To be fair Josephine's reason to supporting Celene is rather weak. Does she realize that if the new ruler has ascended to the throne, and Celene is dead that Celene's rightful claim to the throne is forfeit.

Josephine mostly supports Celene because she has successfully ruled Orlais for years and sees no profit in ousting her. Gaspard doesn't offer the inquisitor anything you wouldn't get with Celene as well...and unlike the empress, he isn't exactly a long term planner.

And strengthening his army with a constant practice. So the moment they are done with Tevinter - they will turn on you again. Very bad plan. And even to achieve that you have to - see all above.

Well actually if you bothered to listen to the epilogue he never turns on me (the Inquisitor and the Inquisition).

Also he's older than me so it's more likely that he dies than turns on the Inquisition.

But its okay, you can keep headcanon-ing that picking Gaspard is an unequivocally bad choice in every way. The fact though is, every single choice has its pros and cons.

Finished with Tevinter?....Orlais couldn't defeat the Tevinter Imperium even with help before, is doubtful Gaspard would be able to now, would likely end with his armies getting b*tch-slapped back to the south again, would be a stupid plan

She has successfully ruled Orlais...for years until she let her country go to ****, enough for Gaspard and other nobles to become disillusioned with the empress's rule and believes it's time for a new leader to make Orlais strong again. Celene...the long term planner leader? This is the same woman who supposedly a shrewd politician, very skilled at the Game, yet she fails constantly in TME. This is the same woman who couldn't think of other ways to send a message to Orlesian nobility without risking herself, so she march to Halamshiral to quell the elven uprising without a second thought, only to be walked into Gaspard's trap and almost lose her life.

Let's face it, Celene is not the flawless leader like you made out to be, and were it not for her weakness and incompetence Gaspard and his compatriots wouldn't doubt the empress's rule and rebel in the first place.

Gaspard would lead Orlais, Ferelden and the Free Marches to ruin with his war mongering. He offers nothing, brings nothing, and has no real plan for actually ruling Orlais or gaining the support of the nobles or people. Sure he has the Chevaliers behind him, but those Chevaliers are fairly unimportant and support him more because he is militaristic even though that's the complete opposite of what Orlais needs.

Gaspard doesn't oppose Celene because he thinks he can do better, he opposes Celene because he thinks he has a chance of becoming the new ruler of Orlais.

While I fully support a French Revolution, I don't really support letting one leader die simply so the same type of leader can take the throne.

It's amusing to see people try to justify this with "Well yes Gaspard may lead the world into a horrible war BUT first he will help us with the whole old god thing so it's a wash, no biggie."

The whole old god thing that isn't really a problem. Corypheus is one of the most incompetent and nonthreatening antagonists of all time.

I never said she is flawless, but she is basically a better ruler than Gaspard could hope to be in every way. Gaspard didn't rebell because Celene was ruining the country. Orlais has never been quite so peaceful or prosperous as it is now. He rebelled because he wanted power for himself...and as your advisors point out, many chevaliers followed him because Celene tried to improve relations with Ferelden/Nevarra. They saw her as "antimilitary". But that doesn't make her weak or incompetent. As for Halamshiral, even Briala said that Celene had no real choice in the matter.

Isn't it implied Briala was mostly responsible for her successes in the first place?

She certainly played a big role in Celene's success. That's why I reconciled them in the game.

Who said anything about defeat? They can sign peace at any time. For exactly that reason - war is pointless. While attacking Ferelden, Free Marchers, Nevarra and so on - easy and possible.

What ? Does the other countries lack quills and ink? Why is a peace treaty impossible for them (even when its possible in the game) when its possible in your mind with Tevinter?

Really? Then why did Gaspard not do that? Why does he make peace with Ferelden and remains close friends with the Inquisitor.

The moment you stop thinking about what's best for the world and you start putting the Orlais-Ferelden thing as first priority, you become Loghain. Maybe it's better to keep politics in perspective, when you have an ancient magister threatning to swallow the world.

How exactly is putting a war monger on the throne what's best for the world? Getting a few extra soldiers now means nothing if that results in a huge Orlais verse Ferelden verse Tevinter war later that will without a shadow of a doubt be vastly more devastating than anything Corypheus will be able to throw at you by this point in the story.

I don't think that part of the story was particularly legit. The whole leadup to the decision was discussing what a war monger Gaspard was, including the fact that the he was planning on directly Celene and the palace that very night.

That is an excellent question. Why does he do that - abandon his stated foreign policy, one of the primary things differentiating him from Celene? His whole plan is to rally Orlais around another expansionist drive, dole out loot and plunder, and give the bloated military something to do. Making peace with Ferelden wipes that out entirely...so why should his supporters bother backing him any longer?

Which Celene knew about, and yet did nothing. She still held the peace talks knowing nothing would come from it and putting guards to stop Gaspard thus wasting everyones time and letting Briala cause far more damage.

Yet his supproters still back him, the fact is this, Gaspard is not so cut and dry as others make him be.

Yes, they apparently do. It's quite strange. One wonders when they'll eventually wise up to his act.

Because in case of Tevinter both countries will want the peace, while with every other (which Orlais is able to conquer) - Orlais would not need that peace and continue to swallow neighbors one by one. This was the openly declared plan. Hence placing expansionist on the throne in hope he would not attack you or you will be able to handle situation is a very unwise decision.

Gaspards ruling gives nothing to Orlais and endanger other countries still recovering from blight, mage-templar war and visit of Corifeus. It's nice that your diplomats able to talk some peace between Ferelden and Orlais, but you do not have to be Loghain to be skeptical for how long that will last for numerous reasons already mentioned.

But Gaspard isn't female OR an elf so he has to be evil.

Clearly the better option is to throw Celene and Briala back together because that relationship was hella healthy.

There's a war for the continued existence of the world going on, and your options for the Orlesian throne are an incompetent noble, an elven agitator, and a trained commander. I honestly don't know how anyone wouldn't choose Gaspard.

And he ends up firming up relations with Ferelden in order to shore up the defenses against Tevinter, so no harm done.

The cutthroat world of orlesian politics is simply not Cullen's thing and he's the first to admit it. It is no coincidence that every character with an insight into orlesian politics supports Celene or Briala.

The decision was easy for me. While Celene is not without flaws, she is still the best hope for Orlais (together with Briala). She's ruthless and scheming in getting what she wants, but at the same time she's progressive and has good goals for Orlais' people. Gaspard on the other hand doesn't care for the elves, all he wants is power and war. To me Gaspard would obviously be a tyrant and terrible for Orlais.

LOL. Dat logic.

Don't forgot to add the Mages as well. Anyone that isn't female or an elf or a mage has to be evil, according to some people's logic. :P

The way I see it, all three are terrible people; Celene's utterly ruthless in her pursuit of court favor, Gaspard is shamelessly power-hungry, and Briala cares nothing for the collateral damage of her little crusade. I side with the Grand Duke because he at least admits it; Celene acts high and mighty while burning Halamshiral, and Briala thinks of herself as a savior of the oppressed while spurring on a war that does nothing but hurt innocents. Gaspard's no better, but he doesn't pretend to be anything else. I respect that.

Gaspard gives stability and removes the game from Orlais, it gives the armies a strong leader instead of the bsmachines that are the players of the game. Orlais failed to hold Ferelden once why would they do better a second time?(And if Gaspard gives nothing to Orlais why would her armies be better and better funded?)  My point is its hard to take land and keep it if the people in it are unwilling no matter how awesome your army is and thats why I think that even if Orlais have a better army and so on they will never be able to keep Ferelden if her people is unwilling.
