party consisted of Mage Warden, Morrigan, Sten, and Leliana. I got the Helm of the Red, and it wasn't too difficult. I had the burning oil, recruited Dwyn, got the best gear for the militia, but I totally missed Berwick and Lloyd! I didn't even go into the tavern at all until my third playthrough... somehow I missed it each time I went to Redcliffe.

Mass Paralysis, people. Learn it.  Use it.  Love it.  It trivializes many of the hardest fights in the game.  Including this one.

Anytime you get more than three or four undead beyond the barricade start casting it. Paralyze them all, leave the militia untouched.

Other than that just keep your eyes open and try to kill/catch aggro on undead before they get to the barricade.

I haven't done it on nightmare but I assume it would work there as well, though it'd be a bit iffier. On normal I ended up with everyone, including Lloyd, surviving without even having healing spells, much less using them.

Umm... Not sure what to tell you, but I only play on Nightmare now, and I never lose anyone at Redcliffe. Not a single person. I don't use traps, either. The only thing that skews things in my favor is that I don't go to Redcliffe straight away. First I pick up Shale, then I do the Circle Tower, and then I go to Redcliffe.

I always use the barrels. If you can't keep your party out of the fire, you're not managing them very well. It's easy enough to pause the game, take control of everyone, and move them away from the fire. Toggle the hold position command as needed.

Down the hill, outside the chantry: I always pause the game and check on the health of the militia, especially the named guys, first. If anybody's in serious trouble, I throw a healing spell their way. I use Shale as my tank here. Her Shout and Regenerating Burst abilties are awesome for this battle. AoE stun, taunt, and regen. I'll use Cone of Cold as much as I can, but it's hard to hit the zombies and not the militia. Mind Blast is a better option. As with everything in DA, it's much easier with multiple mages, but completely possible with only one.

That's really all there is to it. I use every AoE stun at my disposal, monitor the health of the militia, and make sure my party is well stocked on health and mana pots before I begin. I'll admit that the first few times I did Redcliffe I had a lot of trouble with it. It seemed ridiculously hard the first time I played the game, but it keeps getting easier every time I do it. Now it's a breeze.

I'm not sure if Stone Aura buffs the militia members, but I was able to win this battle pretty handily with no losses on Nightmare with Shale standing there as a buff totem (the buff covers the whole barricaded region), Wynne healing, and Leliana using Scattershot as often as possible. (my character was a 2h warrior)

Ok here is my story of this battle.

1st time by fluke I think I did it with no casualties, but then I accidently loaded an old save instead of saving doh!!!.

6 attempts later and I am banging my head on the wall. As lloyd is dead before I am even down the hill amongst others.

So reverted to save prior to both battles and setup the following on tactics.

marrigon enemy target of player mind blast - mass stun
enemy target of alistiar waking nightmare - mass stun
enemy target of player - attack (useless as she got nature staff equipped which they immune but may have done aggro still)
enemy target of player - sleep
other skils which she normally has on I left alone but probably harmful including that ice cone attack which would have done damage to militia also.

leliana

target of player - crippling shot
target of player - distraction
target of player - attack (to draw aggro)

the idea was I was running around always trying to target anyone attacking lloyd, so morrigan would then stun them, if I am lucky. I didnt make all of morrigans spells target my enemy as it would have been wasting stun attacks on enemies already stunned so one was on alistiars targets to help the other miltia.

Also I had a level up on my mage character prior to the battle unused by luck, I used the spell point on mind blast which wasnt planned for my build but helped on this battle so I had it on my mage as well as morrigan. my mage already has arcane warrior so I used a sword for the fight whichj was doing far more damage than any of my targeted spells or staff could do.

observations.

on every single attempt none of my party took any damage, the enemy AI seems pre programmed to be very aggro to the militia and lloyd.
a lot of luck involved, it seems most of the time lloyd breaks from the pack and goes alone against incoming enenemies, so is normally surrounded before you even get down the hill, if you lucky only one will be attacking him and he will survive the first few seconds, sometimes 3 can be attacking him and his fate is sealed before you can get to him.
I got the helmet with one dead militia and I think no named characters dead so it doesnt need to be perfect.
if my last attempt failed I was planning to make alistair spam taunt heavily (was set to only use it when me or allies attacked) and to enable rapid shot on laliana to try and draw aggro.
the fight with the knights at top of hill is far easier as they mainly stand and watch staying out of the way. The harder bit is where the militia is.

Huh. Just made a 2 playthrough with my Elemental Mage on Normal.
Everyone died( My party members were the only one left standing. And by everyone I mean everyone. Even Knights and their leader didn't make it o_O
