What exactly do these do and how do they benefit your character?
What are titles, portraits and banners?

No benefit or anything. Just for looks.

They're like dress-up Barbie, no purpose except to custom you visible profile.
Note: you may run into certain types that will kick you if you don't have suitable window decoration, as these types classify ePeen by your unlocked dresses.

Lol, wow! There are actually people playing this game who will kick you out a lobby for not having the same make up on as them? People like that are the reason why the gaming community gets such a bad rep.

There is no way to judge the skill and/or experience of a random player in this game... except this. And while this is not a good metric, at all, it is all they have.

God that font is anoying and unncesary and..... as the above poster says, its the only way to judge how much a person has played the multi. Which is the best way to find people with decent enough items.
i often kick people on perilous who have no banner equiped because as it happens, 9 times out of 10 they dont have good enough items or skill for perilous. (from my personal experience so far)

Have people actually experienced being kicked because they haven't set a banner? That's crazy...
Anyway, you get them from completing challenges, and they exist to look pretty!

What I would like is a better way of setting them than searching every rank of every challenge to find them.

It says I have 1 portrait and one banner - I don't see how you set that, though.

Maybe it is a premature way to judge the skills of the player. But it's still not a good enough reason to boot someone from a lobby, especially if they meet the level requirements.
Perhaps some players don't even care about banners or don't even realize how to set them up since it's never explained in game how to do so. I've seen plenty of players with no banner equipped who have the necessary skills and items needed to complete perilous.

If a low level player joins the lobby with no banner I do tend to be tempted to kick them. Only because the chances are they have poor gear too, so would basically be a liability. I only really do that on perilous, though. Meh. Banners could be sort-of helpful, if more users knew where to locate them.

1. You're not krogan. Stop "shouting".
2. Considering the low costs required for some of the most basic banners (XP on a particular map), it's nearly impossible not to reach one by the time you've met the level requirements for Perilous. Unless you only play the one class while playing different maps every run, and even then you'll unlock that character's title.
3. Yeah, that button/key icon next to "Set Title/Portrait/Banner" under Challenges in Prestige is super confusing. People really ought to have that explained for them.

I thought 'shouting' online meant TYPING IN ALL CAPS LIKE THIS. As far as I know, I'm just typing in a different font. So you are a fontist. Plus, Wrex is my cousin. So yeah, I am a Krogan buddy.
